My personal headcanon for this specific scenario: Frisk eventually got tired of playing the same old game, constantly resetting back to the beginning and unable to experience their happy ending, so their curiosity got the best of them. They became like Asriel/Flowey and started killing as a way to experience something new. Unfortunately that left them open to Chara's influence with their bloodlust eventually taking them over. Finally they confront Sans, the final checkpoint before completing the Genocide Route and doming the save file forever. Frisk despite having second thoughts and wanting to reset and undo the damage they've done, isn't in control at this point, Chara is. They go on to fight Sans and despite their pleading, eventually kill him, but as Frisk's line stated "you gave me advice," is interesting. I interpret it as Frisk taking Sans' Determination as inspiration to fight backI. They take the last dreggs of DETERMINATION they have to wrestle back control from Chara just as they confront Flowey to RESET and undo the Genocide Route.
