I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for posting it. It looks like you could run a Blunami-equipped locomotive on the same layout and at the same time as almost anything else - like MTH DCS, Lionel Legacy, straight old-time AC - without interference. Is that correct?

Hi Sid! I think you've created a great video here. I too, had heard of Blunami DCC, but was still on the fence with the same concerns voiced below by bernardbob. A friend of mine, who knows you, recommended I watch the above video of yours and I feel Blunami DCC, will be a real contender in 3 rail market. However, the smoke unit issue has to be addressed. Would love to hear from you, as this is something the market needs.

Hi! Just wondered what the purpose of the capacitor used with the bridge rectifier? I've seen a couple ac/dc conversions done on Pullmors using only the rectifier and they seem to run fine.

If that universal remote would just operate a powermaster, thus convential locos, it would be complete.

I am thinking about putting a Blunami 4008 sound system on a ROW KK 2 engine. Is this possible and how difficult is it install this system. I have found the engine and tender are extremely hard too open up to get to the electronics. I need to talk to you about this process before I start on it or have someone help me who has a lot o experience with these engines

Thanks for the video. I admired this set back when it first came out and as an elementary school kid, it was unimaginably expensive. As far as the sound, I remember at the time reading an article(maybe in the LCCA magazine? Maybe in the catalog where this was sold?) about the sounds on it. I wish I could locate it again, as I remember it having a lot of information. The J was one of Lionel's first Railsound II locomotives(first in the 1995 catalog with 611, then this one in 96), Neil Young was fresh on board with the company, and from what I remember he had people involved in making it the best they could at the time. They did record 611 shortly before excursion "retirement" in 1994. From what I remember, the article talked about how at the time, 611 had been run hard in excursion service and sounded very "tired." If I'm remembering this article correctly, they cleaned up the tracks for #611, but the #600 Warhorse is representative of how the locomotive actually sounded in 1994. Bearing in mind that it's been 25+ years since I read this article, I seem to remember that recording even sort of being the inspiration for making this model.

Thanks, Sid. After mulling over a Blunami upgrade for several months, I finally bought a 4408 and am installing it in an MTH PRR K4 that, basically turned into a really good looking doorstop due to failure of the MTH electronics. I went ahead and wired a bridge rectifier and a linear regulator into the K4 and it runs great. But, no smoke, no sounds and no reversing. I reluctantly bought the Blunami board because it solves all the problems except for smoke, specifically puffing smoke with even an inconsistent synch with the drivers. So it is great that you are talking about doing a video on adding that feature but, because of several comments on this post, I don't think many people understand what that means. You can't just add control of the smoke unit to the 4408, it just isn't that simple. And the 4408 does not have enough power to directly drive a smoke unit. Among the problems to solve are 1) how do you make the smoke unit "PUFF" at a rate that is similar to the rate of puff sounds coming from the decoder? Or, 2) is there a simple way to sense (opto or magnetic sensor, flywheel hash marks???) the position and rpm of the drivers for use in triggering the smoke unit fan? Is there some way to use such a sensing system as an input to the 4408 to synchronize with the puffing sound coming from the 4408? If you work out most of this, do you even need the 4408 to run a smoke unit that, like the sound output of the 4408 "approximates" how the smoke unit should operate? Smoke was one major thing that distinguished the post-war train hobby. I think it still is. All of the sophisticated electronics in modern engines are great but, to many of us, as these things turn into more doorstops, solutions such as the Blunami 4408 are the path forward. Without smoke, there is a void in toy train operation. As I progress with my modifications on my K4, I will be happy to share anything I work out but I think may of us would greatly appreciate anything you could do to advance this technology. Again, thanks for your videos. They are great!

Nice switcher engine I got the N&W 266 road name variant and won it on an ebay auction for about $180 or so dollars, easily 3.5 times less than its MSRP. I use it as my main switcher engine in the yards and even on short local runs to various industries (as they did IRL in the 1950s).

This is a pretty good model but, there are some things that you may want to change. 1. In the movie the wheels don't have silver lining on them you should change the lining to black. 2. Your model's railing is off on the left side. Make the railing connected. 3. In the movie on the pilot there is an empty part of it where there was a coupler but was removed. Add that to your model. 4. The whistle is not the sierra railway no. 3 whistle on your model. Please change the whistle sound to that. I hope these things help you improve your model. Watch @trainstorm1225 's video on his movie accurate model so you can get and idea of what I would like you to do.
