I still prefer the original, I think it’s more a groundbreaking action film, a brilliant use of low budget and new talent and the Australian landscape to create a unique apocalypse. Road warrior is a little more generic, Thunderdome gets a little bit weirder, and then Fury Road capitalizes on everything set up by the Road Warrior to actually work. I think it boils down to the fact that I never really liked the side characters in the Road Warrior.

They're literally quoting iMDB reviews and making fun of the people who said it was bad. They actively say multiple times that they themselves loved it. Also, this isn't meant to be a KZread video first. It's a podcast, and they're presumably uploading to KZread for the people who prefer it over Spotify or Apple.

About the "deckard-rachel love scene"...it doesn't need to be in the movie at all, or at least as long as it was. They could've had them give each other a look, or had Rachel be the one to initiate because of her confusion, or something else. But one way to look at his behavior during the scene is the "Deckard is a Replicant" theory, if it was true then he also has emotional stunting brought on by being a young emotionally immature replicant with no implanted memories about having sex. Remember when Pris and Roy kissed? It looked childish and awkward. If Deckard is a replicant then it would make sense he'd approach this sort of thing awkwardly. Even with that though, it's a weird and rapey scene and should've been cut. Apparently it was a producer at the studio who "required" a sex scene to be in the movie.

The term "overrated" is used wrong all the time. People don't define "who" is overrating it, they don't define what is a proper rating, and the context around the "rating" for which it exceeds.

I feel like the key to adapting an anime into live action is to make it feel real and practical, but also keeping true to the source material. It's one thing to see an animated character act like an idiot for the sake of comedy (not an insult, just an observation), but seeing someone act like that in real life would just be unsettling. Another thing is the story pacing: there are no filler arcs or stretched out moments, so it feels like a natural progression instead of people glaring at each other for ten episodes straight interlaced with flashbacks and inner thoughts. In short, a live action anime adaptation needs to be real enough.

I've noticed just among English people, any who grew up around crime really like this film Heat. They relish the detail, the realism, the adrenaline and the romance of seeing the last era of bank robbers brought to life. A lot of their dads or uncles were in that profession - less Neil McCauley than Big Vern with a sawn-off, to be fair, but still, it's a nostalgic film for them..Nice discussion, cheers.

Fun discussion to a movie I hate, LOL! I think I was the wrong age when Temple of Doom was released -- at the halfway point in high school -- so I only saw IJ&TTOD as just another lousy sequel that cynically tries to squeeze money out of audiences who loved the original. A liberal youngster raised in the era of "All In the Family," Kurt Vonnegut novels, and Alex Haley's "Roots," I thought the film was both misogynistic and racist (not just in its depiction of the Thugees, but with the character of "Short Round," too). Some of the action scenes struck me as ludicrous (which I could forgive), but the gross-out moments, in particular, seemed contrived and excessive -- or just vile. I tried to watch the film again several years ago, but I just couldn't get into it and switched it off. That said, a fun discussion is a fun discussion, and I'm glad you don't just gloss over the film's flaws. The Last Crusade revived the franchise, deservedly so, but IMO the franchise only delivered twice for audiences: a great film in "Raiders" and a pretty good film in "Last Crusade." The rest I can live without... but we all go on our own respective journeys, and nostalgia certainly can play a part!

I think that in considering the budget for the following seasons it's important to know that they sunk so much of their budget this season into their infrastructure. They did thousands upon thousands upon thousands of hours of casting work, and from my understanding they know who's being cast for the next few seasons at least ... Or at least they were able to tease a hell of a number of potential characters during the execution. They built so many props and locations they'll be able to reuse for next season (Loguetown looks set and ready for them to start filming from what it looks like in Roger's execution sequence.) and I suspect they will get to reuse some material that had to be stripped from season 1. I'm excited for whenever we get to experience this delightful world again. This was a delightful review of the series.

Glad you enjoyed the review and yeah we are all really excited to see where the next seasons go. As we get into the Grandline I know they will have to make some concessions for how to adapt certain characters but it will be interesting to see how they approach some of those production issues transferring it to live action

Of the things discussed in regards to changes in regards to the source material, I think it is unfortunate they didn't briefly touch on the way Usopp didn't get his moment to shine. They did touch on Nami's personality changing, but not that her story arc was changed and how it softened the impact of her self-destructive episode. The villagers of Coco Village originally play a far larger role, trying to be standoffish to her because they want to give her the freedom to give up on the childish quest she embarked upon and just run away from Arlong to pursue her own happiness. The sister is actually the one person who supports her most, and takes a bullet to protect Nami during the theft of the accumulated loot. In regards to Garp & the dog hat, the hat primarily served as a means to keep his identity hidden from the reader, because Oda had shown the character before in an earlier iteration of One Piece that got published a year or so before the modern-day behemoth saw its first chapter. After the reveal, he wore it less or not at all. I think it is unfortunate you didn't bring up the in-joke regarding calling out attack names, or that Zoro is against it. Why is he against it? Because he can't do that shit while holding a weapon in his mouth in a live action setting. Manga/anime Zoro is just as bad at it as the rest of them! In regards to the foreshadowed antagonist for the next season, I think it would have been useful to just point out that that guy is meant to be the first one to truly chase after Luffy & co. With Garp having been inserted earlier into the story (with his insanely high rank of Vice-Admiral!) the live action is going to have to do a great job to make this new enemy with a far lower rank still feel like the huge threat he is given the general theme that ranks and bounties equate to threat levels. (They'll pull it off, I'm sure.. but it will still hit different.) Finally, on the topic of Luffy being an inconsiderate idiot in the anime compared to the more likable and empathic one in the live action.. Luffy has a very primal personality. He's not good at listening to complicated stories, strategizing or all that stuff. He is good at reading people. He knows Nami is not bad, just like how he knew Zoro wasn't bad, either. He doesn't need to hear her backstory, or why she did what she did, because he'll accept her as his friend regardless and be there to do for her what she cannot do on her own. In his eyes, if she ends up betraying him, that is on him for being a bad judge of character. His ability to trust and understand a person without needing to have things spelled out is his strength... until it blows up in his face, if it ever does, anyway. (Gotta keep that comment ambiguous / spoiler-free..!) Thanks for the fun podcast review! Edit: Almost forgot.. Cowboy Bebop as a show was shunned by its original creator to the point that they didn't even bother watching the entirety of the first episode. He knew they got it totally wrong, especially after his opinions didn't hold much weight during the production and he was sidelined. Eiichiro Oda was a genius for having a very strict 'you are not getting the license unless I have the full sign-off on the end product' clause as part of his contract... unfortunately, the creator of Bebop didn't actually own the rights himself, so it was trivially easy to sideline him.

One thing about the editing is Matt Owens didn't get to finish editing. Once the strike started it was left to the studio to finish. They also planned for 10 episodes but the approaching budget wall and strike pushed it down to 8. For sure there was going to be at least 1 more episode of Cocoyashi Village and Arlong Park where Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp were going to have their respective 1 on 1s, which would have included Hachi as well as Usopp getting his entire moment from the Manga. Genzo and Nojiko were also going to get more screen time and lines to build up Nami's scene, but they had to cut it and smush it together. I'm basing this on Matt Owens comments during his most recent appearance on Hasan Pikers stream. Matt Owens also mentions they have a plan to introduce Hachi if they can get all the way to Sabaody. With Basically stating Hachi had decided to leave Arlongs crew early because he couldn't take his cruelty towards humans.

1:06:35 The "older" actors did this show so much justice. The took it seriously, acted it as if it all was normal and killed their roles. Had they not, none of it would have worked near close to what it did. Finding out LA Sanji got LA Zeff the job is just glorious. One Piece hit me similar to how Arcane did..........in a completely different way. I can't seemingly get sick of watching it.......also have now watched quite a bit of the anime and well.........becoming obsessed.......and I had never heard of One Piece until a youtube channel the mixes reactors reacting to shows put out a few of the first episodes. Months after it aired. I still have a netflix subscription only for rewatches.

so, seeing as youre talking about wanting to see nami fight more - thats actually something that im REALLY looking forward to in season 2 and beyond, if thats in the stars for this series. bc im a big big big big nami fan in the manga/anime to the point that ive gotten her tangerine-windmill tattoo myself, and her fight in the next big story arc has been one of my favourites since i first saw it when i was a little girl. im SO excited (and a bit scared) to see how theyre gonna adapt her very unique weapon/fighting style in the future because god i have fantasized about being able to do what shes able to do for sooo long :D so yeah - i wanna see more nami fighting as well, and luckily, if they get to that point, we should see that in the next season aaah im so excited!!!

I love how you guys are talking about the love the cast had for One Piece, most reviewers missed that crucial detail. Everyone thinks Oda's involvement is the reason for the show's success, not that it was a team. Only way season 2 can fail if specific character looks bad, I pray they get it right.

This so far is a great talk. Ive been a fan of One Piece since 2012 when I was 20 years old, where I started fresh and caught up to the anime. The anime was around episode 580 at the time. I have watched the show 3 times over, with a friend and then my girlfriend both until the end of Dressrosa, around episode 750 or so. All that being said, I think the soundtrack is overlooked by alot of people. To Become the Pirate King and The Worlds Number One Oden Store built a feeling of wonder and adventure I had not heard in any other anime. It reminded me of all the adventurous JRPG's I played growing up, and gave me a sense of nostalgia even when I did not have any prior experience with One Piece. It quickly surpassed Naruto as my favorite anime, and unfortunately One Piece makes it hard for me to become a super fan of other animes. I would not trade it for anything though, and all I can do is sing its praises while recognizing its shortcoming. TLDR: Good talk, good show, great anime.
