    It's a damned shame that a B-29 that was a US national treasure that could fly was given to a British museum just so it could be put on static display. When you think that there are only two B-29's flying now in the US and this could have easily been a third flying here it being given to a museum in another country to be put in a museum is a national disgrace. If they just wanted one for static display they should have been given one that wasn't able to be restored to flying condition, not a flying airworthy plane.

    Yep , parking that there might cause a stir ! Parking a Corvette in Peak Forest car park does likewise. And to think , when my 3300hp 'daily driver ' was parked behind said 'Vette, i often thought to meself...' I've driven engines with less power than that car' !

    Great video ! Had never given a thought that she was flown over . By all accounts a wing and a prayer !!! I've peered up into the undercarriage and that in itself is an engineering masterpiece !

    That's incredible that any footage exists of Little Barford. Incidentally I got a model of her the other day, made by Hattons. I don't suppose anyone knows why these engines had wasp stripes?

    Wow this brings back memories. I was on the other end of this journey. I lived in Tucson Arizona and was 10 years old and seen them test flying and seen this plane the day it left for England. Great video. Thank you for posting this.

    I watched the B-29 take off from Tucson, AZ, on the day it began it's ferry to Duxford. The tail of the plane had a plywood board that said THE END on it. You can barely see that in this video.

    Those engines were smoking quite a bit. Probably long overdue for a engine overhaul. I read somewhere that the engines weren't very reliable in military service.

    Yeah, but this was the only time this B-29 flew in civilian service. They only made this one airworthy with the rego G-BHDK just to get it to Duxford from storage at China Lake

    This b29 was sadly beyond repairable to flying conditions…..it was lucky to even get in the air at that times and wouldn’t have last long if it would be repaired to flying conditions

  • @cogboy302
    @cogboy302 Жыл бұрын

    @@joshkeene8457 , but it managed to cross the Atlantic to get to the UK. It would be nice if Duxford would get it airworthy again. They do have the 'Sally B' B17 in flying condition. Seen it at Duxford and at airshows in Northern Ireland back in the early '90s. Would be nice to have the B29 in the sky again. Only Fifi & Doc are currently airworthy. I didn't even realise there was a B29 at Duxford until about a week ago. And I was there in 1992. Don't remember seeing it. Must have missed that hangar. I'll have to take a trip down south to go have a nosey at it.

    Nowadays they can restore just about any aircraft to flying condition but it would cost a fortune and take a long time.

    The final shot of the firebox from the footplate reminds me of watching the tankys getting cleaned out at eccles. @ 8.04 an engine passes under a water bridge (that's what I called it back then) it had a coal brazier on one side and we had a fire in it one day to keep warm. Must be nearly 50 years back now.
