Would you not just get down to the bottom of the bank and start, why start in open view high up? did I miss some of the video, but you never fished the start of the beat? and went straight for the honey hole, you seem to have left so much fishable water behind you.. I tend to fish every inch of water in front of me. Every cast with your nymphs seems to be 30-40ft and loading the rod, how about the water close in front of you? You fished half that beat in 4 minutes!!!!! BTW stocked rainbows?

Where I started the pool is wide and shallow, and I could see that there were only several smaller fish hanging around at the lower end. I don't worry about fish being able to see me too much in this river, as they don't get much pressure from other anglers. I just cast to the shaded areas on the far side that may hold a larger fish that I can't see. Seeing the small fish at the tail of the pool usually indicates that they have been pushed out of the head of the pool by the larger ones. The video doesn't really show how clear the water is, and I can quickly scan it and see any fish. I also have to cover a lot of ground in a days fishing on this river, and I know it intimately. I adapted my casting to the water in front of me at the time. A longer cast here allows more drift time to get the flies down to the depth the fish are at. I run 3X tippet to allow me to land the fish and release them quickly, but this slows down the sink rate. Hence, the longer casts. There are a couple of beats that require a slower, more methodical approach. On a slower day, I will fish these in a more traditional way with short close casts. If the fish are active, I switch into a more efficient mode and concentrate on the more likely to produce zones. These fish were introduced over a hundred years ago in this river and breed naturally. So it is self stocked. Some rivers closer to towns and cities do stock small lakes and sections of accessible rivers for kids' fishing days. Rivers like this one would only get restocked if an extreme flooding event occurred that required it. Thanks for taking the time to watch this video, comment, and ask good questions. I hope my response makes sense.

My opinion: Body camera is enough, talk to us, tell us exactly what setup you are using all of it, if dry fly fishing for instance tell us how you treat your line, leader tippet, etc. Just subbed. Best of luck.

Thanks for the feedback Martin, and for subscribing. I will take your comments on board. I plan to make some gear setup, flies used, and fishing tactics videos in the near future. After three years of fly fishing, I still classify myself as a beginner in this pastime. I am even more of a rookie video creator. Once again, I really appreciate your feedback.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been experimenting with an Insta360 X4 for third-person footage and then switching to the body mounted camera upon hook up. I like the results so far. I'm still figuring out the art of filmmaking, slowly.

That's such a beautiful river and such a wonderful job you did! Was curious to see the fly as you remove it from the fish's mouth but it's good anyway.

Thank you for watching and your kind comments. It is a very pretty river. I couldn't make out the exact fly after reviewing the footage, but I only use two different nymphs. So it will either be the one I tie in video number 4, or in video number 14 on this channel. Hope that helps.

Would have been nice to get the fish in the camera! Afraid it was too small!!!
@Euro_Nymphing_NZ26 күн бұрын
I usually hold the fish up in front of the chest camera briefly, but they are slippery and this one got away on me. It was an average size for this river, which is 2.5 to 3.5 pounds.

this video is cool because I can hear your heartbeat. Love it. your hookset was so slow that it looked intentional.. you didn't see the rise? like thought he went for a different bug?

I was casting to him and a Rainbow a bit further upstream alternately and changing flies for about two hours before he took that fly. I had definitely taken my "eye off the ball". I did see the take but had a heap of slack line to haul in before I could load the rod. Also, I wasn't 100% sure which white blob was actually the fly until he ate it. It's better to be lucky than smart 😁.

Very slow hook set with so much slack on the water, but you got him! Do you normally have so much line on the water?
@Euro_Nymphing_NZАй бұрын
Normally no, but this pool has a difficult current and I was getting a bit lazy with my line management .It worked out OK in the end, but I was lucky he hooked himself 😀.

Seeing invasive species thrive like that gives me mixed feelings. Rainbow trout are native to my area, and hardly ever look that healthy.
@Euro_Nymphing_NZАй бұрын
They don't seem to have impacted the native species much in this river, but no doubt they have in others. They have been here for over a hundred years so far. I see humans making a far bigger negative impact in most of our rivers. I'm no expert though, just my observations.
