This channel has my hobbies of model building in plastic, paper, stick and tissue, kits, scratch, painting etc. Mostly aircraft with lots of drag and rigging! It may also have some of my other hobby...trying to save money on car repair by "doing it myself" so I can spend that money on more paper, balsa and plastic...Enjoy!

Masking tape for curves works great for scribing, it's also significantly thicker than the regular tape which makes it great as a guide.
Great idea...it will probably be better than my Tamyia tape too. Thanks for the info! -Dan
Brilliant idea with the petal spinner formation. so beautiful. will definitely be using this idea to form mine. thank you!
Thanks, Neil. I got it on the downloads tab of Paper Modelers. Worked like a charm! -Dan
I'm also amazed and definitely will try this.
@@stepanjindra1477 Hi Stepan...it's super easy and looks nicer than super bright silver paint in most cases. Give it a go! -Dan
Did I miss that part, or did you forget to bleed those brake cylinders before you put the wheels back on? There's a bunch of air in there until you open the bleeder and push out the air with the brake pedal. That would keep your brakes from stopping well, and the pedal would be spongy.
Thanks Edward...I did actually bleed all the brakes. Thank you for letting me know!
It just looks better and better.
Very very nice. Excellent modelling and with your painting and card construction skills it is very hard to tell it’s cardboard. Have subscribed, never done a card model before as I’m a figure sculptor and painter but may give it a go!
Nice, HistorexT and thanks for the comment. I can paint figures ok but sculpting them is a real art. I envy you! These paper models are lots of fun. I'm sure your skill is up for it. Please do give it a try! A paper Dalek would be awesome!! Just saw your channel... -Dan
Just wow, work of art. It's amazing how this slightly uneven surface adds to the realistic look of the plane. One of the advantages of paper vs. plastic.
Thank you and I sooooo agree! You can see little bulges and ripples and they actually look fine. I guess since these are put together more like the real machine, this makes sense. I appreciate the view and the comments! -Dan
My goodness! I just subed to your channel. That modeling is gold! Nice work... -Dan
@@dansmith7617 Thank you for kind words and sub. I can tell the same about your modeling. Always great pleasure to watch. Štěpán
Unmasking of the canopy (to paraphrase a great author) “it is the best of times, it is the worst of times”. The post shading/ weathering came out very well indeed.
Thank you so much, ReedRancho...it's turning out as I'd hoped. Now I just can't ruin it with the landing gear, spinners and props! Stay tuned and thanks for the views and comment. -Dan
I love 30+ minute videos!!! this is honestley the most relatable highlight in my day so THANK YOU!!! Btw I have the SAME yellow tool, when I saw you had it I thought "lemme ask my sister" and sure enough she had it and gave it to me. The mode is looking INSANE!!!!!!!
Thanks, BBQ. It really is looking nice and pretty much like I had hoped. So much better than what it came with. Now that it's been shaded, the ribs and spars don't look as bad either. More to come! And thanks for looking and commenting. -Dan
Just an excellent video!
Well I wish I could stay in the camera! But I'll keep working on it. Thank you for the view and the comment! More to come... -Dan
First!...for the algorithm!
Quick everyone! Dan dropped another video....looks so cool with the canopy masking off! Such a beautiful model! Keep going. Can't wait to see how you tackle the wheels. Cheers my friend.
Thanks for the shout out, Neil! This model reminds me of a scorpion or dragon fly with that canopy. Looks nice in person too. Thanks again... -Dan
This model went from "Pretty cool" to. "WOW" REALLY fast.
Now I can't ruin it. The codes on the side could be..."interesting"! Thanks for looking again, BBQ. -Dan
Brilliant! The post-it tape is an outstanding idea.(now I gotta go to the store Again, mumble mumble) Great results all round. I guess I'll have to “stick on” this idea into my “Say. I Could Use this Stuff, I Bet” file.
RR...it works surprisingly well. I make sure that I spray as perpendicular to the mask as I can so as to not entice paint under the edge but I've had no issues yet. Not sure if I'll use regular tape for the fuselage codes but we'll see! Thanks for looking and commenting...I really appreciate it. More soon! -Dan
Been watching from to beginning. Great video series and it's good to see someone clean their airbrush like I do. Plus, the 410 is the coolest looking aircraft.
I gotta agree. It's so sinister and clean. The canopy and rear guns are cool too. So far, so good and thanks for watching! -Dan
Have been amazed that my lack of understanding of paper models had kept me “stuck on plastic” . But am intrigued by the possibilities and varieties I see offered (dang it now I need to learn somethin new) I belive the splinter camo was very sharp in the early years and as the war wore on they made changes in colors and styles. Like you rightly said, its your model so if you like it then that makes it Right. Especially as you are not making a specific aircraft but a general representative. Besides its only paint so if you change your mind you can repaint it. 👍
Thanks, Rancho. This one will just be a representative based on multiple subjects so this gives me a broad range. I sort of like it that way. Both plastic and paper are fun. I guess the main things about paper is low cost, many subjects and putting things together like the real thing. Give it a try at some point but there is a learning curve. Good thing is that you can transfer all of your other modeling skills to paper and it really helps. More soon and thank you for commenting! -Dan
Dan. If you carefully hold the Model Air paint bottle in one hand, you can apply lateral pressure to the dropper and it will separate from the bottle. Then just pour any leftover paint from your airbrush cup back into the bottle. The Me. Is looking fantastic!
Thanks, Tim! I never knew that. By the way...started a new WWI card model. I'll be working on that tonight! I hope all is well... -Dan
My respect to your work Dan, a masterpiece, thank you for the tips, all I can say is "Wow" I do like the way she's coming along.
Thank you, Roland. Can't wait for it to be on it's own two legs and weathered. -Dan
How come it is only 639 loffowers?..You should have a lot more. hoping many will find you.
loved how this turned out! awesome! really looking better and better. can't even tell it is paper. this is very inspiring Sir Dan. One love.
Thanks for the kind words, Neil. I think the main difference is your much better presence in your videos and they are much better produced! Great lighting, editing etc. Amazing graphics and thumbnails too. Super quality. Mine are sort of made in the garage with some duct tape and a light bulb. 😅I need to learn a thing or two from you! More soon and thanks for the comments. -Dan
As for the lines I think they are fine, as for contrast, YESSS add more contrast!
Thanks, BBQ. I did another coat of the dark gray and it all looks much better. Started adding decals! More soon...Dan
Your literally the ONLY modeler you-tuber who doesent use music!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I love the sound of the airbrush, and you moving the model.
I hope you didn’t get overspray on your car!
Ultra Man tee shirt? Awesome!
He was the best! I just got a plastic model from Japan of one of the Science Patrol's Jets and it came with a 1/24th scale resin Akiko Fuji figure. Ahhh....childhood. Thanks for looking and noticing, Arthur! 🤣 -Dan
This has been awesome!!!!! I can't wait to see more of this plane! the painting is the best part.
Stay tuned, FishBBQ! I may try some top painting tonight or at least figure out which colors to use...it'll be fun. Thank you again for the interaction and checking out these videos. -Dan
Now zis is detail!!!!!!! Awesome.
To the two previous posts: sometimes what's printed does not result in a good looking model. I built Angraf's Famo and there was no way to build it nicely without paint. So far, so good Dan!
Thanks, Greg. Maybe see you on Saturday? -Dan
Dan, this is a great series, however I think you’ve gone a bit over the top. The beauty of card model building (for me anyway) is that you don’t need to paint. I learned a lot from the series and your other endeavours. Looking forward to seeing more.
I think you are right, Edward. I marvel at petal spinners and complex curves with cuts that look clean and amazing...when you are really talented! Sometimes I at least cover and repaint spinners and cowlings but I know that others can make them look great. This particular art work on the model was just too child-like and gaudy for my liking plus the colors seemed way off and I don't know how to recolor on a computer so this is my fall back! Thanks for the comments and keep watching...-Dan
Interesting way to build a Paper kit. I stick what Evers printed.
Hello Randy...usually I do as well. It's the safest but this one needed a face lift. All of this panel line stuff is experimental so we'll see how it goes! Stay tuned and thanks for the comment. -Dan
Could you use thick elastic bands as a guide for the panel lines.? Awesome job by the way.!! 👍 👍 👍
THAT is a smart idea! I've used elastic bands to mask off convex spinners for painting. I need to try that. Great idea. Thank you so much for the suggestion. This is just what these videos are for... -Dan
@@dansmith7617 No problem, I hope it works well for you.!! I love your models, you're obviously very skilled. I used to make a lot of military models when I was younger, especially WW2 & cold war war birds. There's just something about that era of aviation when they were making the transition from piston powered props to the jet age that's very intriguing to me.. I've moved on to radio controlled models now, mostly scale off road vehicles like Land Rover, Jeep, rock buggies etc, on road & a few aircraft. RC aircraft are incredibly easy to fly these days because of the autopilot that keeps the aircraft in a safe attitude & won't let you get into trouble. You can turn it off or set it so it allows aerobatics but won't let you lose control. They're also extremely durable, I've lawn darted mine a few times & because they're made from compressed foam they just bend straight back.! If you haven't tried an RC aircraft I can't recommend them highly enough, around £100 will get you a good fully aerobatic beginner plane.! (Wltoys XK A-160, it's a beautiful looking Piper Cub or the A-800 is a powered glider with an 800mm wingspan & the XK A-430 is an Extra 3D aerobatic plane.. It can even do a prop hang.! 😉) Please stay safe out there mate & the very best wishes from Scotland 🏴 🙏 ❤️ 📻 🕹️ 🔋 🚗 🚖 🚕 🚔 🚚 🚙 🚘 🚓 🚒 🚑 🚐 🚎 🚤 🚁 🛩️ 👍 👍 👍
@@alantaylor353 Same to you, Alan. I've done lots of RC too and it's a blast as well. Mine have always been from wood and tissue etc. "old school" simply because that's how I learned. I wish I'd have had autopilot a few times! Off road stuff sounds fun too. I think I'll need to give that a go as well. All the articulating suspension is intriguing! Thanks for the comments and the views. Much appreciated and stay tuned! -Dan
I was looking through my collection of paper kits and I have two different DR1 kits from Orlik including the one you built during this video.
Great!! Start making it and show it off at the next meeting...😁 See you around! -Dan
Thanks again for showing this! Gonna go back and start from the beginning
Great, Paul. They aren't exciting, but you do get a good feel for how to stick one of these together. I appreciate the views and comments. Any questions just shout... -Dan
This is am excellent presentation. Thanks for showing this! Love your research materials too.
Thanks, Neil. Taking a lot of work but now I just hope the painting goes well! More soon... -Dan
Awesome!!! it's so great to see people find passion in model building 😊
Thanks, Fish. It seems to be a dying art form and has gotten so expensive, children are really out of the mix. It's still fun, though! Thanks for the comment. -Dan
Dan, thanks for the tip it's awesome filling and priming the card model. Can't wait to see end result.
Hi Roland...I got most of it done tonight and will post a video soon. Just put on the exhaust shrouds and it's tantalizingly close to the paint booth! Stay tuned and thanks for commenting. -Dan
It looks awesome Dan!!! in the morning Its great seeing this masterclass in modeling, in my feed!!!! I can NOT wait to see you paint it, and detaile it furthur!!!!
Nice build😁👍👍
Thank you, LH. This kit is one I've wanted for many years. It was really fun to put together and tweak. I hope to show more plastic in the future. Thanks for commenting too. -Dan
I have built plastics for years , really like these papercard models. They make a person "think". Thanks for sharing this!
PS! Thanks for commenting. I still love plastic models too and tend to build both back and forth. There is something neat about the paper models, though. I think it's especially nice for WWI era machines. Anyway, thanks for looking and commenting. If you are in the US, I hope the 4th of July is going great! -Dan
Did you put rtv on the thermostat housing or did you just put the gasket by itself?
Gasket by itself! Worked for me...Good luck. -Dan
Good to see you still at it!
Thanks, Neil. It's a long haul and filling etc. takes time but I hope to start painting soon! Thanks for the support...-Dan
I love your videos too!!!!!!! lol! I love how you two acctually show the video process not just slideshows
@@fishbarbeque8540 thanks good buddy! More to come soon with Dan one day in the future. Dan is showing me how to build it so I can do mine at a smaller scale. Cheers.
I'm so glad that somebody is showing filling and sanding paper model. I've been doing it for quite a while, although not the using the same products. Instead of plastic putty, I use sandable wood putty. For one thing it's cheaper, and generally less toxic being more akin to thickened wood glue. Second, I noticed some paper pilling in some sanding. Rather than prime the model, I harden the paper by brushing on some nail polish, letting it soak in and dry. A note on the nail polish, while clear is ideal, since one is painting over anyway anything from a store's clearance shelves will do for the most part. I also do this if I add putty to the general area around the fill so as not to pill edges when sanding. I also put extra cardstock behind the area or allow for larger internal tabs just in case I sand through so as to not end up with a physical hole. This is particularly the case in situations where small rounded shapes are needed. Of course this only works on paper models you are going to paint over anyway and finish much like a standard plastic kit. It does improve rounded shapes and some of the "egg crating" that can occur when ribs show through.
Z: Thanks for this comment and the great ideas! I too was thinking why not use wood putty but sort of forgot about it and just used what I had. You make a great point. Perhaps next time...Thanks again... -Dan
Audio levels are TOO low.
Thanks, David. I'll try to make things louder... -Dan
WONDERFULL!!!!!! 4:35 YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THAT! Even when you see the concord, xb-70, etc the skin is wrincled around the curved edges.
yup...this is why I want to make it look nice in this scale, but a few foibles will be tolerated! 😅 Thanks for looking and commenting. -Dan
OMG!!!! this is amzing!!! Im working on a 1:32 scale Sr-71 and this channel is INVALUABLE!!!
Let's hope it all turns out! It'll take a while, but I hope to plug away fairly regularly. SR-71 sounds amazing! -Dan
I still have the G9+HM half of the decals and the solid gun nose in my spare bits box from when I built that kit as the bomber version way back in the late 70's! thoroughly echo your words about the late Roy Cross, I'm building a F 80 shooting star from a 1973 box as a tribute to him myself, as I've always said, I feel like Roy personally sold me many kits due to his fantastic artwork.
I so agree, Phil. There are so many boxes I remember looking at just wishing I had the money to buy. His artwork was really special. I may build the Lancaster next which would go along well with the Dornier. We'll see! Thanks for subscribing and commenting. Much appreciated. -Dan
INSANEEEEEEE Take your sweet time Dan! we are patient learners 😁 THis is amazing craftsmanship, and I can't wait to see!!!!! the canopy looks great tooo, Btw, what putty will you be using? Regardless love this channel!!!! Love how you explain everything.
Hello Fish! I'm glad you like it. I will be using plain ol' Tamiya putty for plastic models. Sanding gently etc. seems to work just fine. We'll see!! Thanks again for looking and commenting and sticking around. -Dan
Hey great to see you again Dan, as always, I enjoy your experience on these models. I am almost encouraged to build one who knows a bomber ha ha, Do you use regular plastic putty? If possible show us how to prime these work of art. :) God bless.
Thanks, Roland. I will do my best. Basically, I treat it like a plastic model and use normal putty for plastic models and gentle sanding. After multiple applications, it should smooth out nicely. We'll see! Thank you for commenting and hanging around long enough to see this one through. It's a cool model. -Dan
@@dansmith7617 Thanks for the tip :) Most definetly it is a cool model.
That "round" tool is so nice 👍 what is it
Hi Fish...it's called a dabbing tool (I think). It comes with a bunch of others of various sizes and a large block with round indents. I think it can form bit of metal etc. but it's great for these paper models. -Dan
Amazing, I am OFFICIALLY a subscriber for life.
YOUR AMAZING!!! your the only one making paper model building like this! Thank you SO much for not just doing a slideshow!!!
As soon as I saw it was not just a slide show (which Is SO tired!!) I subscribed liked and commented!!!!! Cant wait to see what you do next!
That's awesome, FBBQ! Thank you very much. I'm working on this one and will be posting more videos soon. Work (real life) has finally eased up a bit! I appreciate the sub... -Dan
