Hello and Welcome to CTD (Cars Trucks And Detours.. AKA SteveAZ711).
I do repairs on my computers, house, autos, trucks, and my yard so just about anything may pop up here. I generally make a video of something that I think may be of interest, or a repair that I happen to be doing. I have a couple of project vehicles, and four wheelers, that will most likely show up on KZread in the future.
I am used to working by myself and sometimes I utilize non-standard procedures for doing things. However, I like to think "Safety First" in my repairs. My videos are intended for entertainment purposes and one should always consult a professional before attempting a repair that you do not feel safe or qualified in doing.
Videos are posted irregularly so I recommend a subscription (it's free) so you can be notified when the next video is ready. Remember to Subscribe and to click the Notification bell.
Thanks for watching!

awesome video very clear and good english
My 2003 does the same thing. Lift up on the wiper blade lever (as if you were trying to clean your windshield) then turn the key and crank the car. Then release the lever. Starts every time.
That is very strange indeed. But if it works then I would say that is a great car thief deterrent. Thanks!
@@SteveAZ711 If you don't know the trick...car wont start. Car won't start...can't steal it.
I recently changed my sensor in my hhr......as soon as i got the sensor off, some fluid poured out ....any thoughts?
Probably not enough to make any difference. If the H is running and driving fine and the temperature is right where it should be then everything is likely ok. Thanks!
My 77 400 has the dip stick on the driver's side? Why is yours on the passenger side?
If you have a rear sump pan, you want the dipstick in the rear of the pan. If you have a front sump pan, you want the dipstick to go through the front of the block. Thanks.
@@SteveAZ711 yep. Mine is in the rear of the pan. I was wondering why some are in different places. I have a 66 f100 with a 77 400. Just trying to understand the engine better.
Too much talking, not enough showing. I shouldn’t have to watch 7 minutes just to see how to do this
Hope your repair went well.
Nice job! Feel bad for you laying in that dirt. I would have to find a parking lot somewhere lol.
Seems I have been doing it a lot since I moved from the city. However, from time to time in town, friends vehicles seemed to always be in the back yard and in the dirt of course. I am still in the process of moving to a better place and it has some concrete. IN hindsight I should have poured a slab some years ago. Thanks for the comment!
awesome job
Ya gotta love the vehicle. Thanks!
good job
Ya gotta love the ole truck. Thanks!
I used a Turkey bastor to suck out the old brake fluid.
Turkey basters work very well! Thanks for the comment!
I have a lot of customers who use the Haslet Frame that seals against water leaks and gives you a flat surface to install your fan.
It is another option consider for sure.
This video saved me, I was about to lose my mind
They work O K
They do, Thanks!
I've considered having mine done even though the manual says it isn't necessary with regular use. I only hesitate because of how doing a change can cause issues later if you go too long on the current fluid without changing it. Mine currently has just over 98,000 miles on it. How many miles were on the fluid in your HHR?
Probably 300000. The original owner all but drove it into the ground. If you are looking for more information. I suggest calling a dealership and asking them how often they recommend a fluid change on a 2.4l or 2.2l engine. Thanks.
@@SteveAZ711 Will do. Thanks for responding!
Thanks a million!!
Very Welcome!
Thank U for this HELPFUL tip, it worked for me in literally 2 seconds later my key was FINALLY OUT!!! It has been doing this for a while & it’s soooo helpful to know that I can finally have a solution without costing me hundreds of dollars that I don’t have right now!!! Thanks again 🤗 you’re a lifesaver!!!
Thanks for the great comment and I was happy to have helped. The repair for this is another video I made involving the floor shift gear selector. The repair Is not all that easy but can be done. Thanks again!
thanks that is what i needed to know
You are very welcome!
You did it professionally
Thanks!
I laughed when you found the problem, but this was a great video for me, I appreciate seeing how it all comes apart before I do a camera install.
Glad it helped!
307k and still going bought our hhr new in 2007
Super Nice! Yours is definitely a keeper!
Gracias excelente video
Muchas gracias!
Hey great video, do u know what's the size for the bleeder valve in the rear?
Here are some posts that may answer your question. www.chevyhhr.net/forums/brakes-%7C-suspension-%7C-shocks-%7C-struts-24/need-rear-brake-bleed-screw-61706/
What size battery does it really use. I believe the guy I purchased my car from changed the battery size
Here is a link that may answer some questions you may have.
thank you good sir.
You're welcome
Great video! Did you have to pull the distributor out to remove the icm?
No I did not have to pull the distributor. I did turn it though, and reset the timing afterwards. I used a 1/4 in deep well socket to get to the screws. They can be a pain as some 1/4 sockets will not fit down into the screw hole. Thanks!
Ive been thinking of swapping mine out as Im having lots of bucking/stalling/hard shifting issues when its hot outside. Runs like a dream in the cooler mornings going to work. Ive been wanting to check this off my list of many suspects but I was always told I had to drain my coolant first. Seeing you do it this way gives me a bit more motivation to knock it out
Sounds like a plan to track down an annoying issue.
Nice to see a truck that old with no rust , north east bad on trucks
Thanks! It has always been located in the Southwest. It is the heat that does the damage to the plastic parts out here.
Great video sir thank you . I just got a mint 1988 f350 dually that sat for 6 years ,I got it going but thinking to drop both tanks clean inside and rust proof outside as we live in a salt area . BTY it’s stick a beast
It is a lot of work, but well worth the effort!
I have been turning wrenches a long time and that’s the first time I ever heard of paper towel trick. Outstanding thank you
Thanks! I think it was something I read many years ago. Kinda fun!
@@SteveAZ711 tried it the other night worked like a charm. Stay safe out there
The cable does not just go back the way it can out that's literally the only reason I was watching this video dude. Failure
Sorry you were disappointed.
Thank you for being as descriptive as you are with the complete process!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, Steve, for sharing. You're a good❤ man. I love your personality. I look forward to watching much more.
You are welcome! Thankyou!
What a great tutorial for this Ford truck, have a 1980 with exactly the same issue. This helps a ton! Thank you!
Glad it helped. Thanks!
May l ask how much you charge to do the six parking lot spaces?
I did not charge anything. This was a family favor.
The sight glass is the drain plug..
Thanks for the comment!
Did you put transmission fluid in a power steering pump?
I used Mercon V transmission fluid. Thanks!
@SteveAZ711 what is the benefit of transmission fluid in the power steering pump?
@@annabee2345same thing pretty much for these cars.
Is this the same for the 2.0 LHU?
I am sure they are similar.
Part number please
I lost it. I called the dealership to get one.
It's the electric gearbox the shaft that comes out of the electric gearbox has a plastic bushing and it lets that just wiggle around and make noise
Thanks sounds reasonable.
Man! Thanks! You are a awesome teacher! You make it easy not to make the mistakes we overlook. Specifically marking the threads on the bolt.
I appreciate that! Thanks!
Both keyways point straight upward at top dead cylinder (i.e., cyl. #1 = frontmost cyl. of engine @ TDC) and the two gear marks align.
At 26:08 I show the timing marks aligned. I only looked at the keyways when I was installing the gears onto them. Thanks!
It's not known as a salad fork it's known as a pickle fork
Thanks ! I know that. Cant talk and think at the same time. Big tenedor in any case.
I have an HHR. It's crazy how my key got stuck. I play music using my phone into the car's 1/8" plug. I turned off the car and music console but forgot to shut down or unplug my phone. It was still plugged in and playing music on the phone, but since the car was shut off it wasnt playing over the car speakers. And it drained the car battery dead, even with the car turned off. Luckily I carry a portable charger everywhere.
I carry a portable charger as well. They are very handy! Thanks!
Just had an alternator die after 7 years from last replacement. Had a belt from that last replacement too. Replaced them both cuz who is going to reuse a 7 year old belt? My new belt required a second person to slip it on while I cranked the tensioner and it barely cleared with the tensioner fully cranked!!!! No way in hell I could have done it alone.
I had no trouble with my belt. I hope your belt is not too tight. I always check the belt size with the old one too make sure. GM would not require 2 mechanics just to change a belt. Sorry you had that difficulty as I know new belts can be quite stubborn to put on while holding back pressure on the tensioner.
Do you think it is safe to do this at 125,000 miles?
Check out other people asking the same question. I would change mine... but you may not want to change yours. LINK...www.chevyhhr.net/forums/maintenance-upkeep-50/miles-between-transmission-fluid-change-32272/
Good to know it's possible but that job would test my patience and id send it to the local garage and overpay for labor
I can truly sympathize with you on that. This is not fun times at all. Thanks!
Good content
Thankyou!
Very good video sr, you said 7 qts of fluid when I drained fluid I has a little extra and a little thicker fluid, compare with new that is more thin, you think maybe some one add an additive, cause I've had this car for 12 years and haven't replace fluid till now ,with 173000 miles on it
It is possible. Thanks for the nice comment!
Very helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful! This is one of the easier ones. Thanks!
Should have changed out the rotors also....those things have seen better days....lol
They only have 335000 miles on them. They are just now getting broke in. LOL
What if the cap is stuck and won't come off
Use a 32mm socket and extension to remove it. Large vice grips maybe. An 1.25 in. socket may work as well. If you happen to break the cap...Amazon sells a replacement. These caps can be cross threaded and very difficult at times so take your time when installing or removing them. Just sayin. Yours is probably just on tight. Keep the threads clean for a better installation. Hope this helps. Thanks! link...amzn.to/49yJ0HW
