I (and my brother) got the NES bundled with Ice Climber. I never played Zelda games. But I liked Battle of Olympus quite a lot. To this day I get nostalgic feelings when reading "Phrygia", "Attica", "Peloponnes" and such. Long ago I made a compilation vid of the NES games I played back then. (Just search for NES if interested.) I envy you for having attained all the good stuff in life ... a sustainable career, a loving partner, a place to grow roots at, and a childhood nostalgia lair.

Hello Metatron! Have you ever played the regular Might and Magic? I stumbled on part 2 at the video library of the townI lifed at that time. It was the SNES version. As I only knew such games for machines like Amiga or the PC I was very interested in that game, as I had no Amiga or PC at that time. So I borrowed it over the weekend. And mand was I bad. I think I didn'teven manage to accomplish a single quest. You could walk arround like in games like "D&D: Eye of the Beholder" but there was still a lot of text. But what I liked most was that every area had it's own music and I think the music was pretty good and was spot on for every situation and place. So even if I su**ed in that game I kept trying it over and over again. Years later I found out it was considered to be a difficult game, to begin with. You got punished for every mistake you did, pretty fast. 😂 Can't say I ever had so much fun with a game I wasn't good in playing.

When you said that overlay is probably not animated because it is a PNG ... Did you know what PNG actually offers an animated subformat? It overcomes GIFs 256-color depth shortcoming.

*Outrageous again, YT deleted my very useful, totally harmless comment!* I will try again with ridiculous self-censoring. ... I did something in my webcammed videos that I might be the pioneer of, because to this day I have not seen anyone else do it: Because I primarily care about presenting the subject footage, I always ran my webcam overlay with reduced opacity so that the footage underneath could be seen. The webcam image is just me talking into the camera anyway, so it is of lesser importance, and with reduced opacity it was still visible well enough. I also doubled down on this approach and added an erase mask so that the irrelevant webcam background would be subtracted. Examples: Terraria content. The only possible downside but which depends on hardware means available is that encoding and data rate efficiency might drop a bit with such translucency effects. (But there are also people who simply use green screen, leaving only their persona visible as a crisp cutout.)

Made a channel just to comment. My first memories are playing Atari at a babysitters house. My parents bought one NES when I was about 3, but ended up giving it to my grandpa so he could play Zelda, and we got another maybe a year later. I ended up getting grandpa's NES back when I was in my early 20s and he had developed carpal tunnel from playing it. As a small child with an NES, I of course liked Mario and Duck Hunt and Mickey, but I was particularly fascinated with Chess Master for unknown reasons. Later, we got a SNES and PS1. Most of my adolescent memories are being alone in my room, absorbed in the Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Tales, and Mana games. Started PC/MMO gaming after, and went to friends' houses to play Halo and Smash and Guilty Gear. And this isn't even getting into the many many hours/years of rhythm games. It's not an exaggeration to say that I spent my formative years gaming (and still do game regularly), for better and worse. I am told a lot that I think like a computer, Im too literal and detail oriented, and I dont have a lot of patience for people. I think this is directly related to spending so much time min/maxing, analyzing rules, and only participating in hobbies that had very clear and consistent action-reward relationships. I later realized how much I missed out on relating to the real world because I was too busy raiding with my guilds lol. Love your content. You had me hooked when the first Metatron video I clicked on started mouthing off at Ubisoft for absolutely defacing the HOMM series after 3. You get em!

I'll be buying this some time. Just for save states(built-in cheats are a bonus). The games we fondly remember, are complete fake challenge bullshit. Like Donkey Kong County 1. I remember it solely for the first world & the music. It was a good time in the first few stages. Then I get to the first Minecart level, then World 4, which I never did as a kid. Oh, and the game's own Saving sucks, because you have to keep fighting the boss of the previous world, to get to the next. Then there's freakin' Super Mario World. To think I used to NOT like modern Mario being easier. I take that back. These devs back in the day DIDN'T expect us to beat their games.

Wow you know at our age I think the nostalgia trip is cathartic. I definitely indulged in the description of your version of memory lane. I actually realized from this video my own take on gaming. Short version, I'm not quite so attached to my own systems or games but rather how games work in general and what types of dedication it takes their players to master them. Long version: I think it's because I started out just experiencing the systems my friends and family had. I had a cousin with the Famicom, very pretty system btw much prettier than the international machine. And naturally without understanding Japanese the games were all bootleg. I got into Contra, Duck Hunt and of course Mario. I was terrible at all of it though and the NTSC controller didn't do me any favors at all when I played at my friends' houses. I ended up enjoying watching them get better at the games. Eventually I was given a Super Nintendo which I did love the Mario games, F-Zero, Final Fantasy, Zelda and so on but I was also happy my friends got Sega because it let me play the Sonic games and out there games like Earthworm Jim and Ren & Stimpy. I personally only ended up finishing some of these games in college, mostly going off the memories I had of them finishing the games. This trend of I'd get a system and hope my friends get the other ones also continued all the way to college so I ended up playing all of them even going backwards to the Atari which was an experience for sure. But it also meant what I ended up wanting was more experiences rather than to personally perfect my gameplay on any single one. Btw the machine you had we call Sega 16-bit, the Genesis looked a little different though looking at the information today it seems Genesis was always 16-bit? Either way the Genesis didn't have 16-bit etched onto the console. I still remember my friends that had the 16-bit version bragging so much about it. Then Sega 32x came out. Your description about how we selected games is also very apt. I was able to see myself doing exactly what you said, go to the store, look at the coolest looking box art and that's the one you pick up. Step two flip the box around for those screenshots. If the box passed both checkpoints it's probably a buy, parents willing. You know gaming really does do so much for a child's development. It's incredible to know that one of youtube's greatest historical analysts got started because of games related to the subject. I know you don't usually see eye to eye with MatPat but his idea of tangential learning through games is exactly this and I think many boys end up finding their passions through the games they play. It's something so easy for us to get into.

There were also utility programs to "park" hard disks, in those days. To make sure that needle does not damage the hard drive if computer gets moved. Not sure if the unit you have comes with a hard drive, but my 1986 PC-XT had one (same 8088 CPU, but 640KB RAM and 30MB HDD). So you run "park.exe", and after that, you turn off PC using switch.
