I think we camera aficionados have all known the trend, but it's really nice to see the data. The "Camera Sales by Manufacturer" graph was informative, but the iPhone Sales chart was staggering! (Is it just iPhones, or all smart phones?) Those iPhone cameras keep getting better and I use my iPhone professionally to do real estate walk-through videos, though I still use a pro camera for the stills and the high-end videos. But just yesterday I saw a cicada molting. I immediately took some pics with my iPhone but then ran in the house and grabbed my S5II. The iPhone pics were nice but could have never stood up to the editing I did in Lightroom and I was so happy with my S5II pics that I submitted one of them to a photo contest. As a Lumix guy, I respect Panasonic for staying in the race (even after Olympus sold out) and even adding full frame cameras, and continuing to improve their full product line. Stafford, you asked if camera companies will streamline their products like Apple did with PC's under Steve Jobs, but I'm not sure that will happen because camera markets are a bit more diverse. But who knows? From your chart, it looks like Panasonic sold about a million bodies in 2023. If the average price is $2,000 that is still $2B. And then there is the lens market! So even a bottom-feeder like Panasonic has reason to stay in the race. It DOES look like it is leveling out and hopefully manufacturers will continue to innovate and add value to keep sales going for those of us who still are willing to pay for a camera with a larger sensor than an iPhone. Smart phones will also continue to improve but I think there will always be a difference due to sensor size and limited lens choices.

Great video and subject. Those are shocking numbers. It seems the manufacturers have shifted to cater more to the pros than the serious amateurs like me. I would love to have a new z full frame camera but the cost is not realistic for me. The crop sensor options are few at least for now which makes me think they're not focused on the beginner/amateur market. I would love an affordable upgrade of my z50 but don't see it coming anytime soon. The smartphone offers incredible convenience and that's enough for a lot of folks. I still love getting the settings right, taking the shot and printing a worthy photo. I'm starting to feel like a dinosaur.

I have an old Nikon Coolpix P7100. It's really old and has a CCD censor but it shoots raw and takes fantastic images. I also have a Sony ZV1, which is geared toward video but it takes pretty good still images. My only other pocketable camera is the Nikon Coolpix A but it has a fixed lens but it is capable of making beautiful images. Older P&S cameras are still quite good.

The iPhone didn’t just put a dent in point & shoot camera sales; it also took a swing at pro cameras. It’s just so convenient to snap a great photo or shoot an amazing video with your phone. I think the camera makers have to face the facts, your smartphone is always with you, while using a standalone camera requires some planning and deliberation to use which most folks just aren't going to do.

Apparently P&S cameras are having a renewal with the younger kids, at least on eBay. We'll see if that translates into anything over the next few years, but I think the cellphone has introduced photography to many and those that grow in the art will grow in terms of the tools they use. Plus there is a rumor the P1000's replacement is coming next along with the Z50ii and perhaps the Z9ii or a Z90.

I have a P1000 and enjoy it on a sturdy tripod with a fluid pan head. It's just too bulky to hike with so for that I carry a Canon Sx60HS. The Canon's internal battery is failing so it needs to have quick battery swaps - otherwise it looses all it's settings including date/time. Been thinking of replacing it with a P950 while they're still available.

I kinda want to see a PnS with features like sensor shift hi res mode or dual readout like panasonic g9ii. PnS tends to also have leaf shutter so we can sync flash at all shutter speed and the less shallow depth of field is useful in my case of photography. I hope they kept innovating even though it means they'll only release more expensive camera in the future.

Thank you for your fantastic videos and your unwavering passion for superzoom cameras! I've been doing nature photography for the past four years. It all started with a small Sony camera (I can't recall the exact model) that had 40x zoom - that's when my love for superzooms ignited. I quickly upgraded to a Panasonic FZ80 with its impressive 60x zoom, but it still wasn't enough. Then came the game-changers: the Nikon P950 and P1000. These cameras allowed me to capture shots I could never achieve with my previous gear. It's bittersweet that we won't see these cameras updated with the latest processors. I'd gladly pay more for improved autofocus and buffer performance, akin to the Z series. Unfortunately, the writing was on the wall as superzoom after superzoom got discontinued without updates. This year, I made the leap to mirrorless cameras (specifically the Canon R10 with an 800mm f/11 lens) as my go-to setup. The technology is superior, but it's bulkier and heavier compared to the convenience of my P950 or P1000. Despite the industry moving on, I believe the superzoom segment still holds untapped potential. For those of us who don't want to drop $20,000 on a telephoto lens, these cameras remain invaluable.

I bought a P1000 a few years ago and even then it was hard to find, the P950 was just releasing and had very similar performance in a significantly smaller and lighter platform. I understand and respect that. However, even back then I thought the P1000 was very special and there may never be another camera quite like it. I think superzooms are the perfect niche for point and shoot, and I still consider getting myself a little A1000 or equivalent at some point.

Hey bud. Thanks for the content keep it up In a world were point and shoots aren't dead, and if we could get a Nikon P950mII (p960?)O my wishlist would include USBC charging, UHSII cards for all the 4k120 or FHD240 video. For stills, bigger buffer and 2024 level autofocus. Same sensor size would be fine but mabe as 5years have passed we get faster readout and quicker processor in the body. Maybe the menus wouldn't lock up during buffer clear, and maybe I'd get more than 7 shot bursts. Then ideally an OVF and Screen update. Touchscreen for focussing and menus would be nice but not a deal breaker. Until then I'll keep the p950 until it dies. Have taken some of my best wildlife shots with it.

I just got back into biking, just casual biking along country back roads. Every now and then I stop to take a photo, be it landscapes, buildings, wildlife, birds. Admittedly it's very easy to pull out the phone to take a landscape or building photo. But today, for instance, when I stopped for a water break, I spotted a palm Warbler flitting around about 35, 40 feet away. I pulled my Nikon B700 from my bike bag and got some nice close up shots of it. A little further down the road I saw a pond covered in water lillies. Got the Nikon again, and got a nice photo of one isolated lilly among many lilly pads. Some miles further on, I saw some deer in the road ahead. I pulled an old Olympus SZ-10 out of my handlebar bag and again got some decent shots I wouldn't have been able to get with my phone. The bird at 1320mm, the lilly at 1100mm, the deer with the SZ-10 at 440mm. I also took some macros with the B700. Now, none of these photos will ever grace the cover of National Geographic, but in my opinion they look pretty decent, and are good enough to share on social media. What other type of camera can be so versatile and be as compact and it would need half a dozen lenses to capture the same sort of things? I know I'm not going to lug around various expensive lenses for the type of shooting I do. It's a real shame these cameras are disappearing , and when they're completely gone it will leave a substantial hole in common folk outdoor photography.

You should look into buying one of those clips-on tele-extenders advertised for phones on KZread,. you know, the ones professional photographers are buying so they can dump their pro gear (space for extreme sarcasm here). Just kidding but it would be interesting to publish the results, comparing one of those to some of your pro gear results just to make the point and another video. Has the Lumix FZ1000 Mk 2 been discontinued? I have the Leica version and it's a very good travel camera. If you use the I-Zoom feature in the menu it will extend to 800mm's from 25mm's and still provide good results with its one-inch sensor.

Hi Stafford, I thought for a long time that most of the point and shoots are dead. Interestingly, at one time I had both the P950 and RX10 as well as my SONY mirrorless. In the end I dumped the RX10 because the zoom at 600mm competed with my SONY A74 which gave much better results. The RX10 gave me no extra capability The P950 gave me a reach that the RX10 could not neither could the SONYs and I use it to complement my SONY 200-600 mm telephoto. The extreme superzoom bridge cameras should be the only survivors because they occupy a niche which nothing else can.

Thank you for the video. I guess sony hx99 is the only option for now if someone want to get a new point and shoot super zoom camera. I bought a zs80 a few month ago though, since some videos mentioned the sony is too small that is not comfortable to hold it and easy to trigger button by mistake. I hope these manufactures would make more cameras like these, or just gave zs200 a tilt screen.

I am on the hunt for a used P950, I live near a river so when I'm out walking my dog I see eagles, pelicans and a few duck varieties - an holding a monocular against my smartphone camera isn't cutting it!

A very challenging shoot. Would there have been any point to trying a very small, portable blind or was that not an option if this was in a state or national park? Just for laughs, maybe a small square screen painted to look like you were shooting out of a car. It would be a great story if it worked. Good to see you're still doing some MFT shooting. It looked like you were using the OM System 150-600mm zoom. How do you like it?

Bruce good to hear from you. So yea, the small blind would be tough as you have to travel to get to them and the places are so big that you really have to locate them with scopes or driving miles. A smaller place where you know their given paths then the small portable blind would be the ticket. So the 150-600 is nice, It is heavy for sure more heavy than the 150-600 contemporary on the canon cameras. Sharpness, focus, IS is all there. The only drawback is the size and expense. I think OLMPUS took at heart to add another 1K in expenses to the lenses for reselling. I know it is a sigma sport with revamped internals as well. Its overall a good lenses and the King for MFT if you are serious about birding or wildlife. Most people with MFT will go with the 100-400 lenses but for me it is the ticket.

Loved the background when birds were perched on the posts! The Canada Geese were fun to watch. Nice vehicle camera mount! Thanks as always for your post, Stafford! I enjoy each and every one of them, especially the bird photography and videography...

Great idea. The car makes a good blind, and that custom support for your camera works well I see. Amazing photography & videography, as usual.
