1:07 Hey, m46od! 1:15 The "b" family could refer to every engine they made since 1944 (B4B) to the 2010's (B63XX engines). Soltierally every gas engine they ever made. The b19, b21, b23, b200 and b230 were all very similar to one another, and i guess you could call them the "redblock" family, or just Volvo SOHC 8v family. Then there was also the 4valve b204 & b234, tho these werejust b200 and b230 engines with another head. 2:13 there were dohc versions! 2:46 This is an issue with all old engines. Ignition parts, rotors & caps wears out. 3:10 B230s can safely do 200-250hp, if set up right. At 300hp you're pushing it. The turbo var. of these engines only did 170-180hp or so from factory! 3:57 Got a 1987 740 gle (early model, so 1986 body) and wires are holding up good. Might depend on where you live, of course. Not an issue with the engine itself tho. 4:44 Depends on which year of b230f, the ones with lh2.2 had a sensor in the distributor instead. 4.54 Another common issue with the b230E is the car could be blowing a 25A fuse (no. 12 or 13, dont remember),in that case your fuel relay could be defective (happend to me and i had to tow my car) It is a green relay sitting behind the fuses in the same plastic box. 6:28 Woah! That there is a late 144 (1972?). Which means its probably rocking a b20! wrong clip:( Still sounds great
I have a 2000 Nissan frontier I would like to know if I could use the iron block off of a Altima around the same year and if the cylinder heads are compatible as well please help me I've been searching for a frontier engine and all I can find right now is Altima engine

In the S15 SR20 they updated the oil pickup. It has a slotted oil pick up so if the sump gets damaged your engine wont get starved of oil.
Thanks for the insight!
4:57 "not a single pantie dry" for anybody wondering what it says on the rear window
😂😂
What ITB Setup is this? Kit or custom?
Twin fajs carbs and stacks I 3D printed
As someone new to the s chassis and sr20 I appreciate the research and insight
Hey much appreciated!
Wifes had her 200sx for nearly 20 years now. Tuned to a reliable 245rwkw. I would add an oil cooler, delete the shitty CAS and replace with a trigger kit, convert to Audi coil packs, replace the junk old loom. Lots of people mistake the Temp sensors for causing their hard hot starts, however it is more often caused by a failing CAS. This only becomes apparent when tuning and seeing live data like on a dyno. The aging loom can also cause the temp sensor not to read or spike on occasion.
That’s what I found about these engines. They are old, used to be cheap and everyone trashed them. But with a little of maintenance and perseverance they can be reliable and rewarding :)
@@marcinjedrol I was probably one of those that advised some people to "upgrade" to an SR20 from their CA18 20 years back. All my 180sx's were SR powered and I never gave the CA a chance. I never bothered to learn more about the CA until I started working on the now wifes car. Variety in performance part brands is an issue compared to the SR though.
@@Driftit If you think about it, CA in its bare idea should be better than SR, since it's an iron block, has strong crank stock, also comes with crank girdle, direct acting cams, all things a guy needs to do some real fast stuff. But as you said, people neglect them and it results in poor opinions
What is your opinion on B234 or B204 16 valve heads? They seem to give quite alot more power to the redblock we all know and love
It’s a good addition to the motor in my opinion. Especially when you wanna go turbo, it allows the engine to breathe better
Nice for power, not as good for reliability
Do NOT went your PCV box to atmosphere. The Bosch LH2.4 ECU in these cars can seriously freak out when detects unaccounted for air volume. Other than that it's a great vid! 👍
Thanks for the pointer! I had it vented out since it was twin carb :)
you should look up JB-Engine. That dude is a redblock mastermind.
Will do! Thanks!
great video!
Thank you!
Built one for my RS13 back in the day 2005 ish. GT2871R with tubular manifold. CA18DE cams adjusted, steel rods and fully balanced bottom end. 300zx maf and 660cc injector AMW fmic etc. Made humble 408hp with 482Nm with 1.6bar and it's still alive with over 40k of occasional trashing. It really likes that you let them oils get to a temp before loading, and also very regular oil changes. Good engine, but you need to know what you are doing when building one. Not much room for bodge jobs.
😴 *PromoSM*
can the ones in the fwd me converted to rwde?
Depends. If the bellhousing matches then ye. But fwd engines have differently located stuff
Great Video! I wish to see more!!
Thank you so much!
6-7K euro for a 350Z? Cheapest in the whole of europe on autoscout is almost 13K

to let people know I have a sr20det s13 blacktop bought from a japan jdm importer in canada 15 years ago , swapped to a convertible , it was certified to have 54000km then ( installed new timing chain , water pump , seals , head gasket etc and oil pump ) , only mods are a fuel pump , 300zx brakes , header , 2.5" exhaust ( no scream pipe ) , aluminum driveshaft and mass airflow . everything else is original : coils , injectors , computer , igniter etc. it sat still (only 3000km ) for the first ten years . since I moved to the backcountry in 2021 I use this car to go to the big city every 2-3 weeks ( bought winter tires and even used it last winter a couple times ) and it is a 1500km going and coming ride in the mountains with very steep hills to climb. that engine is happy only when it revs i can go uphill in 3rd and 4th speeds at 5000rpm minimum like a rocket , for the flat section of the ride wich is on highway i hold it at 4000rpm at least in 5th speed . i change my oil every 5000km 3000miles with cheap wal-mart supertech 1/3 5w40 or 5w30 synthetic , 2/3 mineral 10w40 or 20w50 is the best mix for this engine . it even ran on 100% pure delvac mineral 15w50 diesel oil more than once since it was given to me I could not waste it but I do not recommend it : the good smell of gasoline will disappear because of that much more smelly diesel oil , I still have a bottom left in the 5 gallons jug... I mix the oils according to the season and on hand availability . I ve done 78000Km so far since installed , never experienced any glitch or flaw with that engine
SRs are great motors with very little weak spots, so I agree here. I also have ran 10w50 Rotella diesel oil in my rally volvo engine, it’s good for the old style tappets, so you running that in SR is understandable. I haven’t heard too many complaints about srs, so good choice mate!
@@marcinjedrol I raced the canadian association of rally sports championship from 2001 to 2009 in subarus , I remember in the beginning there were still 2 old guys from ontario racing in a 240/244 squared sedan
great vid, thanks man

Thank you <3
The last one isnt really a red block its a custom block one off cnc custom head i have no idea what internal are but it more based of a b230 but definitely not one
Isn’t it the redblock but filled with concrete? Thats how you reinforce blocks for insane powers
@@marcinjedrol no it's cast with no water jacket made for drag racing only it has no cooling system but very thick strong cylinder walls
