For what it's worth, I much prefer The Blue Nile's 3rd album "Peace At Last" which is better for the added guitars as opposed to the prevalence of the synthesised sounds of the two previous two albums and they're better songs as well. "Peace At Last" is very under-rated.

It might’ve been bad for pop music, but when 1974 has albums like Relayer, Red, The Lamb, and many other prog rock masterpieces it becomes hard for me to not like it. Also, for the most part prog rock was the best genre of this year. I’m just not a fan of Queen so I didn’t like Sheer Heart Attack, Bowie is a good artist and Diamond Dogs was ok, and it’s the same with Steely Dan’s Pretzel Logic, Clapton’s 461 Ocean Boulevard, and Roxy Music’s Country Life. And Big Star and Lynyrd Skynyrd are also bad, but I would agree that On the Beach is one of Neil Young’s best albums.

That makes sense, I’m not a big prog listener so I didn’t really take those into account. I agree with you on Queen I’ve never been a huge fan of theirs, but I am curious - what’s your beef with Big Star?

Honestly, I would have to disagree here. Yeah, 74 did have a lot of shitty ballads and corny pop music like Donny Osmond and the like, but 74 still has plenty to deliver. I would honestly consider it the first real year for disco, though, some disco songs like Harold & the Blue Notes' The Love I Lost and MFSB's Sound of Philadelphia came out as early as 73. Yeah, it wasn't super popular quite yet, but it really started fully establishing itself as a genre by 74. Not to mention, that alot of the funk music that came out that year was pretty 🔥 as well, Jackson 5's Dancing Machine, James Brown's The Payback, Average White Band's Pick Up the Pieces, and the cream of the crop for that year, Ohio Player's Fire. There were other good funk songs as well, but the ones I mentioned are the best imo. On the rock side of things, you had Queen's Stone Cold Crazy, though I don't think it was a charting hit, it really broke ground for speed metal. Paul McCartney's Wings band also came out with Jet and Band on the Run which are classics, even though the album those songs are in came out in late 73, they still technically count imo. Not to mention the good rock songs you already mentioned in the video. But yeah imo, I'll take either 1961 or 62 for the worst year for music. All that was popular during that time was doo wop, teen idol pop, folk music, and surf music like the Beach Boys. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think the Beach Boys were corny af. I'll personally take early disco, funk, and hard rock over any of that stuff, any day!
@djspoongoon4104Ай бұрын
I definitely agree that all that music you mentioned is great, but I would say on average the other years of the 70s just had more good music released per capita. Compared to say, 1977 or 1972 it just can’t compete and the high amount of cheesy pop seems higher. I do agree that in terms of the worst year it’s probably somewhere in the early 60s. Honestly though I don’t think I could do a video about that because it would require listening to that supremely corny ass music… so I picked 1974! The Beach Boys in that era are definitely not good but you should listen to their 70s stuff. Songs like Sail On Sailor, Feel Flows and Surfs Up are stone cold classics that have none of the cheesiness of their earlier stuff. Definitely check those out. Thanks for the very considered and intelligent comment btw. I really enjoyed reading it and thanks for being so respectful even though you disagreed with me. I made this video sort of a while ago and I’ve changed a lot since then.
