Hey Doug, how hard is it to get planing with the SUP?
@rochesterwindsports Жыл бұрын
Hello Dave. I have not actually tried it myself. I believe that the wind sup category has mostly centralized on sub planing fun. A few of the boards do have center boards to help with staying up wind and returning home. Additionally, they now make add on side fins that can be put on and off with webbing straps to do the same as a center board. If you were interested in a board that would be long and good for planing windsurfing I would look to the Kona One windsurfing class. You could still paddle it. Otherwise, Starboard and Exocet among others do offer windsup boards.

Nicely done video. Width of the board is really important too in addition to the volume. Beginner boards (> 85 cm wide) Intermediate boards (70 - 85 cm wide) Advanced boards (<70 cm wide)

Thanks for the comment. I'd generally agree with the importance of width to aiding a beginner, or at the transition to each category of board you listed. Wider windsurfing boards allow a stable deck for beginners to learn skills, stability in free ride conditions and forgiveness in turns.....BUT in sub planing/nearly planing conditions it is my opinion that the glide a longer narrower board allows for a sense of speed actually hinders progress. I come from a time of learning on tippy boards with centerboards....I got really good at falling in and up hauling. But once I had those skills, and the transition from up haul to boom, the longer and narrower board allowed me to slice through the water and give a sensation of speed. When my young son was learning to windsurf he learned the skills on a fairly modern wide beginner board, but it quickly held him back as the surface tension of the wide board didn't allow him to maximize the wind speed and turn it into board speed. I hope you are progressing and still loving windsurfing. I like your page.

Nice drone footage! Interesting year sailing at the pond, while everyone was preoccupied with flooding from Lake Ontario we had some great sailing on the pond. Local boating came to a near standstill due to wake restrictions. Not us! What will this year bring? Snow in April?

Hi Alexander. Stop over to www.rochesterwindsports.com for a few other Kitewing vids, and be sure to contact me via the contact form there. I'll put you on my list of people who want to give it a shot next year. Skates, or skis, wing riding is incredible.

A Kitewing video that's not from Sweden or New Hampshire! Who knew! This one from the north end of beautiful Canandaigua Lake where for most of us it all began. Believe it or not this ice was very thick and so clear you can easily see the bottom of the lake in many shots. Doug's drone footage is awesome and just memorizing to watch and listen to. A big thanks to Doug for letting me ride as I'd come without my wing and being the true ambassador of this sport said "Just take mine out!" If you look carefull you'll see my DN and a Skeeter in the background. What's next windsurf hydrofoiling?

Real nice! We don't get ice like this too often so all the toys come out when its good. Still can't believe some of the shots you got. Thanks so much for putting this together, now my wife will know why I rush out in the middle of winter with my gear!

Nice explanation, well done. Just started last summer, and find the sport in a class by itself. Difficult at first ,to say the least but so worth it with every little step achieved.

This was such an awesome day. This great vid makes me feel like I'm right back on the board and reliving each and every crash! BTW I remember that blown gybe, my sinuses inflated like a balloon from that face plant! Nice job Doug.
