I think these live performances are better than Freddie Mercury's live aid. Imagine if Sam Cooke lived to perform at live aid.
@mateuszmattias2 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought, he would have been 54 by then, quite possibly (if he'd kept in shape and stayed away from drugs and booze) he would still have had that great voice at that age. We'll obviously never know, but it's quite an intriguing what-if.
@buckets45272 жыл бұрын
@@mateuszmattias But what intrigues me the most is why his live performances weren't available for the public to view. Given the fact that in the early 60's there were already live coverage of bands and performers.
@mateuszmattias2 жыл бұрын
@@buckets4527 Ok, I continue to speculate of course, but although there are live recordings from that era it wasn't easy to get good live sound with the equipment that was avaliable. Doing a really good live recording was expensive, you would pretty much have to have microphones to all instruments, and have them balanced for guitar, percussion, horn sections etc. At the same time you would want to keep noise from the crowd down. Most of the time there was no way of mixing the recordings afterwards so you would simply have to get it right straight away. And no second takes on live recordings. Of course there are examples, I have a gporgeous live clip with Jazz flute player Herbie Mann at the Village Gate in 1961 that has crystal clear sound, but still that wasn't at all easy to accomplish back in the day.
@buckets45272 жыл бұрын
@@mateuszmattias My guess is because he is a black and activist, and as we know discrimination is rampant back then than it is now. However, it is not the color of his skin that prevented his live performances from being covered or published (if that's the right term), I think it's because of the word activism, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, Nat King Cole, Otis Redding and other black performers to name a few all have live performances for the public to view. And, I think he could afford such, if ever nobody wants to cover it. Just some things to ponder upon.
