what if the page is colord
So, what if I want to color the artwork traditionally. Will I need to print that cleaned up black and white scan first, color it and then rescan it? It seems unpractical to say the least. Thanks for the video.

Totally dig this video. Btw, I noticed that the swatches you are using are named ‘CK ..PS True’? Being that clip studio is not CMYK friendly, i take it that you are using those swatches so that you are using CMYK print friendly colors. Can you share those swatches with me? FYI, I am a student of your classes and already purchased all 3 courses. :)
How do you come up with a flat/base color? is it the local color slightly desaturated.
Depends on what you’re going for with the final look of your page. The most consistent aspect of my base colors is that they’re darker, and then I add highlights later. Though, I’ve seen other colorists start out light and add shadows.
if working on bitmaps why not use wand + all layers + contiguous then expand selection, fill gaps under lineart with lasso or bucket

lol I always do this, work in a lower res then upscale when exporting :P mostly on big media where the banners are 5 meters long, I work them at 50cm

Did you make a copy of your line art?
I always keep a copy of my line art as a selection layer (which is the equivalent to an Alpha Layer in Photoshop)

I like the way the more vibrant colors in the foreground play off the muted blues in the background...it really makes for a dynamic contrast and striking image...well done, sir.
That's very helpful and will save me a lot of time digitally wrestling everything to make it convert to CMYK correctly...

I think you misspoke at 2:04. Make sure contiguous is turned ON. Thought I was going nuts for a minute.
Good catch. That’s been up awhile now and you’re the first to say anything. Contiguous selects similar pixels that are touching. If it’s off it’ll select all similar pixels throughout the piece.

Is there a way to make the lines look more crisp and less pixelated?
If your scan is at a high enough resolution your lines won't look pixelate. If you're working at print size I would recommend a resolution of 450ppi to 600ppi. If you're working at larger than print size you can go as low as 300 ppi and still be safe. It'll always look pixelated when you zoom in, but that won't be visible in print.

Hi. Your video is very helpful! You mentioned that you work in Adobe RGB and then it is converted to CMYK. Please explain why do you do that? I'm under the impression I should work in CMYK SWOP 2 for print. Thanks!
Only the final print file needs to be in CMYK, but you don’t have to work in CMYK. I switched to working in RGB because I found my colors and glows came out richer. It also gives you better control over ink density. Ultimately though, it comes down to a personal preference.

I am missing something here about flattening. What does flattening do? I always see people colouring in drawings with a layer, so I am not understanding this. Any help?
The term is actually "flatting". It's just the process of laying down flat colors that you can easily select later during the coloring process.

Sometimes artists will post their own work that is high enough resolution to color, so you can hunt DeviantArt and Social media for that. Also, you can politely ask your favorite artists for line art. Sometimes they'll be willing to send you some. The channel turns black automatically even though my palette is set to the default. Any idea why?
You mean the new alpha channel you create (the one you'll paste the line art into)? Double click on the alpha channel in the channels palette to bring up the "Channel Options" dialogue box and make sure you have it set to "Selected Areas".

I hate to keep bugging you... when I paste my line art into the new channel, it doesn't line up with the colours I've got in my layers. It's off a bit and I have to move it manually, which I hate doing since I'm not 100% sure it's exactly where it needs to be.

+G Dragon1 I've never used gimp, so I don't know. Photoshop is the industry standard, so the tutorials you'll find from most of us pros will likely be for photoshop.
GREAT VID!! You give so many good points to consider. It would be more work but it would be magnificent is if you actually did what you're saying and then show the difference. That would have made this video perfect but I'm just loving what you're saying and wishing to see the difference.
At 3:03 how did you bring your lines back after filling in the individual boxes to the reddish color? I think you are hitting a hotkey and I do not know which one it is.
I'm not sure if I mention it in this video, but I use a custom Action that I have programmed to an F key. without an action you just go to the Channels palette and turn on the eyeball of your line art channel. It only saves me seconds of time, but when I have to repeatedly turn on my line art channel having an action makes a difference. If you would like to create your own actions, I have a short video on the bare bones basics here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lp5rpcyLftbFY8o.html When you create an action to turn on your line art start a new action, assign it an function key (F key), hit "record", then in the channel palette click the eyeball on the line art channel so that its on, then hit the stop button in the Actions palette. Your new action should only have one step to it (Show channel "channel name"). You'll want to be certain you name your line art channel the exact same thing every time in order for this action to work. I always name mine "LineArt". I hope that helps.

Adjusting the levels in RGB/CYMK then thresholding does the same thing without having to delete channels since thresholding gets rid of all color below 50% grey value. Otherwise, very good instruction!
Yep, you could absolutely do it that way. I personally don't like thresholding in RGB or CMYK color mode because I find that chews up the blacks more and takes a lot more fiddling in levels than if you're just working with grays. However, I no longer use the method in this video either. Here's how I approach this now, it gives me much better results and is a lot easier imo: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h39mybinZsWWZZc.html
