I’m glad there’s still 15,000 mark one focuses still left in Britain
As the MK1 focus is one of my most favourite cars and I take a picture of one every time I see it
Hi Andy can you please keep your fingers crossed as my focus has got its MOT on Thursday morning ive managed to find the foam inserts that ford put in when customers wanted a full size spare wheel 😊
Great video Andrew, beautiful Scorpio Ultima there. The ruched leather would have been from new and was found on some other Ford's including early mk1s. Was dropped in favour of a smoother and probably cheaper style leather.
st170 owner here, now working on the passenger side and found that nasty rear sill rot. Was fine on the driver side but the passeneger side has rotten through. Luckily its a project car so looking forward to grinding back to fresh metal and fabricating the odd angles to weld back into something strong again. Im sure i keep seeing the 5 door models of the same year just looking so much more rust free?
All my project cars date from 1996 to my 04 focus. I have a 2007 Alfa Romeo 159 that I've had to sort out rust issues. And on balance my 1996 Lexus LS400 is very solid for 28 years old. My first car was, at the time in 1994, only nine years old, and totally rotten. Things have come on a long way for sure. Although you always see similar aged VAG cars are rusting worse than Mk1 Focus's
Rare does not equal desirable. That is the very much the case here!
Nice one, 👍i wonder if your Iron solution would work on a Rover 600 dodgy clock/radio display? 🤔
possibly!
@@usuallyfixingtinkering Hmm… 🤔that’s what ‘I’ thought too 🙃
Ffirst time seeing a iron to fix a part on a car 😂. But as it works fair enough 👍.
100%, its a superb fix!
Grand old job 👌
:)
Does the MK1 focus 04 year petrol 1.6 have a tensioner, mine is not budging, unable to release the belt tension, could it be seized?
yes if it has air con!
@@usuallyfixingtinkeringmine has a/c can't release the tension will remove the stud Instead.
I bought that AX on EBay back in April for £530, clutch started slipping on it so I had that changed + a cambelt changed too, I’ve since driven it through wales and taken it to the festival of the unexceptional, I absolutely love it! My friend showed me this video and that’s what convinced me to buy it, great vid!😊
Nice one gosh I am really glad its gone to a good home, that's a really nice example... now I need to phone Andy for my commission!!
@@usuallyfixingtinkering of course, you deserve at least 50% haha!
What's the best way to access the tensioner pulley? Is the bolt 15mm or 17mm? Do you pull down or pull up to release the tension?
with a tensioner you pull downwards unless I'm mistaken and it should be a 15mm
Thank you for covering the show, see you again soon!
Any time! Great show!
ford probe.... in red... at 15...00 mins...you didnt see that !!!!!!
@@whodeanimania712 there was a lot I didnt there was too much to see tbh. Huge show but you don't know where to look!
Why so few comments?. This is a great channel. However, ive recently sold my 1.6 mk1 to buy a 1.6tdci titanium x mk3... already wish i still had my mk1!.. keep up the good work Andrew. Regards, Andy.. n.e. lincs.
@@travisperkins100 some videos can get much attention and some don't. These videos especially but I make the videos because I find it interesting and so do a small number of people like yourself! Thanks for your support really acknowledge comments like this :)
My 2002 ford focus has had a plate welded into the sill about 3" x 6" oblong, other than that its solid All the rest of the sills where they meet the floor pan are solid and the forward jacking point is a bit squished, A/ C has never worked central locking has packed up .. should last me till i retire
That sound very reasonable for that age :)
Designed to destroy your Engine inside out. Poor power poor economy ... My Toledo only on e5 97 or 99 Ron.. Do not use E10 on vintage or carb engines it forms a blue crystal stuffs it.
it wont help them put it that way!
Thankyou for this Andrew, your so easy to listen to and make so many good points. Cars were my big escape during ' the lost years' when I lived and worked at a Hotel. Although cars can also be a catalyst for mental health issues aswell. Your videos are a big help😊.
cheers david, I'm always aware of my own mental health especially with cars :)
F432GYC, a 24th April 1989-registered mk3 Fiesta 1.1 L in a very popular Ford colour called Maritime Blue, used to be seen driving around a lot in Exeter. Sadly, I haven't seen it around much lately, I hope it's still in existence. A CarVertical check says its mileage was 24955 in November 2020, so it may hopefully be in the process of restoration work.
@@owensteele1645 wow that's interesting info I will add that as a possibility!
Indeed. Fe2O3 is the worst invention of the Universe. Shame on that old fellow, with long gray beard.
iron oxide is certainly that! All chemical elements are designed to break down and return to the earth. Like everything given time.
If it makes you feel any better, which it probably won't, BMWs of a similar era also rust like mad. E46 3 Series and E39 5 Series both suffer. Thing is, these cars are less of a throwaway car than a Ka or a basic Mk1 Focus.
Perfectly correct and I think it shows that MK1's on a whole are not that ad with corrosion as others like BMW's from the time! E39's are wonderful cars but do rot badly.
@@usuallyfixingtinkering Yes, I spent almost £3k on getting the rsut done on my E39. I don't think many would be willing to spend that on a Ka excpet perhaps a SportKa or a Mk1 Focus other than an RS or possibly an ST. Similar story with the '90s Puma, which is a shame.
A 90's Puma I think is worth the investment given most people really take well to the car and it's increasing rarity.
@@usuallyfixingtinkering I don't think so many would be willing to spend the £2-£3k to get the sills & arches done for a car that, at best, will be worth £2-£3k.
yep!
Hi will a cluster fault cause the car not to start?
nope not at all
Mine still seems solid but will need to get round to removing the arch liners. So it won't be perfect but will have a look. Don't think its just a mk1 issue thought. Another great video. Thanks.
Please do buddy because you don't know until you check them how good those areas are.
Do you by any chance know if the little white plastic 90° knee that stays on the fuel rail when you disconnect the fuel at 7:05 can be switched out? Mine broke from old age and I'm hoping I don't have to replace the whole fuel rail.
Get a 2nd hand rail because they can go brittle and removing them is not recommended!
@@usuallyfixingtinkering Actually managed to remove it by drilling it out but I doubt I can get a replacement without the whole rail with it. Thought about going to a scrap yard for a replacement rail but the plastic would probably still be brittle. I'll see what I can get as a new OEM part.
Mercedes, VW, mazda, BMW, From the same eara rust really badly! Ive never seen any really rusty Mk3 Mondeos from that era, ive had a few mk3 mondeos over the years, and never had any rust issue,
The MK3 Mondeo had rust issues in the first years because of low quality sealer and poor paint techniques where they would apply sealer before electro coat. They fixed this later and the later cars (from 2004) rarely have major rust issues as you say, which was a big improvement even though Ford never came near the levels of brands like Volvo, Renault or Audi.
not as badly as things were improving slowly
The front wings go due to the bumper rubbing, Ford call it a "touch concern"!!
That sounds about right! They do touch easy other.
Hi Andrew that ford escort mk2 rally car has ls3 6.2l v8 470bhp great video
Oh my goodness! That must be quick. Cheers buddy glad you enjoyed it!
Nice to see your coverage as I missed FOTU again this year. Have they scrapped the minimum 25 year age entry requirement now?
I wasn't aware they had one, they say 2002/3 ish
@@usuallyfixingtinkering Must have changed the rules since I went in 2021 and 2022, as it was definitely vehicles 25 years or older in the show area (not just the concourse). Either that or the whiff of the ticket money proved too strong for them to resist 🤣
Great video. You could eat off the bottom of that car. We use salt on our roads in the winter (4++ months) and you'd not believe the rot.
I can believe it on these after a few months of salt!
My 2007 Mk1.5 doesn't have any rust points at all. Perhaps this is something from early units?
Or perhaps differences in climate? I live in south of Brazil, close to Argentina, where the last MK1.5 were produced.
@@rafaelroma1657 yes climate is the most important factor... in harsher climates where they salt the roads, only the most protected cars can last a decade or more without any rust issues or only minor rust issues.
On early Focus cars, the entire length of the sills were covered over by chunky plastic covers that could be hiding all-sorts.
absolutely which is why i'm suspicious of what's behind them!
Even when they were quite new, early Focuses used to catch rust on the inner edges of the door skins where they marry up with the door shells. As a result, door bottom rust was quite common, even when the mk1's were still current. The first mk3 Mondeos suffered the same way.
Clinched flange sealant fault, there was a TSB, the state of some doors that they would "repair" and refuse to replace was unreal.
I had a failure of the sealant on the drivers rear door it was showing surface rust from 2 years old, ford wouldn't cover it despite their at the time 12 year anti corrosion warranty, so I left it. It never got any worse in the whole 8 years that I owned it, never had a car since that has handled as well
Excellent, really informative video yet again Andrew. Great content.
Much appreciated!
I'm sure 2002 and 2003 were the Focus's worst rust years. This corrosion @22:12 to 23:26 is very similar to what I once noticed on a silver Focus TDCi Ghia that visited our garage about 7 years ago, which then had to be scrapped. My line manager had to call the customer to come over so he could show them why it failed its final MOT big time. The car was EF52VBD, the MOT history is damning. It makes me wonder how young this particular Focus was, when its first-ever rust spot had appeared in its body shell.
That particular Focus had around 60,000 miles taken off its mileage in 2007, and was scrapped in November 2017 at around 167,000 (or rather it should have been 227,000 miles) so any major work on it was never going to be worth doing.
Think you forgot to mention the area where the control blade bush sits, they rot and lift your back seats up lol
Any area of any car can rot given the time, exposure to certain elements. This is not an exhaustive list but personally I have not known a MK1 to go in this area but it's always possible given the right conditions.
I remember the original Mk1 being advertised with a guaranteed 10 years rust free, or Ford would take care of it. Naturally they and their dealers never stepped up to the plate and found every wiggle room out of this so called 10 year warranty.
absolutely spot on, that perforation warranty meant nothing on paper!
my focus sills need doing, i failed mot for it, in great shape otherwise
the whole length of the sills? That wont be cheap it depends on if there is more areas that need looking at whether that will be viable for you going forwards
@@usuallyfixingtinkering i believe its only the rear quarters, i have someone who can weld mine, ive seen ebay sills for likr £80 a pair,
quality bodywork will be expensive, that sounds like a good deal for the panels
@@usuallyfixingtinkering 15,000 miles with very little gone wrong , and they are brilliant cars
Typical ford with rust in the normal places I would have a ka sport again if not a focus or MK4 fiesta doesn't matter wat ford they all rust would never have a MK2 focus more electronic problems which stops them running I've not been watching u tube the last few weeks been bissy and not been well yet again I don't need to see the pictures 😂🤣
This is more of an awareness video for those who arn't "in the know" with MK1 Focuses, which is most people who are discovering how expensive they are.
@@usuallyfixingtinkering I can see your point to people who don't realize how much rust and how expensive it is to repair them but to be honest I've welded a good few focus but never been round the front of them ok the bottom of the wings I've done but nothing else at the front of them to be honest only thing I've not got the time for is the spraying as it all ways never looks the way I like it to but maybe that's just me I'm fussy with anything I do as I like to do the best job I can but with not having the fulk equipment and working shop it's not going to be 🤣😂
i bought my focus 1.8 ( 04 zetec)... in march 2023..... it was dirty but looked ok... owner said it was her sons from new and took it to spain... the sunny part... but after a few years he wasnt using it as much... so he sold it back to his parents... they used it a bit over the next 4 years... but decided to sell it... i was lucky... it went through its MOT with no advisories no rust ...anywhere...ive even been in the MOT pit to look....its great... 20yrs old... im gunna look after her... shes called nickel.....its my profile pic... love your channel... hopefully meet some time at a focus or ford meet...
That is great news, later cars are much better put together and you will get less bodywork issues as long as it's kept ontop of.
24 yrs old brothe r....and still rock solid. Ususal blebs but nothing to worry about and currently on 132k. Cracking vid as usual andy 👌
cheers buddy and really nice to hear!
In my case, I had bad enough (I think I sent for you pictures while ago), whole sill was replaced, so yeah, I agree rusting is really bad for mk1. Unless you have garage probably all of them will affected.
there are rare examples where this is not the case but 99% will suffer from corrosion in at least all these areas
I work in a bodyshop and the 2002/2003;cars were rusting when 6 or 7 yrs old the doors were bad for this the sealer on the inside used to fall off the last of the line seem better my 54 plate I waxoiled the sills and the rear seat belt mounting area when it was 10yrs old it's doing ok no rust as yet
That adds to my suspicion these cars were poorly put together for some reason during the cars mid-life, later cars do seem very well put together!
23:00 you missed the most worked over bit of the Nova. 😂 👋 from the owner.
sorry i didn't come round to the front, I was moving quickly as my camera battery was almost dead!
Anyone know how many 1.8 petrol Ghia left on the road? I've got an ex-UK model in the Republic, and it's the love of my life. It was first registered in October 04, and for its 20th birthday, I intend to lavish some TLC on it, and bring it back to its original condition. My son has a 1.6 Centenary (no. 49) which was, sadly, written off by an absolute tool in a SUV a few weeks ago. We're in negotiations to get it back and rebuild. There can't be many of them left, I'd have thought.
being a 1.8 it will be in a minority and being a ghia very much less than 1000, towards 500 without my stats on me!
@@usuallyfixingtinkering thanks for that! Ya, I figured they're getting rare. Great car, unbelievable fun.....
Nice to see my mates red Bluebird there
stunning example!
Shame these Rover 600s can't be used as uber s
they were very good as taxis back in the day!
Thanks for sharing. The 416GTI auto is mine and interestingly my name is Paul 😁 not sure who Paul the Rover man is?
Firstly you've confirmed he didn't have the car but what a coincidence your called Paul! Secondly I can't believe you've not heard of Paul the Rover man. He runs out rover channel on youtube, probably the biggest one! Your GTI auto is wonderful and very rare great to see it. My pleasure in sharing :)
As you said, I loved the variety at this show. Though there was definitely a lot of Rovers, French cars, Fords and solid tank Volvos. Loved seeing all of them.
@@adamjow8405 cheers buddy
The Lancia Zeta! So that is the car that made Ford come up with Zetec instead.
Correct! The Zeta name is an interest choice in the first instance, clearly the person who came up with he name didn't know much about cars!
Thanks for the card! (Burgundy mk3.5 fiesta) :)
no problem what a pleasure seeing this perfect example on display :)
