Hello, I'm Brian, but often go by Gizmo due to my nature of avoiding water, avoiding bright lights, and trying my best not to feed after midnight. In this channel I will discuss board game related topics to include general thoughts, reviews, how-to, and whatever other ideas that might pop into my mind. Check out my "Hello KZread" video to get to know me and my thoughts a bit more. Thanks for dropping by!

agreed, never heard of your number 1
Hi Brian. I was at Plaay.Con this year and agree 100 per cent with your insightful review and comments on SBX. I am a game designer and I play sports sims a lot. Take Care. Mike Fitzgerald
Hi Mike! Thanks for the comments. It was great meeting you there.
It's good to see newton getting some love. It's criminally underrated.
Thanks! Been on my "to play" list for quite a while. I was not disappointed.
Good list, I was not able to play a lot in June. Dome on BGA, some solo but that was it. I did some punching and sorting and learning games though.
That's about where I am in July. Looking to be a way less exciting recap!
Check out Xenon Profiteer if you like deck builders (this one has a little thematic shedding in it).
Thanks, I've not even heard of that one, I'll have to check it out!
Interesting video! For an O alternative, how about "optimal" - considering how it compares to other similar games. For example, is it a vanilla deck builder that's always going to pale in comparison to Dominion? Optimal is similar to original, just with a little different spin. Regardless, I like your rating system!
Thanks, I'll definitely consider it. If not the "optimal" title, at least adding those 'how does it compare' thoughts is a great idea.
Thanks for the list. Ark Nova is addictive. I think it takes a bit long with more players and we're all quiet. I'd also say that 5 min to get to #10 is a bit long. I saw the chapters afterwards
Agricola is Uwe's sole masterpiece.
My buddy owns it, just need to get it on the table sometime
All good choices.
Thanks!
I got Concordia because I loved the multiplayer but somehow the box never spoke to me to set up for solo. Sold the bunch at a loss (solitaria, all maps). I built For Northwood and I don’t understand the hype either. Distilled: mulligan your goals at game start.
Great video! Thank you for providing context how this compares to other similar games, that is very helpful!
I have had Shadows since it was released.
The crazy thing about Shakespeare is that the backstage expansion takes the game from a 7 to a 9 but it's even more expensive than the base game.
hadn't dug into the pricing, but I had heard that the expansion makes it that much better.
@@gizmoboardgames it really does. It opens up another strategic half of the game based on how many big tokens you have after the auction. And it's only a small deck of cards. I wouldn't mind selling mine normally, but it's so unique mechanically and thematically that I don't think I can really replace it.
Mic and camera looks good. Looks like youbare getting more settled in, into your new home. Hope USA is treating you well.
Thanks. Doing well, for sure, just trying to find more free time! HAHA
GizmoBo, nice job. I n Enjoyable, helpful after each title would be sole friendly, game length , cost, beginning age for players. Thanjs, Bill S. in Menominee, Michigan.thanks.
Thanks, I'll keep most of these in mind for next time! Though, cost, I think, is too variable, to try and pin down.
Some of my favorites from 2019 are. . . Star Wars: Outer Rim Circadians: First Light Paladins of the West Kingdom Maracaibo Scout Liberation (Little PnP game that was surprisingly good) Games I'd like to try. . . Clank: Legacy Pax Pamir Res Arcana Tapestry Obscurio
Really solid year for gaming, there were too many to list and keep the video relatively short.
Curious if you've played Clank: Catacombs?
No, but it looks like a lot of fun, and new way to get more variety out of Clank!
Yeah, it shot the Clank system into my top 10.@@gizmoboardgames
Pandemic and Orleans are on my top 10 as well. I've been wanting to try Clans of Caledonia. Looks like a lot of game in a smallish box.
Clans of Caledonia really does pack a lot into a tiny box. Be on the lookout for the reprint and expansion coming to Kickstart soon. Next few weeks, I think
Oh, wow! I didn't realize there was going to be a reprint. Thanks for letting me know. @@gizmoboardgames
Yup, those are reasonable
Just wondering where in the states you’re located? I’d love to find someone like yourself to play test some games!
Having a game on the list after playing it one time, seems wrong,
I agree to an extent, but it's still a game I prefer over many of the others it matched up against, and really wish I had more opportunities to play more heavier Euros. But if it doesn't have a solo option, the heavier games are likely to sit unplayed for longer than I'd like. Also, how many people who rate Twilight Imperium 4 super high have played it numerous times? That game takes an entire day to get played. Sometimes an enjoyable game is enjoyable. If I had played it more often, it'd probably have cracked my top 10.
@@gizmoboardgamesthat makes sense :)
Ohh champions of Midgard at 42! Nice! Can’t wait to see ur top 10!
I will need to work on top list sometime this year
let me know when/if you do!
I appreciate figures that are not too big. Painted is even better, but blocks and standard pawns are usually fine with me, too. Stonemeier games consistently have quality components, good rulebooks, and fun games.
Stonemaier always seems to put forth some good components, for sure.
Your timestamps are off. Every year there are more new games. I don’t see the point in this continuing focus on the future. Anyway didn’t see anything interesting yet.
Thinknthe next directional game series from Garphill will be.... xxx of the Wild West. Outlaws, Frontiers, Lawman, Settlers, Explorers
I like the idea, but they'll be going East. Maybe after, they can swing to the wild west!
😄 "PromoSM"
Roleplaying games are great Ian, but 5e is at the lower end of them along with Pathfinder and 4e. Try to branch out and try other RPGs! If you like official D&D I suggest Hyperboria the new 3rd iteration, otherwise Dolmenwood or Old School Essentials. Race for the Galaxy is pretty amazing, especially with an expansion. Concordia is pretty fun, but long and drives a lot of analysis paralysis.
Welcome to America!
Have you heard of Superstar Baseball... A sports illustrated game. Seems similar to the baseball game you mentioned. I remember playing it a lot worth my best friend when I was 16
This game captivates me as I like euro games with worker placement, resource management etc. Great concept for a solo board game, as it really appears as a board game for one player. Retail price so far is expensive, so I need to wait to purchase, to see if price drops other than what I found a major retailer website. Thanks for your review!
You could cut that intro time from 13 to 7-8 seconds. Compare to SUSD with their 1-second intro.
Thank you for the time stamps. It makes things much easier for the viewer.
been trying to add them more, when I don't care about trying to hide things for anticipation.
I agree that all those kids that got massively marketed to in the 80s/90s with board games as toys are now adults that still like games. I was definitely one of those kids!
Me too!
I hope the move doesn’t go well and you have to stay and play board games with me
Hope all goes smooth! Looking forward to more when you can.
I hope the move goes well, and you enjoy the new job.
Thanks, James! Can't say it's been the smoothest so far, but we're working on it.
One of My favourite games! So (indirectly) interactive and original.
Great job reviewing one of my favorite game companies and their products, thank you
Wayfarers and Final Girl are really good. I had Ares Expedition but sold it after I terraformed Mars 😂 Disney Villainous is one of my favorite 2 player games and I do not have any interest on playing it solo. I was thinking about buying After Us but I’ll definitely won’t anymore ✌️🙏
I like After Us for an intro to engine building and resource generation/usage, but it's not the strongest if you're a heavy solo player.
@@gizmoboardgames thanks. Also, I’m glad I found your channel. I like your content. New subscribers here! 🤩
Paperback adventures is my best solo game of september so far!
Never been much of a words game person, but I've heard great things about that one!
@@gizmoboardgames neither have I, so this was a nice surprice!
Nice overview! Too bad the games are really expensive, personally I won't buy them for the reason you mention: I can buy 2 or even 3 other games for that same amount of money. I love Feld games, but the pricing aspect makes me taking my business elsewhere, it's no fun anymore. Vital Lacerda games, same thing... so many others.
Just getting into Lacerda too. Eagle Gryphon's quality is way better than Queen Games, at least. Both are pricey, for sure.
Hey Bryan!
Heya, welcome back!
@@gizmoboardgames thanks Bryan. I have been busy lately. Keep going, your vids are very enjoyable.
Let's go'
I played this a few times in December/January. It was a fun game and I think I’d have played it more had I not received a ton of new games for Christmas. For the price, definitely worth it. I think I paid under $25 for it, which is crazy. I do really like the art and look as well. Don’t care too much that the theme is pasted on either. I did think the rule book wasn’t as clear as it could have been in parts. I recall playing wrong with the clear dice and dice costs in a way that made it more punishing the first time I played, but nothing too crazy. Overall, I think it was a really fun game though with some good thinky mechanics. Need to get it out more often.
Glad to hear you're enjoying Disney Villainous! I wish I had someone to play that with because it's definitely one that people either love it or hate it. The solo is a nice alternative to get to explore the decks for sure.
I probably wouldn't have given it another shot, if you hadn't pointed out the solo option. Now, I at least get to experience the variety the game offers.
Agree on Phase 10, Rolling Realms and 7 Wonders. I still love Dinosaur Island. The solo from Totally Liquid is much better for sure.
Hey Bryan! Sunday drop, let's go!
Love Cribbage. Want to try Obsession and Distilled. Good list!
Obsession is so good! I hope you get a chance to play it more. Have you tried Boonlake? It's got a similar action selection mechanism where everyone plays on every turn. Really neat game.
Not yet, but know you like it a lot, so I just got it 2nd hand.
