    Yes, that's pretty much how we did it since we don't camp, but stay in hotels or B&B's. There seemed to be good access to both along the trail.

    Great video! Thanks for sharing your adventure. I especially liked the fact that you didn't drown everything with dopey music. That drives me crazy, and it's all over KZread, even when natural sounds are a big part of what's being shown. This was fun to watch. The natural sound made it easier to feel like I was riding with you.

    Thanks for posting. I’m planning a driftless area cycling holiday for next year, but these WI rail trails look interesting, too. Would try to avoid paved trails. Is there a good (electronic) map of all WI rail trails and the surface material? Hoping to take Amtrak from CT to Chicago an then take as many rail trails as possible to Lacrosse where my driftless adventure will start.

    Thanks for watching. The Driftless trip sound like a challenging, but beautiful ride. Amtrak does go to downtown Milwaukee from Chicago. From Milwaukee, you can ride the 225 miles or so to LaCrosse on around 185 mile of Rail Trails and (bike paths in Milwaukee and Madison area). I have ridden every trail on that route, and done multi-day trips along the route. The only tricky part is around 40 miles of road riding from Madison to Reedsburg. I do not know of an electronic version of the trails, but the Wisconsin DNR Site has maps and information on all of the trails. The trails you would be interested in would be: Glacial Drumlin Trail from Milwaukee area to Madison Area, 400 Trail, Elroy-Sparta Trail, and LaCrosse River Trail. The last three trails are connecting trails to get you from Reedsburg to LaCrosse. You could continue along the Great River Trail to Winona, MN as well. If you need any help with your planning I would be glad to help. Email: [email protected] Another KZread site to check out is Paul Suchecki. He lives in Illinois and has several videos about some rides in Wisconsin. Also check out my Elroy-Sparta Tunnelpalooza Video for an overview of the Elroy-Sparta Trail. I live in the Madison Area so let me know when you are riding through and maybe I can ride along for a bit.

    @@lammetrackproductions3962 thank you for the generous reply. I’ll dive into those references and send you an email after I’ve done a bit more research. Also, I just saw a KZread video about gravel cycling routes around Galena, IL. I’m thinking of including it as another home base to ride loops from in the driftless. If I can find a third base in NE IA, that might be perfect. Anyway, thanks again, and look out for an email from me.

    Thanks for watching. Plenty of great trails in Wisconsin. Can ride from Sheboygan to Milwaukee 95% on trails. Can ride from Milwaukee to LaCrosse and on to Winona, MN on trails (there is a 4 mile gap east of Madison, and about a 30 mile gap between Madison and Reedsburg, need to take roads) Madison is a great hub for three great rail trails, Military Ridge, Badger, and Glacial Drumlin. Plus trails in Madison are great! We will be doing an out and back on the full GAP Trail in mid-October. Hope to post the video a few weeks after.

    A very nice trip video. I was at the opening of a very short KATY trail. There were only a few miles around Jefferson City on the Dedication day in 1990. I still have the Grand Opening T-Shirt they gave out. I have only done the trail from Pilot Grove to Herman, but many trips between Pilot Grove and Hartsburg. We were camping and there were only a few places to camp along the trail. A good base camp for shorter trips is the KATY Roundhouse in New Franklin, MO. I have had to stop long distance riding due to cancer. So these video bring back many memories. This is one of the best videos I have watched on the complete trail. Now you can ride from Kansas City to Machens using the Rock Island Trail. What camera mount did you use on the trip. I can't seem to find a good one that doesn't vibrate or wobble.

    Thanks for the kind comments. Glad you enjoyed our video. I currently use a standard type handlebar GoPro mount that I kind of piece together. I do try to raise it up and forward as to not include my front bag in every shot. Still working on a mount that I'm totally comfortable with. The biggest and best change that I made was upgrading from a GoPro 3 (used in my first two bike trip videos) to a Go Pro 8 with video stabilization capability (used in the KATY video). This really ended any major shaking and bumping on the videos. Still working on my camera work.

    How did you get from the bridge over the Missouri to the motel in Jefferson City?

  • @lammetrackproductions3962
    @lammetrackproductions3962 Жыл бұрын

    We came off the bridge and used city streets to get to the hotel. They were not too busy and were very wide. As I recall I think we took Clay street to High Street to get us close. It was also pretty much down hill to the Capitol Plaza. A bit tougher on the way back since se did have to go back up the hill to get back on the bridge. Hope this helps.

    Curious as to what gear you were using during the majority of your ride. Front chain ring and rear derailleur?

  • @lammetrackproductions3962
    @lammetrackproductions3962 Жыл бұрын

    Hey Tom, While touring fully packed down, we usually push a fairly easy gear and try to keep up a faster cadence. So on my Trek 520 I use my middle chain ring on the front most of the time and ride on the middle of my rear gears and adjust accordingly. Not sure of the exact gear ratio. So on a rail trail with only slight elevation changes, we can usually ride around 12 mph, going a bit slower on the uphill grades, and faster on the down grades. Hope you found our video helpful.

  • @tomdonovan2832
    @tomdonovan2832 Жыл бұрын

    @@lammetrackproductions3962 Thanks, that is helpful. Both myself and my wife tend to ride in harder gears most of the time when we are out on paved bike trail (largest front chain ring and two smallest rear gears) but I think we would both benefit from an easier approach when on gravel or going much longer distances.

    Just finished reading your blog, very good and full of important details. The only thing I was surprised at was the amount of weight you carried. I ride a touring bike with 700x40 semi-aggressive tires with 50-60psi which have worked great over the years. But I only carry about 30lbs of gear for self-contained touring which includes 3 days of food, 2 large water bottles, all my camping gear (i only stay indoors when necessary), all my bike maintenance items and my electronics. I also use 4 panniers with the weight split 60/40 for better handling. You should go through all your gear and separate what you used/didn't use and toss out the extra. Just make sure you keep emergency stuff. Personally I think you carried way to much clothing, but I'm also a bit of an ultralight. It's not necessary to change clothes everyday especially if staying in motels where you can hand wash them daily. Now it's time to watch the video, Loved the video and picked up a few trail riding tips, thanks.
