What is happening in Manipur today had long been predicted by far-sighted and visionary political leaders of Manipur like Rungsung Suisa, the first MP from Outer Manipur PC, Rishang Keishing the three-time chief minister of Manipur and RV Mingthing a former minister. They lovingly asked the Meetei brothers at different times to join the ST bandwagon to remain united. Rishang Keishing made the last attempt to ask the Meetei brothers to join the ST club in October 1981. Like the pot calling the kettle black, some vociferous yet orthodox Meetei who thought of ST as children of a lesser god staged a protest dharna at Keisampat against the move of the then chief minister. The proposal was stillborn. RV Mingthing attended meetings of STDCM supporting the ST demand till his last. Later some retired and senior citizens like Prof. Mahendra of MU, Lt Col (Rtd) Laishram Lokendra, Lt. Col (Rtd) RK Rajendra, Sr. SP Potsangbam Sonamani, Rtd CAPF officer B Angousana Sharma, Dr Ratankumar, HOD (Rtd) of MU, Dr RK Nimai IAS (Rtd), Yumnam Dhiraj, Rtd Director, Khaidem Mani, Rtd Acting Chairman, MHRC, Heigrujam Nabashyam of WMC, Sapam Bheigya, Superintendent of State Archives (Rtd) and Yambem Laba, a senior journalist etc made concerted appeals for Meetei ST. The titular king of Manipur Maharaj Leishemba Sanajaoba, the sitting MP of the Rajya Sabha, graced a grand function held at Konung Lampak supporting the ST demand. He also took part in a sit-in protest at Thangmeiband for Meetei ST. We demanded Statehood, we demanded the 8th Schedule and we demanded ILP. Why should not we demand ST? It's our Constitutional right. There's a list of Manipur's 34 Yelhoumee communities (aboriginal and original inhabitants) appended under Article 342(1) of India's Constitution where neither Meitei nor Meetei is included. Are we Meetei a group of self-styled Yelhoumee only, devoid of Constitutional recognition? Have our place in the Constitution been replaced by infiltrators hardly two hundred years old who followed the British as porters and mercenaries? How come some Meetei Ojas have a common agenda with infiltrators in opposing the ST demand? Have the Ojas been taken for a ride by our adversaries whose hidden agenda is open today? How many Meetei professors and their ilk who opposed ST demand tooth and nail know the English equivalent of the Manipuri word Yelhoumee written in India's Constitution? How many of them know the Kangpokpi district boundary begins from Langol Cheiraoching and Baruni hills? Aren't we paying the price of ignorance and negligence accumulated over the years by becoming refugees (IDPs) in our State? Aren't we like a group of political prisoners under house arrest confined within a space of 6% of the total unable to cross beyond Awang Sekmai?
