Frank's natural extroversion was, in his early performing years, belied by an affected stage shyness that helped make him so ineffably charming and attractive to bobbysoxers separated from their significant others in the military service. The mania whipped up by the largely female audiences that came out in droves to see the young crooner can only be compared to the screaming girls who later clamored for Elvis Presley and The Beatles. As Frank recalled of his popularity in these times,"[it] was the war years and there was a great loneliness, and I was the boy in every corner drugstore, the boy who'd gone drafted to the war. That's all."

Frank was only 27 then. His voice was purer then. His style of singing changed over the next few decades which were his prime years. His best years were about 10 years after this when he had developed his unique style and still had a beautiful vocal range.

When Sinatra recorded this song in 1953 he definitely did not have the world on a string. His recent recordings had been flops and his career was tanking. His label suggested a different backup band and a new, little known arranger named Nelson Riddle. Frank was at first resistant, but things were going so badly for him that he had to relent. This recording was the first Sinatra-Riddle collaboration, and it was a runaway chart topper.

A lovely composition. The song was composed by Jerome Kern & the lyrics were penned by Oscar Hammerstein II. So lovely; so innocent, so sweet. A standard jazz tune in which nobody sings and emotes better than Franky Sinatra. ❤

Such an iconic pairing: that great voice of Sinatra in his prime, and Nelson Riddle’s superb orchestra behind and out in front. A classic in every way.
