Wow, imagine that: a man not afraid to open up his deepest fear to a woman, and a woman who won't judge him for what that deepest fear is...

the emperor: "what is that thing?" the interpretor: "that's a chair." - uses the Japanese word chair. I repeat: the already existing Japanese word for a chair. Oh the logic XD

The Japanese people and their culture is portrayed so inaccurately in this film. That's why things were unintentionally funny for me since I'm Japanese. The way they eat noodles, for example was so exaggerated, and to see old people eat like that-it was funny.

Thank you for your comment selty. Yes, the sterotypes are rather blatant, but not as bad as some of the other films made about Japan at that time.

This is one of most beautiful films from fifties, mainly due to its story and all those splendid locations. Thanks a lot for sharing with us this moment.

@HollywoodsJapan, hmm, you're probably right, I was just reciting from memory, I haven't actually sat through the movie in a long time.

Yep. On another note, many of the movies you've selected reflect a pre-1995 relations between japan and the US. I chose 1995 because it represents many changes between their relations. IE the clinton Hashimoto Summit, and increased Japanes involvement in US militaristic affairs. A combination of the second wave of propaganda promoting US goods in the 80's, which reflects the "cunning" japanese has diminished significantly since then.

So what do you think about the movie pairing Micheal Douglas with Ken Takakura? Takakura was shown to be effective, professional, in better control of his emotions and not emasculated at all, as far as I remember. Isn't there even a scene when Douglas interrupts Takakura's Kendo training and gets the finer points of Japanese philosophy taught to him by way of an asswhipping? And I wouldn't call Garcia's role a pillar of morality...more like stupidity and rashness.

come now! Japan had chairs since antiquity and were one of the first societies to work with lenses. They'd know what a telescope is. (that chair looked a bit machine made to me).

beautiful scene, if a bit overdone. I mean, they wouldn't turn the visit of a alternate culture ambassador into a religious event.
