    Really great episode, but very poorly timed. As my kids would say, learn to read the room.

    I an really glad you have done an episode on Saipan, be it a very short one. Here is why this battle is little known in Europe; you have done one 45 minute episode on Saipan but sixteen episodes on D-Day and the subsequent battles total about 12 hours of coverage. If people don't talk aboit something it will be forgotten.

    45 minutes is really too little time to talk of Saipan. Bill and Seth has three ( I think it is three) really good episodes on it- IMO some of the best they have done on any subject. And with Jon Parshall, who basically makes everything better.

    I think it fortunate that the Allies basically gave the Germans an impossible tactical/strategic problem set. Because their air and naval power gave them the ability to attack almost anywhere in Europe, the Germans had to defend everywhere and hence were always going to be relatively weak in most places. The rational course for the Germans after mid-43, with the setback at Kursk and the loss of Sicily, was to read the writing on the wall and sue for peace. But the Germans, had they been rational, would never have started the war in the first place.

    I went by motorbike from Paris to Arromanche via Mt Ormell and Falaise…..the year Obama was present. All the flags were flying from Mt Ormell onwards which I found impressive. The reenactors I found initially very uncomfortable, but I camped among them in the Municipal campsite at Arromanche, and then I realised it was a celebration of their liberation, and not in bad taste, but the reverse. I discovered Crépon and the Green Howards/Stan Hollis memorial, and was invited to a service a week later , by the Mayor. I was very impressed by the dignity and respect shown by the very many local people who attended.

    I have always wondered why no follow up was considered for Normandy. Getting ashore and getting a foothold is objective one. But did no one seriously consider what comes after? The more I read about the post-Normandy battle is a bit of an improvised plan, it would make sense to after an after plan for driving to Germany.

  • @steveholmes11
    @steveholmes116 күн бұрын

    I understand there was insufficient intelligence to plot 2 weeks breakout fighting after the beaches. The actual follow-up seems pretty successful. * Massive aerial interdiction, putting an end to German rail capacity. * Constant enemy contact, sucking in reserves for piecemeal destruction. * Sufficient land behind to bring up supplies reserves replacements and all the gubbins of modern war fighting.

    My name is Stephen Hardy from Boston, Massachusetts. I have been a long time listener, but not any more. Not after Mr. Murray's asinine impersonation of what he believes is an American accent. I understand that He thinks of himself as a humorist, but this is simple beyond acceptable taste. As for Mr. Holland, I am disappointed. I thought he was better than this.

    Regarding Soviet manpower. In 1945 only the Guards Armies were kept up to full strength, there were not enough for more. Meanwhile their production went down cause all available manpower was at the front. They would probably have solved that to some extent using the population of Eastern Europe.

    I’m much closer to the end of my run than the beginning and I have very few regrets. I found an excellent partner, had 3 great kids and a very fulfilling career. I would say that I am a little envious of flying a Spitfire over over Normandy, Malta, Arnhem etc. What a wonderful experience that would have been.

    The story of the evacuation of Dunkirk, to me, saved Great Britain. I'm not sure the British people or the politicians would have had what it took to fight on without its army. Getting those men back had to be a huge boost to the confidence of the British people and to the war effort....

    The live stuff sounds good to me, one thing that's very Male is heated AGREEMENTS, that's not a spelling mistake. They can go on for hours (as long as Mr over competitive doesn't join in!) no-one dominates the talk, if someone doesn't know something,as well as..or ,is not as aware of... You don't mock or exclude, let them agree as much as anyone,Well self policed Agreements educate, someone'll stop agreeing to explain..in a non hauty manor, that's the whole point and of course it's not an exclusively male past time but men tend not to express in a male environment and from a distance it may come over as an argument, so wot, it's a good old exchange of information where everyone leaves just that little bit richer.OR am I completely effing ga ga?
