. Solution news...In June 2024, Rob's Stairlift Repairs in Vancouver and a retired Master Electrical Engineer in Alabama discovered AC ripples from a battery charger exceeding 70 volts -- not its stated 33-volt DC output. Fortunately, a safety feature in one particular stairlift model prevented what could have been a fireball, such as the one that killed Tim Lilley and others. Furthermore, the battery charger in Alabama under test voided home insurance policy. It has been removed. Two weeks later, Rob came up with a preventive measure that is applicable to all battery chargers, especially those charging Li-Po, or Lithium-Polymer batteries. Does your lithium battery charger produce an AC Ripple? A lithium fire cost a Richmond landlord $74K in court. His insurer did not defend him. However, money cannot bring back Tim Lilley.

@FDNY. As a fire protection technology professor, I have a question for you. Understanding that the dangers associated with lithium-ion fires are now the leading cause of fires and deaths in New York city, and the that the FDNY currently carries an encapsulator agent on its HAZMAT units, is there any thought of using this technology to combat lithium-ion fires? It is also my understanding that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey also uses the same encapsulator agent within its area of responsibility, so there may be an opportunity to mirror responses to these fires. Informational only: NFPA 18A is the only standard that specifically references lithium-ion fires (1.1, 1.2, 1.3), and this type of agent has been proven to be effective (A 4.3) on these types of fires: “Water additive based on spherical micelle technology (encapsulator agents) conforming to Section 7.7 has been tested extensively by independent third-party testing organizations… documenting fire suppression, control and elimination of thermal runaway, and encapsulation of both flammable electrolyte and other explosive off-gases, rendering them nonexplosive. Encapsulating technology reduces the toxicity of HF gas exposure to humans.” why does the FDNY not use this type of agent to mitigate the dangers associated with lithium-ion battery fires? I would appreciate your thoughts so I can share (with my students) what the FDNY is doing to lead the effort in addressing this new(er) and deadly challenge. Thank you for all that you do and Stay Safe, Steve
