    This is an incredible retrospective. I enjoyed every second of it. Thank you for taking the time to revisit such an incredible series. The story of the Legacy of Kain games has inspired me and has provided me with lots of inspiration to have hope in even the darkest moments. That closing quote of Defiance when Kain finally finds hope is so meaningful to me. So thank you kind sir for this video. I have subscribed to your channel and can't wait to watch more of your content.

    Thank you for those kind words. I very much agree, and like the ending of Defiance. Having heard of many people who feel like it's inconclusive and bad, I'm glad to have heard of more people who resonate with the ending's message.

    Ultima 9 - i would not mind any of the bugs and all, but the story.... why not start in hellscape britania and finding "zones that survived" and mobilize an army by proofing that you, the Avatar, are flawed, but have heart. Why all your friends followed you, why you won all the other folks over, making the people of britania realize, that this is a fight for the good things in life and that you can overcome darkness.

    Love these games. Soul Reaver’s opening intro cinematic made such an impression on me at a formative age that in my head the Legacy of Kain games are on a par with Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. But as much as I love them, and want them to be available for everyone to play them today, I don’t want a continuation. I know there are loose ends and a few plot holes, yet I find the ending of Defiance to suit the series better than any scenario of Kain destroying his enemies. That’s not as interesting to me personally as the story of Kain regaining a sense of hope.

    Thanks for watching! I tend to do a series of games one at a time, and once finished, make a compilation such as this, since during the Ultima series it became quite clear there were a lot of people who preferred a compilation instead of a playlist. So who am I to argue? :P

    I never played the first game! They need to re-port all to modern platforms (using DC version of Soul Reaver 1 for example), current PC versions need fan patches to even work.

  • @finntrovert
    @finntrovert7 күн бұрын

    Indeed! For me, the PC versions "work", depending on which PC I use. For example, Soul Reaver 2 doesn't even launch on my desktop, but does on my laptop. The fan patches are almost a necessity, and at the very least, GOG should talk with the mod developers and have those implemented by default to have wider modern PC support. That at least would be a band aid in case Embracer doesn't care enough to re-port the games.

    Even though it's only a few tracks the music for this game is amazing. At the time it was probably some of the most immersive pieces I had ever heard in a game. For anyone searching for it (or music for other old PC games) keep in mind that almost every video uses emulation.

    Other funny thing besides generators being shaped like the Electronic Arts logo at the time are: The murders accomplices Elizabeth and Abraham (nudge-nudge, wink-wink) and probably the Guardian himself who goes around conquering or destroying worlds (in contrast to Origin Systems' slogan which had the line "...we create worlds").

  • @JuanPerez-cs1gx

    One of my favourite games ever and I'm not a D&D or CRPG guy. For years I was obsessed with the Ultima series after playing this and I'm disappointed that even with all the money and huge teams that are required for modern games very few games have come close to recreate that feeling of a living, breathing world. Regarding finding out early in the game that an organised religion that sees itself as the ultimate good is actually misleading and follows a secret agenda is not really an spoiler. It's more like a "duh... no shit" moment. For me the mystery still worked because you find out about the Guardian, the astronomical phenomenon going on, the magic failing, the appearance of Fellowship, the ritualistic murders, and the people throughout the land hearing "voices" as separate things but you explore the world to find out how all these are related.

    Aar! Last video had editing issues. May or may NOT be an error by me. At least they didn't steal money this time ('they' can and 'they' have and 'they' do, I don't just mean in the physically correct socialist / globalist economic sense where they steal from the dead and the poor). So long as I live I'll do my best. Corrected vid link (I hope the video is correct): ||kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqqA26OaoZeWqNI.html

    1. I once tried playing this series of games, but I think the theme wasn't interesting to me at the time. But I do watch your playthroughs and reviews of them. One thing is that I never have patience for is platforming type puzzles, maybe because I never played them when younger. 2. Will you ever do a full playthrough of Planescape: Torment. The thing is, that like Ultima, and Baldur's Gate series to a different mode, it's a very personal RPG, so it's a question of whether you want to share the playthrough that you do, and/or whether you want to play for spectacle or not? But it'd be amazing if you did (maybe you already have? I will look through your posted videos after this and check). 3. Watch my take on the 1998 TV miniseries "Merlin" and 1978 Battlestar Galactica on my channel to humor me, I'm trying to say something with the composition. It's called "Merlin and Battlestar Galactica for the People" on my channel, will try to post a hard link in the next comment. Be ware. Thanks.

    I assume Gwenno dying in Serpent Isle was just overlooked? Or is the Gwenno here a trick of some sort? I could never get U9 to run at more than 1 frame every 2 seconds on my PC at the time so I never played past the arrival at LB's castle. It would loop endlessly "So you have arrived at last!...So you have arrived at last!...So you have arrived at last!" as my PC crawled to a halt as it tried to load the world.

    Great video. Regarding how games simply just pop up a million text boxes explaining game mechanics instead of doing it in a more subtle ingame fashion, unfortunately this has sort of become the norm these days. I guess it's just faster and easier to do for most devs instead of having to come up with creative ways to explain the mechanics.

    At first I would like to state that you created another very enjoyable piece of media, Finn. Furthermore I'm curious in which direction you *would* take the franchise if you were in the position to add another game - storywise as well as regarding the mechanics.

  • @finntrovert
    @finntrovert15 күн бұрын

    Good question, and I'm not sure. The obvious path forwards would be to follow Kain as he begins to learn more about the Elder God, whose nature even to players is mostly unknown. How does it connect to Nosgoth? Was it always there? If not, where did it come from? What power does it have? That could be connected with Kain having to thwart plans trying to prevent young Kain from ever reaching the point he is in now. As for gameplay? More like Soul Reaver, but with better combat and more puzzle variety. So a somewhat open-ish world that would unlock more as you gain spells which allow you to manipulate the environment, with those spells taking a major role in puzzles and boss battles, which would also have puzzle elements in them again.

Most ironic of all was the last gift that capitalist interests had given me: More powerful than the desire of corporations to endlessly recycle franchises, more acute even than the trust in indie developers making remakes of old games. The first, bitter taste of that terrible illusion - Hope.
