There´s not many golf courses around you because Costa de Prata its usualy very windy, there is one though at "Praia D´el Rei", between praia do Baleal e Foz do Arelho.

Thanks for watching @mariomarques4247 and I’ve played Praia D’el Rei as well as West Cliffs. There are two (maybe three) others right in the same area. Maybe wind has something to do with it, but it seems to me some of the most expensive golf courses to play in the world are on coasts that get a lot of wind (Pebble Beach, St Andrews, Bandon Dunes). I’d love just one or two more courses between Praia D’el Rei and Aviero :)

Prices: "the Silver Coast still remains relatively affordable". Is that an euphemism? The Silver Coast is dirt cheap! Go check prices in Lourinhã, Bombarral, etc. Or even near the beach in one of the many non-touristy villages facing the ocean.

It's interesting that you consider the weather as a pro, the Portuguese tend to see the silver coast as cold, windy and rainy. Also, the Silver Coast is a foreigners' concept, the Portuguese don't really use that definition. There is something that we call "Região Oeste" which corresponds roughly to the lower half of the Silver Coast (Mafra, Torres Vedras, Caldas da Rainha, Leiria), and that's the part that we consider to be cold, windy and rainy. The whole area is chock-a-block with wind turbines, so it is windy for sure.

  • @TheUnretirees

Thanks @UbuTube and the weather, for us, is a pro. We lived for a long time in San Francisco and Oakland, and the weather in Nazaré is very similar (including the wind). Thanks for the “Região Oeste” and we’ll add that to our vocabulary!

I wonder if I missed something. I lived there 20 years ago, and I couldn't wait to leave. I really believe that Portugal hides a lot of it's crime statistics. I watch and read the news from Portugal, and it tells a different tell. I'm not saying this to be negative- I'm saying this to be honest. Please do not let your guard down because crime is absolutely everywhere. Even Portugal. The US has become such a complicated place to live, so I can understand people wanting to leave. I am one of those people. We must be mindful of the locals, who have much lower salaries and who are having problems finding housing because they are being priced out. Congratulations to the both of you. I'm sure you've worked very hard and you deserve a good quality of life. Parabens!

Thanks for watching @teddydavis2339 and sorry your experience twenty years ago wasn’t great. Ours has been and while I agree that one always needs to be aware of their surroundings, Portugal - at least for the last several years - continues to be rated very highly in global safety studies and we have never felt unsafe here. We appreciate your words of caution, however.

Yep, that’s true @donnal7414 and at the moment it’s about $1.07 for €1, but that changes over time. When we moved the bulk of funds over to buy our home in Sep/Oct 2022, there were a few magical weeks where the dollar was stronger than the Euro, so it was great for us. But that was an unusual few weeks.

I did everything myself in 2019. I did this before I left the US so I had the visa when I arrived. The process was a little tedious but not difficult. When I arrived in Portugal, I picked up my NIF, etc. during the first four months I was in Portugal. My issue was dealing with lies from people especially in the real estate business in Portugal. I have been traveling the world for the last couple of years because dealing with liers is down right boring. Hope others don't have the same experience. Only go with the top international RE agencies unless you now many people who have used a local agency successfully.

  • @TheUnretirees

Thanks for watching @user-cn5ri5 and now they require the NIF as part of the visa process. It is still possible to get a NIF without going thru a third party like Bordr but you need to get one while you are visiting Portugal and have an address in Portugal (or have a friend who will be your representative and who has an address in Portugal). Sorry to hear of your troubles with the real estate people. We had such a good experience with ours, but I’m sure there are plenty of shady people. Best of luck in your travels!

Thanks for the details. Also consider your heritage. Maybe you qualify for a Euro passport. Granddad from euro? I think you need longer to first figure out a region and then figure out a town. Only then start looking at places. No point in falling for a house in a location that it turns out later you hate. The house better be great because you won't be leaving it. You would need way more time for France/Italy since they have so many such distinct regions. You really do need to find a region, find a town and only then start looing for a house. So many many weeks needed. Also summer vs fall. Are you ready for the heat of the summer, the cold of the winter? How much for electrical prices during summer days when you want A/C? Many of the villages around Lake Como are deserted in the winter. Your dream lake front place in July might be an abandoned town for months of the winter. Strong yes on manual transmission in cars. You will be paying more across Europe to rent cars if you can only handle automatic. If your older think of the nearest medical care. That remote cottage that looks across a valley is very pretty until you need an ambulance and its 90 min's away so your three hours from a hospital. Repair work needed? Don't bring USA presumptions on time and cost. Expect everyone in town to know that yanks bought the Sainz family place and so you will be the talk of the town for the next month. Everyone will be looking for history and motive. Chapter marks please.

Thanks for watching @nikij.6058 and a lot of people do rent for a year or more before buying (if they buy at all). We don’t regret buying as we did because rates were still low, exchange rates were attractive, and we had firmly decided on an area to live. It also allowed us to rent it out before we moved so we didn’t face the double rent situation. But most people rent to start for sure.

Good information. We spent about $40k to move and get set up in PT. We left a year later and got back about 50% of that by selling the car, furniture, and getting our rental deposit back. We try to think of the remaining $20k as the price of a year-long vacation in Europe. Even though we didn't like living in Portugal, we're glad we tried. We're especially glad we didn't buy a home in PT and kept our US home, cars, etc. We came back to the states, unlocked the front door and we were home! If you have the means to try, go for it but keep in mind that over 50% of expats leave within the first year and about 80% leave before five years. It isn't for most of us. We're proof. We didn't like it at all (after the first month or so).

And on the medical concierge, yes we are really happy with Serenity. Best of luck on your move!

All in all a pretty accurate cost assessment. We're in the process of moving to Portugal from the southwest US so our travel costs have been a lot more but the rest of our expenses have been in line with yours. We purchased a house that we closed on 8 months ago and fortunately it was furnished so at least we have something to start with. Our house in Portugal is much smaller than our house in the US so nearly everything will be sold. Furniture is much more expensive in Portugal and we'll be in a village and not a city so we need a car. Importing a car from the US can have issues. The car has to be modified to meet their specs and sometimes it never passes inspection and all of this takes a very long time. Save yourself the trouble and buy a car in Portugal unless you're already coming from the EU and be prepared for the cost. Thanks for the video, I learned a few things!

  • @TheUnretirees

Thanks for watching @wallywal6139 and good luck on the rest of your move! Yes, shipping a car is not for the faint of heart for sure. Even cars purchased in Spain need modifications and money! We didn’t do it and unless you have an emotional attachment to a car, it’s likely best to sell it in the home country and buy something here, if you need it. Thanks for the added info!

  • @RushmoorFizzbomb
    @RushmoorFizzbomb8 күн бұрын

In regards importing a car to Portugal, you can obtain a vat and IMT(car duty) exemption certificate when you have your interview to get your Visa. The exemption applies to household goods including one vehicle per person that must have been owned and registered in the originating country of the applicant for a minimum period of possibly 6 or 12 months prior to importation. You will have to check. Different time periods are stated on different sources. The process is quite complex and it probably would be best to talk to ACP ( equivalent of AAA or AA) in Portugal. There is a 5 year tapered VAT clawback if you sell your car within this period. After 5 years you are free entirely to sell without vat liability.

Nice informative video! Why NYC? Are you glad you lived in NYC for the time you were there? Always thought a year in the city is a great experience! Thanks again for watching @mindfulmildlifetravel and we had always wanted to live in NYC so when our youngest went off to college we made it happen. We loved living there most of the time, but during the pandemic it was a tougher place to live while paying very high rents. It was a great experience though. In terms of care for a pet when we travel, there is a company called Trusted Housesitters who match people who need pet sitters with people who want to be pet sitters. There is a fee to join this service, but between the pet sitters and the pet owners, there is no cost. We've used it several times and usually the pet sitters are "travelers" and this works out great because it's free housing in exchange for pet care. For our yard / garden, if we were going to be gone for 4 weeks or longer, we'd have someone come in and mow the lawn and check the plants. But we have automatic sprinklers and drip irrigation (by the previous owner) and so if we're gone couple of weeks it cares for itself.

Thanks for watching @mindfulmidlifetravel. We put down 25% (some banks require 30% for non-residents). In terms of other closing costs, there are modest costs relating to the contract (hundreds of euros but not thousands) but the big one is there is a transfer tax that is challenging called the IMT. If you buy a €250,000 property, for example, the IMT is €10,400 and it needs to fully paid before the purchase is completed. So, 25-30% down plus this IMT are the real cash requirements.

We went from 3000 sq ft to 950 sq ft. We love it! As far as the sentimental stuff, we kept a few items. But not ALL of it. I only kept 1 or 2 of things from my grandmothers. For our photos, it took me quite a while but I scanned all of them. They are stored on an external hard drive and all of my kids each have a copy of them too. My most favorite that I like to look at are in cloud storage so I can access them from anywhere. The physical photos were given to my children and other family members. I also uploaded historical family photos onto Ancestry so others can also access them. We have just spent the past 8 months traveling all over this country. But now we have settled into the 950 sq ft near our elderly parents in order to provide care for them. It’s what works for us.

  • @TheUnretirees

Thanks for watching @RushmoorFizzbomb and on taxation - I assume the question is about AirBNB income taxation in Portugal. First, we’re not tax professionals. You can own an AirBNB personally or you can own it in a Portuguese business. We own ours personally, so you don’t get to deduct expenses directly. Instead, the government assumption is that your expenses are 65% of revenues and you are taxed at 28% of the remaining 35% (or just under 10% on gross revenues).

Thank you so much for this video. You are both a delight to watch and learn from. We are making our scouting trip in September to the Algarve. I was feeling overwhelmed but, your video has made me feel so much better about all of my concerns. Yes! I would love to see a deep-dive video about cost of living and...anything else you have to share about your Portugal experience!😊

Thanks for watching @cindib1596 . Everyday feels more “normal” here but it wasn’t that long ago that it all felt overwhelming to us, too. The Algarve is great, but - for us - a little too hot in the summer. But it is beautiful for sure. Until we do a cost of living video, you can check out sites like numbeo.com or expatica.com to check out comparisons! Thanks

We have grown adult children as well and are thinking of downsizing but then the question of grandchildren comes up. Thank goodness we didn’t sell our 5 bedroom 3 bath home. We now have one grand child and 3 more on the way. Glad we have the 5 bedroom home now. Plenty of room when they spend time with us. Looks like we will just set up a living will and give our home to the children. But for anyone who never has grandchildren this would be a great idea.

Thanks for watching @amyf. No doubt one of the toughest things in making a move like ours is the distance between you and family. Some families all live in the same town and see each other all the time, and a move like this would be challenging for them. That wasn’t our story so it works for us.

This sounds ok for someone who doesn’t have hobbies. My husband would not like to give up all his tools and workshed that he loves to potter about in. Decluttering down by 90% would never be achievable or even something we would choose to do. But I am definitely choosing to declutter alot of knicknacks and all the stuff we collected as memories of our kids growing up - passing that onto them!

I get that @jdxx59. If you’ve got a hobby that is important to you and has a lot of equipment, it would be difficult / impossible to do.

I’ve often thought of moving abroad but something holds me back. It’s my beautiful 5 acre property with a 50s brick home. It’s a perfect 1560 square feet and I’ve lived here for over 26 years. It’s with the city but with land at the very end of the road. It has several majestic old oak trees. I’m across the river from a National Wildlife Refuge. Birds of all species, deer and wild animals are everywhere. There is no need to travel to go camping in the wild as I experience this in my own yard and as I look out the 25 well placed windows in the home. So, here I will probably die as it’s home to me and my family. My son has never known any other place at age 26. I will continue to watch videos and will keep traveling even more once I retire, but for now this is my place. 🙂

If it’s perfect for you, then no need to change it. It sounds like paradise.
