Seagull Gardening

Welcome to Seagull Gardening.

Join me on this exciting journey to reach self-sufficiency. I will be hopefully sharing some tips on the things I have learned over the years growing fruit and vegetables.
Along the way you will see some of my animal friends who are vital for this planet and our growing,
Whether you have a small, medium, or large size garden I encourage you to enjoy yourself and grow some fruit and vegetables which will benefit you and your family, your health, and wellbeing. We will also see the wonderful creation God has put before us.

So, let's enjoy the adventure together.

Hi Seagull! I'm looking to grow fuchsias for fruit, in England. Which varieties would you recommend, please? Also, where do you buy them from? I'm struggling to find procumbens etc. I think coccinea is the standard hedging fuchsia, though? So it should be easy, but I can't get any fruit off it. They drop before they're ripe. I'd value your thoughts. Thanks!

@@sarahvegangarden4822 Hi Thanks for your message. The varieties I grow are Fuchsia riccartonii, fully hardy. I tired Fuchsia procumbens and Fuchsia Bolivians however they have been hard to adapt to UK weather. I have read all fuchsia are edible and I do enjoy eating some of the berries that develop. I typed those varieties online and they were sent through the post as plug plants :). Always be careful you are not allergic thou. It's a super plant. I hope that helps?

@@seagullgardening Many thanks! I've ordered boliviana and procumbens from Lockyer Fuchsias, so we'll see how they do. I'm very confused by fuchsias - is riccartonii the standard hedging one with single petal red outside and purple inside? Coccinea, riccartonii and magellanica all look the same, as far as I can tell! Also, Roualeyn Fuchsia Nursery suggested hardy 'Display' has large berries so I might try them too and see if the flavour's nice. I love berries so I fancy being experimental with my fuchsias! Thanks again for replying! All the best wirh your channel! 👍😊

You have to be careful with shopping for these greenhouses... One i had for years and years (even sitting out in zone 5 winter weather) was fantastic until a large tree branch fell on it. The second (replacement) was really bad.. The connectors were isht plastic and couldn't hold the weight of anything so it near-immediately started warping, then eventually collapsing. Plus, the cover only lasted one season... the clear plastic flaked off everwhere into my yard like glitter until it was just that green grid full of holes and no protection from the elements. I don't know if companies even tell you what plastic they use or to know what recommend to look for, but will definitely look into it before ever buying again! My first one actually had an extra shelf space up on the top level. I would lift the greenhouse onto cinder blocks and then use 8 half sheet pans (from a bakery, closed down) to sit on the shelves and extend out a little more than the existing shelves. Miss that one : )

Pretty and architectural until it starts to produce sea monster sized powerful runners that spread at a huge rate. It will make 30 ft + canes when mature. Always restrain it within a strong and deep impermeable barrier or it will go everywhere. The knob head next to me planted it next to our boundary and it is trying to take over our garden too. Easily broke its way through a large and dense hedge, I have to apply weedkiller every year after the hedge has dropped its leaves to try and fight it back.
