BIPR Cycling

This channel is about MTB and road bike cycling using the latest technology, especially smartwatches.
I have trained since 2009 with a power meter and did many amateur bike races in France with my wife. I am also found of new technologies and have IT skill, which is why I have created BIPR in 2018. We are building cycling applications to make life easier while cycling and training. This channel not only speaks about our applications (with tutorials), but also about many other cycling & technology related topics.

    What does it mean to have an accuracy of 7%? Is that a good thing? Since it's accuracy per device, shouldn't be "the higher, the better"? Why is it that the closest to 0 is better than closest to 100 (in terms of accuracy, isn't 100% accuracy the best?). I believe I'm misinterpreting the graph

  • @bipr
    @bipr7 күн бұрын

    7% means the real value is close to 7% to what the sensor gives you. If you have 0%, this means that the gives you always the exact value. Or 100% correlation gives you an exact value as well. My definition of accuracy in the video : standard deviation divided by the mean of the heart rate values. So lower is better.

  • @bipr

    The definition of FTP is the maximum power that you can hold for an hour. I agree with this, and I am not sure I could hold 255W for an hour; I think Strava's estimation is probably too high. On the other hand, I know I have never done a 20-minute all-out test, but I was able to hold 240W for 20 minutes. I think at least 240W can be sustained for an hour, but maybe not 255W. Strava takes the whole power curve into account to estimate FTP, gathering data from all your rides. Conversely, Samsung only uses data from the current ride and focuses on the 4-minute power peak. Currently, I am working on FTP estimation based on power-to-HR correlation, but Samsung seems not to use HR data (there was no HR data during the ride). I need to do more tests to better understand how Samsung's FTP estimation works, but I believe it is only based on your 4-minute power peak.If you perform a 4-minute all-out test, you will get an idea of your VO2max power, not your FTP. Even though there are slight differences between individuals, VO2max is often correlated with FTP (if you get fitter, your FTP will increase along with your VO2max). Therefore, it is not unreasonable to estimate FTP based on VO2max. As you suggested, consistency is what is most important. Personally, I don't need to know the exact value of my FTP; I am more interested in how big companies handle this concept. Sorry for the lengthy response!

    What do you think of the new Galaxy Watch Ultra?

  • @GadgetyMV
    @GadgetyMV7 күн бұрын

    I appreciate your testing, specially with external sensors. I find the Ultra way too expensive compared to what it brings of extra features compared to the Watch 7 (or the TicWatch Pro); apart from the materials, it's a bigger battery, and the 10 ATM rating, plus the button for workouts. The ATM is a static rating and Samsung one their web site specifically says it's not for diving below 1.5 meters. That's disappointing, compared to Huawei GT4 Pro, Ultimate, Garmin or the Apple Watch Ultra. I had high hopes for the new bioactive sensor and they claim a 30% improvement over the Watch 6 in terms of accuracy in tracking dynamic HR changes, but perhaps it's not enough. It will do other things such as AGEs, and probably more in the future.

    I was able to do 100km+ rides, so of course it will impact the battery but for a few hours it is fine. Maybe not for ultra endurance rides however... You can turn off GPS in HR2VP on the phone to optimize battery consumption. The screen of the phone needs to be ON, I'm not sure to see what you mean with stand by but if you press the power button to lock the screen once, the screen will be switched off and the app may not work properly. I invite you to try and confirm or not if it works. Concerning the subscription, you can try it for free for 15 minute workouts, in order to see if everything works fine and if so, the subscription is a bit less than 4$ a month. If you prefer to pay only once, the Lifetime is around 35$.

    I have been in a long-running battle with Hammerhead SRAM about my elevation gain results on my Karoo 2. The results have typically been 20-25% higher than Strava's adjusted data, sometimes a lot more even. SRAM has replaced my unit twice, including once within just the last few days. All three of the units report these errors. I see in your video that the Karoo 2 did pretty well. But here in Jackson, WY, my friends with Garmins get data that is very close to Strava's consistently. People with the Karoo 2, not so much. Even people with newer Karoo 2 units, like me. One person I know just got a Karoo 3 and it performs well. Anecdotal and not statistically significant, I know, but it makes me wonder if they have fixed the problem now and can't really claim that all newer Karoo 2 units now yield reasonably good results. My favorite one is: amzn.to/4ahXYCC It is rechargeable, accurate, comfortable, with led indicator, so very nice. If you prefer an arm band to a chest strap (a bit less accurate but OK), this one is good as well: amzn.to/44CwPsG Of course you can pick up a Polar or Garmin heart rate monitor, it is accurate as well but a bit more expensive. There is a new possibility which is not completely official but it should work: join the beta and get the latest beta for HR2VP Watch Bike Computer. Enable ANT+ broadcasting (even if your phone is not ANT+ compatible). A new Service will run in the background and transmit data to the HR2VP Data Field which you need to add to your profile screen on your Garmin GPS. To get the data field : apps.garmin.com/fr-FR/apps/ab94e897-c1a0-4d5c-9688-89ecfb11126a I am interested in your feedback if you try...

    Not sure what I did wrong. I have been using power meters for 20 years and know my HR at most given power outputs. The app doesn’t even get close. And it appears to drop out often do power starts to drop. I can’t get power output past about 120 watts. My ftp is about 235 right now.

    I invite you to check parameters : min heart rate, max heart rate (should be achievable, not theoretical), and set FTP at 235W in the app. If you know yourself, you can fine tune the FTP parameter, it doesn't have to be exactly your FTP. For some people, it is a bit more, other people a bit less... If you want a more stable power out (less sensitive to variations), you can set power values parameter to smooth (or in the middle) instead of accurate. It will be less responsive but more stable. Last suggestion, if you already have a power meter, you can connect it to the app and it will tell you the best parameter to use for the FTP at the end of the workout. This way you can calibrate HR2VP. Another question: which heart rate monitor do you use ? Are you sure it is accurate ?

    Hi, yes, it is possible to connect your watch to your Edge unit through your phone with ANT+ today, as described in the video. A new option should be available in the coming days (through your phone as well).

    After a few more rides, I had no data loss when connecting a heart rate monitor to the watch with the app HR2VP Watch Bike computer, which was not the case with the optical sensor of the watch. This might be the best option for sports enthousiasts...

    Nice compare, but 100h battery life cannot compare with a 12 - 14 days battery life of a Garmin, so the watches are to expensive i think?

  • @bipr

    You re right, bigger battery life for Garmin and often much more expensive. Can you now answer calls directly on Garmin watches?

    On my Garmin Fenix 6S i can answer WhatsApp messages with pre prepared messages and i can pickup an incoming call, i never test to talk during a workout or a ride. I always just stop to be save on the road.@@bipr

    Garmin is overrated .Ugly watch faces, terrible sleep tracking, button arrangement sucks. Workout data is the only good thing about it.

    I own a Samsung Mobile phone, so in theory there would be better integration with the Samsung watch though I'm unclear what difference this makes in practice. There is also the question of how much weighting each person would put on each score, but that is a matter of individual choice which this helpful analysis and scoring allows anybody to do. Thanks.
