    One thing ab linux distros is that most of them only support x86* ISA based CPUS. There very few that support RISC (ARM chips etc) based CPUS. I know openBSD supports all ISAs basically & OSx, which is a subclass of its superclass, bsd, also supports ARM chips, which is a w.

    But I did install Slackware back in the early 90's... on a 386 PC motherboard I dropped into a free IBM PC 5150 case. Also ran Windows 3.1 with Sidebar on it, which I still do have a screen snapshot of. Right next to my Mac SE. Bought a new motherboard at a swap meet with a 120mghz "80586" chip because Pentiums were pricey. Then a Performa 476 which was a sweet machine. After that I jumped to a whitebox 300mghz AMD 3DFX now chip and a 3DFX Voodoo2 GPU I built myself with parts bought from SuperComm. But yeah, all distros swk. I've got a huge box full of burned out CD ISOs from back in the day that will never be installed again. Back then you had to burn them out to CDrom, there was no booting or installing from a USB drive ISO. Count that as progress, that at least you don't have to go through a stack of CDROMs or DVDROMs any more just to try things out.

    I know the video is a joke, but Gentoo has some of the best hardware support of any distro. It supports like every even vaguely relevant architecture out there. That's the power from customization and compiling things yourself. But granted, most people are using some modern AMD64 CPU and thus don't really need Gentoo for much.

    fucking hell. Try not using reddit for your information? I think forums on linux distros are still no1 place for information

  • @danielrhouck
    @danielrhouck7 сағат бұрын

    I’m not saying it doesn’t suck (it’s worse than Gentoo in all the ways Gentoo is bad) but I still can’t believe you didn’t mention LFS. Also Arch might be bad but I don’t think it deserves to be in F tier *twice* in the thumbnail.

  • @TechDregs

    LFS @3:27, and the other A is actually Arcolinux.

  • @danielrhouck

    @@TechDregs I caught the sentence but missed the screenshot you briefly switched to for LFS. And oops, I thougut the second one was an older Arch logo; that makes sense. Hard to see at thumbnail size on a phone instead of a big screen

    Honestly I just pulled up some random Linux tier list thing and used that. I didn't even know arcolinux existed. LOL.

    Arch hasn't been plagued with breaking for over a decade now and has been pretty darned solid! The most important thing most Linux users seam to still be oblivious to, is not "What can a distro do for me", but "What will this distro allow me to do, to make it work for me specifically, my way of doing things, my workflow..." Well Arch with KDE Plasma is the freaking Swiss army knife of computing, and the best starting point for just that, but anyone in the false belief that some distro will come along seemingly perfect for you is delusional to begin with. I have been on Arch/KDE for over 15 years, and I don't think I can say it will ever be perfect, only that I found it to suit me best, and I had to do a lot of work to make it that way, it didn't just fall into my lap that way! THERE IS NO ONE SIZE FITS ALL, NEVER WAS, NEVER WILL BE!

    I love linux but well gaming is not what the OS was designed to do... looking at the history of *nix, you can see that it was (primarily) aimed at developers, altough unix had a larger target audience, but yeah, might as well just use both windows & linux (if u want) only schizos care THAT much ab privacy + its easy to opt out of telemetry on windows, fuck as an example in the case of dotnet, all u hv to do is create an environment variable 😂

    Jokes aside, everyone is trying to resolve their cognitive dissonance. Everyone wants to believe they chose the "best". People need to learn to not base their self worth on the idea that they are always choose the "best". Is my distro "the best"? Honestly, IDGAF if it's the best or if someone thinks it sucks. It does what I need it to do. It doesn't give me more hassle than I'm willing to tolerate. It's good enough. If that changes, I will likely switch to another. That's the nice thing about Linux, though. If I don't like this one, I can bail out and try another. In fact, when I encounter a "which distro" thread, I tell them, "Just try them all and see which one fits you. It costs you nothing but time." It might even help you recognize what you need from a distribution. Also, Windows sucks. It's objectively the worst. It's better to give up a few games with root-kits than to allow Microsoft the ability to spy on you and not give you full control of your PC.

    When you switch I highly recommend Mint for ease of use and general compatibility. Works out of the box for most and generally the only games which don't work are those with anti-cheat software requirements (which ironically don't stop cheating in those games). I am glad you've tried it before, but it seems to be improving at a very steady rate.
