The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is a congressionally chartered heritage organization originally founded in 1880 by the Grand Army of the Republic as the Sons of Veterans as a reserve officer corps. In 1954 the name was changed to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to more accurately identify the organization. It was then chartered under that name by act of the congress of the United States of America on August 20th, 1954. The military component of the SUVCW continues as the Sons of Veterans Reserve under the SUVCW parent organization. The SUVCW membership is open to anyone of direct or collateral descent of an honorably discharged Union soldier. Associate status exists for those with no lineage who are willing to abide by the rules of the Order. Learn more at www.suvcw.org.
