  The peice that comes apart is a dog collar, not the slips. Its supposed a secondary safety device to stop the bottom drill assembly from falling in and you take your time putting it on and is usually checked by more than one person. Obviously wasn't put on very well here. Having said that, if that bit fell down hole, the driller should be fired for not having the blinds closed. They likely were, and are just giving the kid a hard time. All those pipe stands leads one to believe that they tripped to change the bit, and will be running back in so the blind rams should be closed. It would still be a pain in the ass to retrieve it but it likely only fell max 5-6 feet into the BOP; it could even have just fell into the cellar. Probably still be a lot of yelling and swearing.

  Dude, that's gotta be some third world BS.. Using chain wasn't legal back in the 90's when I started in Texas.. I've NEVER seen chain used to spin pipe in all my years in the patch.
