Do you know what pH the wasabi prefers? Also ever think about trying a drip system so that it mimics a river or something? It seems like it prefers to be able to drain easily.

I have 6 Daruma wasabi growing in 5 gallon pots. I live in LA in the South Bay along the coast. I'm in zone 10b and so far, so good. I catch water in rain barrels and keep the pots wet but not drenched. I feed with organic 5-5-5 fertilizer and use Sluggo (iron phosphate) to control slugs and snails. My soil is standard potting soil. Shade is must with dappled sunshine. I periodically spray with Monterey Disease Control and Spinosad for mildew and bugs.
@johnoshiro888522 күн бұрын
I also use azomite for minerals to mimic soil by a running stream which is the natural habitat of wasabi.

Hi, I am a beginner wasabi farmer in Korea. I see that you prune the leaves. Is it better to prune the leaves?
@rykytran4 ай бұрын
pruning leaves encourages the wasabi to make more young leaves but will inhibit the rhizome's overall size. so, if you want the wasabi leaves monthly, go ahead and prune. if your goal is for a larger wasabi rhizome, then do not prune

I don't think you gave an update on the difference between the 3 plants where you harvested to leaves and the 3 you didn't. I was also looking forward to you sharing how you divide the mature plants. I had three wasabi plants in the CA bay area, two of them I lost to root rot which taught me a lot about how important drainage is. I've also heard they can be grown in ponds with basket pots, so far I'm nursing the one plant i have left, but i have a small pond - I'll give that try next year if i successfully divide the one plant i have left. Crossing my fingers.

Check out for Wasabi Mosaic Virus. I lost all my (more than 1 year old) wasabi plants after one day I brought one little infected plant ;( Once plant is infected, there is no cure… others will get infected quickly by your tools and insect’s bite. It takes 1-3 months before the wasabi shows disease signs (starts with smaller and curly leaves) from the moment it got infected.

@@rykytran A quick question. Have you ever seen it where a wasabi plant has many diminuative leaves? Mine's grown a lot of leaves but they're all really small (the size of a coin) and have stayed this way for at least a month now. It does have some larger leaves, but only about 5. I'm growing it in a tall 2L pot.

The problem that I face is making the wheel round. So basically, for my needs, your video has helped me understand something I need to try. Not every method is the same but I'm willing to try it your way and see if I works for me. All in all thank you.
