Jill Winger - Old Fashioned on Purpose
Jill Winger - Old Fashioned on Purpose
I'm Jill Winger, and, as young newlyweds, my husband Christian and I craved something more than the typical American existence. So we bought a tumbledown old farmhouse and subsequently stumbled upon the modern homesteading lifestyle.
We weren't born into a rural way of life, so we made ALL the mistakes at the beginning. But over the years, after a LOT of trial and error, we’ve figured out some pretty cool systems that allow us to grow a huge portion of our food AND create the simpler, more intentional life we’ve always wanted.
Through the weekly videos I share on my channel, I'll break down the more complex aspects of homesteading for you which will drastically shorten your learning curve as you look to cook from-scratch, grow amazing organic food, and live life on YOUR terms in every way possible.

Do you think that 1 cup of maple syrup could replace the honey?
Can you can fermented pickles to be shelf stable?
Dogs are awesome if working dogs Otherwise they’re bored Period They get destructive and aggressive Give them work
Thank you! I needed to hear these words today.
Moved from SW SD to SE NM 29 years ago. Can grow year round so my 1 city size lot with house has fed my family of 5 for many years. Recently started looking for some land here to grow and do more. Btw...driven through through Chugwater a few times on way home. All I remember is trees and a mural...lol. Gonna have to go that way again and refresh my memory.
We hope to move to Wyoming in a few years. We just can’t afford it yet land is so expensive from what we’ve found.
SE TN here and it is soo sticky and hot outside. Rain expected this week finally. While I love homesteading here, it's where I was born and raised, if it weren't for the relationships my kids have with our families we would try for the Carolinas. TN like you said is getting more and more expensive and over populated. My town used to have the small town feel and now it takes 30 plus minutes to get to the other side. I attended your talks at Rorys festival this year and last! Wasn't able to come say hi though, maybe next year if you're there again!
I was an hr west of Chatt and can’t wait to get back there but it was quite rural even the county seat was very small. I love Tenn and always will. The end. Lol My dad’s from NC. Very hot n sticky there in summers, trust me.
Thank you
I love the way you bring different perspectives, sometimes I think we are cut from the same fabric:)
NOT Lake County Oregon. However it can be done. Completely understand about creating the environment you want. We are cattle ranchers and the old school in Silver Lake Oregon (not where I live but close by) is where my kids got to socialize when they were young. Now all in their 20's. Game night was on Thursday night. The old gym was where they would play basketball, ride bike or jump rope. All in one building, it was a little wild. On the nights my husband was home from trucking, the kids would play there and come down to the cafe/bar where we were getting a burger and a drink. They would make milkshakes and wait for us peaking though the small hole in the wall to see into the bar.
My theory is….You pay for what you get and you get what you pay for. So you learn the land you have. ❤
Wonderful message I needed to hear this today.
My friends say we're all going to be sitting in a nursing home, and I'll still be talking about moving away to have more land. 😂 Yet, here I am. Excellent message!
🎯👍🏻 Excellent
Fantastic interview! I got an Aussie Shepard in Dec and would LOVE to train her to herd my sheep. I just had no idea how to start. Lots of good information in this episode.
I tried this recipe and it came out great. I am not buying bread from store anymore 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. By the way, this is my first baking attempt ever ...yeay
Please answer the questions folks have asked. Especially regarding usage on the face!! I want to share this but it’s not addressing the most problematic area. HOW do YOU treat the facial area since the annoying flies often congregate in the poor animal’s eyes. Is it ok to use a cloth gently around that area?? Does this help fight eye flies??
This year was the worst! I could not get anything to germinate, even using my tried-and-true methods. I finally gave up and I'm glad I did because we had a terrible drought as well as an unseasonably hot spring. I just told my husband, let's think of this as a message from the Lord telling us to take a break from gardening.
i'll take some pickles, hold the flies lol. JK, i have the same problem here in south east virginia.
Do you have a recipe like this for Greek yogurt?
Thank you. I needed to hear this today. I can not get my cucumbers to germinate, either, and my eggplants are way behind.
Jill, Mary’s KZread channel was hacked around July 9, 2024. All of her subscribers, affiliates, everything was wiped out. Of course, she is devastated, but knows that the Lord will take care of her family. I wanted to let you know of her difficulty and maybe you can reach out to Mary and lend her your support. Thank you for your channel and how you enrich so many lives.
I made the salt brine pickles which came out crunchy and yet kind of dull. Could I use these in the vinegar method to pump up the flavor? Second Q: could the refrig vinegar pickles be further canned via a water bath method for long term storage? Advice is welcome.😎
Can I just tap a tree and make it with that sugar? Haven’t learned to do this yet but the trick is to do it without spreading disease
Super excited to try this,, thank you for sharing
I have tried so many other sourdough recipes and I keep coming back to yours. I like your schedule-it just works for me too. I do use rice flour in my banetton basket - it is finer and prevents me from over flouring. One question-does your dough ever dry out during the overnight rise?😅
I watch her too. Lovely ladies
Get out! Are you in my home? Freaked me out, in a good way! Yay I’m a homesteader
I think this would be fantastic as a thickener. Sometimes your sauce is a bit loose but tomato would be a good flavor, or you made a mac and cheese and you want to turn it into more of a tex mex mac and cheese just add a bit of tomato powder.
SD thanks!
TMI really
At 119 degrees? Lost my entire garden. BUT ! I started seeds in the house a couple weeks ago, and when hell is over we will replant! Keeping the watering, for my worms❤️
👍♥️
I took a year off planting my annual garden. I have a few things in containers for fresh eating but I’ve been putting so much food up the last few years that it seemed a good time to take a break. However, I find I’m still weeding the unplanted gardens to keep them from getting covered over with weeds 🤦♀️ oddly, we are having a good amount of rain this year. We’ll probably end up with a drought next year when I plant again!
I know this is a few years back but I just finished listening to your interview on HOA and I thought "I actually like this gal" I tend to shy away from even calling myself a "homesteader". I am not enamoured with the trend that has taken root. I love my life and lifestyle. Granted I am a few more years into this lifestyle than the 30 somethings that are now taking over the social media platforms. I grew up on a farm and tend to consider what we do as "farming" (now homesteading). My dad was a farmer, I don't mind calling myself a farmer. I like someone that goes against the grain and shows grit and won't pull punches, as well as the un"romantic" side of this life.
I asked my vet if he knew anything about chickens, his answer was “I know how to eat them!”😂😂.
Thank god they had time to play in a mud puddle...the memory those kids are gonna have money could never buy. Good job mom.
My squash is not germinating either. No bees this year, except one bumblebee. It truly worries me. I’m in northern NY, Zone 4a, Redfield. As usual, loving your solo podcasts. You’re my friend in Wyoming, LOL. Truly love you and the way you talk about things important to me or we have in common. God Bless You, Jill.
I love your tips, I need automatic watering! My new garden strategies are: tight/narrow rows to avoid the expense of straw for mulch and decrease opportunities for weeds to grow, also planting the tall crops to shade other crops( have cucumbers growing up tall sunflowers) that also shade the potatoes from the hot sun, also I am free from guilt for not processing or giving away every scrap of unused produce. The garden is for me, I can do whatever I want with it! I have found that even giving produce to friends and family requires additional time and work, and sometimes it’s just not worth it.
In the process of making this bread and pretty excited! 🤍
I love the zone tip! Val C ❤👍
Is it a must to remove seeds?
The best way to freeze tomatoes is to remove the gunk on the inside.
I love this episode! We are moving to East Tennessee near the smoky mountains to start homesteading and the first animal we are going to get is a dog! We plan to utilize them on the homestead mostly for safety. There are bears near the property and we are going to get elkhounds to help protect livestock. These dogs are known for hunting big game- they make the game stop on their tracks. It’s such a cool instinct!
You are amazing and really made me think on how do my garden chores. I know I must get my veggie garden setup with a watering system of some kind. Thanks so much for the insights.
I would have to look at eggs but it looks like you had damaged is from air sac
I’m lol-because I’m the zone girl master, lol!!! I see I’m in good company!!
Love the zone idea. Going to try it!
Maybe weigh the salt?
I was listening while in kitchen and had to come check if JOHNY CASH was still alive 😂 cool video 🤙
SUCH AMAZING HELPFUL TIPS!!!
