Hi Tommy- I m a turning addict as well. My thing is Turning live edge Burls. I also prefer to turn green wood. My method is simple and fast. I 1st turn my bolws to 10% thickness (usually 3/4-1" thick) and record the weight. I put it in the convection oven at 180 for 2-3 hours at a time. I open the door for a few seconds (especially in the beginning) to let the humidity escape every 15 minutes or so. My bowls or vases take a couple of days of about 6- 7 sessions. then I let it sit for a couple days. I know its done when the weight loss is minimal.

also-Ive found the cracks and warps will be the same no matter which way you dry so you might as well speed it up this way and get it done.

Well Tommy, despite the roll tide stuff, the finished project turned out beautiful. I love the grain in old Southern heart pine, and even old well dried wood like what you were turning probably still gave off the wonderful pine smell. Thanks for showing the making of a beautiful memorial piece for the church. Cheers, Tom

Tommy, I’m sorry to say I was enjoying the video and looking for some useful segmenting tips, however at about the 6:00 point it all went North! I saw the partiality hidden elephant behind the drill press and the you put up that “roll tide!” stuff on the screen. So sorry you couldn’t align with a good University like Auburn, with our two mascots The Tiger and War Eagle. 👍😁 (BSEE 1972, you know the year Auburn blocked two Bama punts and scored two touchdowns on the to win the game.)

I haven't made a rolling pin yet but it strikes me odd that it wouldn't be made flat in the "working" section, the middle 10" or so. If not, it seems like it would be thinning the dough unevenly?

I control the humidity in my shop year-round, humidifier in the winter, dehumidifier in the other seasons as needed, keeping the humidity between 40 and 50%. I turn green bowls to final shape, sanded to 1200 grit, pack them in their shavings in a sealed plastic bag and take them out 10 minutes every night. I weigh them, once they stop changing they are done. Never had one crack ! Hope that helps someone

I control the humidity in my shop year-round, at 40-50%, running a humidifier in winter and a dehumidifier in summer I only turn green bowls, I collect the shavings as they come off the bowl, and I turn the bowl all the way to its final shape, sanding to 1200 grit. Sometimes I burnish the wood and don’t put a seal on it, sometimes walnut or almond oil - then I put it in a sealed plastic bag in its shavings, and take it out for 10 minutes every evening. I do weigh the bowls, when they stop changing they are done. I’ve never had a bowl crack and it’s a very easy process. Burl is great because there is no direction to the grain, I’m never worried about those bowls distorting Hope that helps someone!
