Project Hercules Chopper Build

Random vids on making a chopper! First the engine, made from a few bits left over from a Bristol Hercules aircraft engine.

Next up the gearbox, with no actual gears but two speeds. Intrigued? Best get watching then!

Plus a few bonus CNC conversion threads...

    I notice that the entire choke is open to the atmosphere on your dellorto . There's an air passage way (on the engine side of the slide ) that allows air into the motor even with the throttle slide closed , would make for poor starting and low speed running .

    Why don't you try to use a hall ignition sensor(three pins active sensor) for your ignition? You should get a good signal from zero rpm. I don't know if your ignition module will support such a sensor, but should be easy enought to find a module that works with a hall sensor instead of a variable reluctance sensor.

  • @StoneEng

    Thanks for the suggestion. I'll 'contact' (haha, see what I did there?) Boyer and do some more research.

    Back in the early 80s we were using Hall sensors to monitor the cranking speed of experimental engines, it does work well. They are a little fragile and this was our problem - fitters destroying expensive sensors, usually by pulling on the leads. However this is one case where old fashioned coil and interrupter ignition works even better. If the spark can be retarded to a little after TDC you can guarantee no kick back. And you can time it with an Avometer. Old fashioned coil ignition has problems with vibration and high rpm but I doubt this engine is going much over a couple of thousand rpm.

  • @Bata.andrei
    @Bata.andreiКүн бұрын

    @@Turnipstalk I am an automotive sparky. Nowadays, hall sensors are quite sturdy and inexpensive. While a coil and interruptor has the advantage of being very simple, a good electronic ignition module coupled with a hall sensor, can be very easy to adjust/ tune and can also be very reliable. Also the spark can be triggered with a simple micro switch connected on the signal output pin of the hall sensor. This can be used for starting the engine by rotating it after TDC, squirting some fuel into the cylinder and triggering the spark.

    Wouldn't a strobe timing light show you when the spark was happening? Film the process and view in slow motion mode?

  • @StoneEng
    @StoneEngКүн бұрын

    Yes, we've had the strobe out and while it's a good indicator, not 100% reliable. We also tried slow motion filming the plug itself. Probably needs a few people around to co-ordinate, which I haven't had due a while.

  • @pjjms

    Wonder if it would start by being fired off with a shot of fuel and a spark like modern cars with auto stop/start do? Mind you a cartridge start (field Marshal) would be cool too.

  • @StoneEng
    @StoneEngКүн бұрын

    Both good options. We can certainly get fuel in via the decompressor. I'll see if the ignition can be set to manually fire the coils.. Would be a cool start button. 😊 Cartridge start also being considered, but a few problems associated with that.

    Perhaps this might be helpful with the starter: Lanz tractors featured 1- cylinder engines of up to a good 10 l of displacement and hence proved to be a challenge for starters. I believe the company first used regular starters on 24 V and then switched to a version which was less of a challenge re electricity and weight: a „pendulum“ type starter which would rock the crankshaft back and forth until it was able to overcome the top dead center. It was controlled by a set of solenoids…nothing fancy. FYI here is a link - maybe it helps. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nXakk9x7nKirebQ.htmlsi=VsCNUv-3ngkt26fG

    A large version of the very simple kickstart used on the original American Cushman engines would be easy to fab given your high skill level and if desired could include an anti-kickback stop with a slipper clutch mounted to the crankshaft so starting is a safe proposition. If you prefer it be out of the way a jack shaft could put the pedal on the high side of the bike when parked.
