GIANT GEMS CATTERY

GIANT GEMS CATTERY

We are a Maine Coon breeder in west central Michigan, USA. Our lines have a strong European/Russian/Ukraine influence (large feet, bushy cheeks and manes) with the large round eyes. The Maine Coon cat is one of (if not the) largest domestic breed of cat in the US. Our cats are a little above average in weight and length (14-18 lbs females/19-24 lbs males), but we don't breed for the monster Maine Coons, because like many large breeds they are very susceptible to (DM) Hip Dysplasia. Our cats are DNA tested for HCM/PKD/SMA with N/N on each. We work very hard to assure that our line (each of our gentle giants) are healthy and happy.

This channel provides advice for first time cat owners, facts about (maine coon) cats you didn't know, cat videos that will make you laugh and even show you what its like living with maine coon cats. Be sure to subscribe!

    A new cat does not need to be a cute, fluffy kitten. There are also older cats needing a new home. Don’t forget insurance vet's bills can be frightening.

    I love this. I am trying to figure out how to utilize some of your concepts into a rental property (drilling as few holes as possible). I have some beautiful old cedar boards. But the apartment does not have that built in ledge as your home does. I would be building a long upper shelf up top with an on ramp.

  • @giantgemscattery
    @giantgemscatteryАй бұрын

    I am glad you liked it. Thanks for watching. Even though you don't have a top ledge, I would make one by combining 2 - 1" x 10" wide boards (side by side), either 6' or 8' long (which ever you have room for) carpeted as a destination point for the cats. Support the 20" wide ledge with self support brackets (4 will be required). They can be purchased at Menards back in the DIY self storage area. Cats love high places. But understand the higher you go, the wider the ledge will need to be for the safety of the cat. I have a second DIY video for a cheap and easy high point for the cats...it's called "Cheap and Easy (DIY) Cat Bed for Adventurous Cats" Enjoy!

    My maine coon was the best friend I have ever had. He was rescued, but a pure bed cat. Unfortunately, he died suddenly of illness at age 8. I was devastated. The vet told me this was common of pure bred cats. I believe in rescuing animals where I can, but after knowing this Maine coon, I think about getting another all the time. I live in Southern United States, and I worry of finding a good breeder.

    Even though we provided our cats the best food, we still weren't completely satisfied with their health. After doing a lot of research, we discovered this solution. Once we switched their bowls and set up a rotation plan every three days, we saw their health improve almost right away, especially noticing their coats getting shinier and healthier. Thank you for watching and caring about our furry friends!

  • @edschulhof6303
    @edschulhof63032 ай бұрын

    Happy Caturday! Interesting video. You seem to care about cats. Use a flatter dish to avoid whisker fatigue while the cat eats. Leaving dry food out all the time leads to obesity. Cats get most of their daily moisture requirement from their food. Dry food leads to all kinds of health issues. The solution is to feed fresh, homemade food. 80% should be animal muscle meat that is high in taurine. At the least, a wet cat food that is low in calcium and phosphorus.

  • @giantgemscattery
    @giantgemscattery2 ай бұрын

    Homemade food is risky too. It comes down to how attentive we are at feeding time. We would never feed your child and walk away leaving the food out to spoil. No! We feed, clean up, and go about our day. We should have the same mindset with a furry family members. E.Coli, Salmonella, and other forms of bacteria are the number 1 cause of gut/gi/stomach issues in cats. When you fix that, your cat will love you for it. Thank you for watching.

    @@giantgemscattery Happy Feline Friday! Thank you for your reply. I feed my cats on Corelle salad plates. Homemade food does take time and effort. I only switched when commercial food made both of my cats sick. That was a year ago. I have found one wet cat food that they like and is low in calcium and phosphorus. People need to feed what they are comfortable with. If it is dry food, find a good quality food, low in Ca and P. Salmonella, etc. are just as likely in commercial pet food. I eat the same ground beef and chicken thighs as my cats. If one of us gets sick, we all do.

    I’ve never seen this ‘drool’ in my cat’s feed dish. The dish is always empty when I refill it.

  • @giantgemscattery
    @giantgemscattery2 ай бұрын

    All cats drool when eating...some a little, some a lot. But either way, even if the bowl is empty the bowl will harbor bacteria. The only way to guarantee the bowl is sterile and food is fresh is to change out every 3-4 days. Once we changed to stainless steel bowls with a 3 day rotation our cat's gut issues went away. Thank you for watching and the feedback.

    what clippers work for a cat with mats?

  • @giantgemscattery
    @giantgemscattery3 ай бұрын

    Thanks for your question! When it comes to cats with mats, it's important to be gentle and patient. We use these combs which are successful for most of the mats. In Maine Coons this is especially an issue behind their ears and under the (arm pit -- so-to-speak) of their front legs. We use 3 different kinds of comb. The "Pecute Pet Dematting Tool 2 Pack" and "Dog Cat Grooming Comb with Wooden Handle." Amazon Links: amzn.to/42FYuIk amzn.to/49htzV8 But also understand sometimes even your best efforts in combing will still fail requiring the use of electric clippers to clip the base of the matted hair for removal. We use these clippers because they are not only affective but very quiet. Brand by Highdas: "Dog Grooming Kit Clippers". Amazon Link: amzn.to/3UKlBPZ

I use baking soda to wash container , and then store it up dry abd ventilate .

    I totally agree. Many cats are suffering with some commercially sold litter boxes. I made my cat suffer for a long time. My vet told me that cats like litter boxes that are sturdy when they are doing No. 2. I was also told that cats will stay inside the litter box longer when they like it. I am a DIYer so I made my cat's litter box with scrap wood and made it very sturdy. When I placed my cat into the litter box, it only took 15 seconds for my cat to start peeing. He loves it so much he never went inside his old plastic litter box again.

  • @giantgemscattery

    It is such a relief when you finally dial in on your kitty stressors. Cats have to make so many adjustments in their lives to accommodate their human family members. We should work just as hard to make sure we are not imposing stressors on them in their daily routines. It's a subtle thing...none of us do it deliberately to our furry friends, but weird behaviors should be the first indication something out of balance. The litter box is a huge problem area with many cats. Thank you for watching!

    Stay tuned to the channel for an upcoming video where I rebuild (what we call) the Mega Box. There is nothing sold on the open market (Litter Box wise) that is as big, more sturdy, easier to clean and a total favorite of all the cats in the house. I am waiting for a break in the Michigan winter weather to finish shooting the video. It is super easy to build, inexpensive ($25) and only takes a few hours (once you have located the materials) to complete. We really appreciate you watching.

    This was a great idea. I’ve been wanting to do this myself here in this little house and we’ve made the entire garage (in the process) their whole pad. I rescue cats and it’s getting tight here in the winter months when they want to come in 23 hrs a day.😂. But this is an amazing thing you got going on. It’s amazing how we animal lovers open our hearts and houses 🙄 to our fur friends at any length to make them happy. It made me chuckle when you were almost at the end and saying you were gonna watch and see where else these roads in the sky will go next and as you showing us what you’ve put up so far . It was so cute for you saying that the way you did. I subscribed but you don’t have to say my name. I want to THANK YOU for putting this teaching video up. It helps people like me who try to build these things by myself. The measurements and climbing is the hardest part for me I’d think. I’ll be watching more of your videos for sure.
