Robert W. Eiser

Robert W. Eiser

California in the late 60's early 70's, falconry meets were held at campsites with good hawking within walking distance. The smell of fresh coffee and breakfast, hawking all morning, naps, hawking in the afternoon. Nightly gatherings, falconers selling their wares, the days hawking stories around campfires, and your birds staked out right next to you were an intimate part of it all and the reason you were all there. The experience....priceless. Truly defining moments in the history and development of North American Falconry.

Handsome Update: In the spring of our third season together, a passage female Kestrel would visit each morning while Handsome was weathering. From their reactions I knew it was time. Handsome now has a family, he and his young bride reside near our old hawking area not far from home. I see them from time to time, he is a great little bird and the boy could really fly, I miss him.

The moult offers a good time to tackle problems. Captive bred, chamber raised, parent fed birds are the worst. Shadow is a hard imprint, no fear, aggressive by nature, still gets that way if she spends nights in the mews. If she spends the night on the round perch in my office, she's golden. Try to fly in an area that is void of things for your bird to land, wide open spaces are good, no poles, no fenceposts, no buildings, no trees etc. To get the bird to take a pitch you might try flying in light wind for starters, cast him off the fist, as he goes up reward him for the effort, he'll soon figure it out i.e. going up means big reward. Have fun and keep him flying.

The new GXP is a monster size longing, 1487 grams this morning, more than a few behaviors to reshape but we'll get there, keeping her indoors at night on round perch is helping considerably, weathering area all day, enjoys a good shower and bath, don't we all.
