Downhill Desire MTB

Downhill Desire MTB

join me on my journey as I learn how to ride a mountain bike !
So i bought an entry level calibre 2 cubed, with the intention of riding gravel paths just to lose some weight and get fitter! Then (as you do) I watched some KZread videos!!!
And i'm hooked. So as a total novice follow me and see how easy (or hard) it is to progress in this awesome sport!!

    Grip 2 is no longer a high end fork! Good to see a G2 noob using the compression dials though, so many ppl just up the spring rate with pressure and tokens and ride fully open effectivly turning a £300 damper into a paperweight. Dont be a set and forget guy, if im riding trails ill drop 5psi and run 1or 2 clicks of HSC and 3 or 4 clicks LSC unless im at nant yr arian whoch requires no damping at all if im bike parking it the 5psi goes back in and im using all the HSC and 9 or 10 clicks of LSC

    Having the rebound too slow, all the way right >, will cause the fork to suck up over rock gardens and multiple roots, having it too fast, all the way to the left <, will cause it to bounce around and lose traction. Fox sticker on the fork is ballpark but can be way off in most cases. I'd suggest stating with 0 HSC 2 LSC and set your rebound to the half the clicks from full open to closed. ride the bike over some rough ground like a continuous root or rock section and see if the fork feels to soft or harsh. For your weight id edge more to the closed side of the rebound adjustment as you start to make changes. If I'd been able to make the glentress day out next week, i could have helped set it up for you :( Also your not hitting anything serious enough to push your fork all the way through the travel, so you can afford to drop the air pressure a little to help with the feel, without causing it to dive drastically on braking

  • @DownhillDesireMTB
    @DownhillDesireMTB5 күн бұрын

    i've now made more adjustments, (much faster rebound) and it's waaaay better

  • @janhorneland8760
    @janhorneland87606 күн бұрын

    More air is never the solution if the fork feels harsh or cause oversteer. Air pressure scales along with riderweight and riderskill, but really it's 100% personal preference. Especially when you have a large fork that has inches to spend. You are starting at the wrong side of things I think. Try air pressure 80+ and run the top forkvalve fully open, and a few clicks in the rebound . That's pretty much how "plush" a 38 will ever feel, but with it comes "slow" and "saggy". I think if you start from here, it's easier to play with the settings, little by little, and find your own preferred settings. I have 38's on my H10, they are FANTASTIC, but you gotta dial them to your liking, properly, not within the parameters of some chart. The 36's are a much more plush fork, and I suspect many would like them more, if they compared for themselves Edit: i ran 120 in the 36's with topvalve fully closed, i run below 100 on the 38's with top valve one click from fully open. -huge difference in the setup, but this is how i prefer them for me😊

  • @DownhillDesireMTB
    @DownhillDesireMTB5 күн бұрын

    yea, i think it's all so individual preference. i' had another litter tinker last week, and got it feeling muuuuuch better. i'll ride it like that for a while and see how i get on. it's a massive improvement on the rockshox 35 i had on!

    Im sure you'll get there with it ,cant offer any advice but on my giant regin id set my sag and had sort of neutral settings on the rebound and compression, i was at Hamsterley yesterday and bunped into a friend who partakes in another hobby we are into i didn't realise he was into bikes ,turns out hes got 25 years experience and mechanics for some lads who race he took my bike off me spent 20 minutes setting the shocks up and tyre pressure, we then went down transition or transmission cant remember what its called lol and the difference in my bike was unbelievable, i had it far too hard i was running 105 in the fork and im 105kg with kit he ended up at 90 psi ...all i took from that is that the guides are just that and i was way off hes gave me some tips for stuff to try next time out. So maybe they are just a tad on the firm side with the air 🤷🏻‍♂️. Enjoying the vids 👍🏻

  • @SOIIndsutries

    This is really interesting as I have a Fox 38 on one of my bikes (2021) and have been battling it for years. It just seems to be a very harsh fork. Tried so many set up configurations and it is always extremely brutal on square edge hits and jank and is easily confused by fast, repeating, rough terrain. You often need to run it at much lower pressure than Fox recommend, but it is easy to then slip into fork dive territory on steeper, rutted terrain. I'm sure other riders will have better experiences, but for me it has not performed anything close to the lower spec RockShox stuff on my other bikes (Lyrik and Yari, respectively). Fox's recommended settings seem way off, whereas RockShox are bang on it, or very close. It is in its element, though, when you are hitting any kind of jump line, so I tend to only use that bike for bike park laps. I'm sure in the right hands, the full potential of this fork can be unleashed, but the stars have never aligned for me with this one. Hope you can pull it into its operating window, and for those to whom it has worked, that is awesome, I'm not wanting to be an internet hater.

  • @DownhillDesireMTB
    @DownhillDesireMTB5 күн бұрын

    found out fox 38 has something called mid valve choking. when you run rebound to slow it effects compression making it feel awful. i've sped up my LSR alot and it's miles better!!!

    @SOIIndsutries5 күн бұрын

    @@DownhillDesireMTB I did not know that, but it is funny you should say that as I have also (out of frustration!) sped up the LSR a little and maybe I'm starting to see a tiny bit more manners from the fork. • @stevenparker4378
    @stevenparker43786 күн бұрын

    @@DownhillDesireMTB adding 10mm hasn't just changed your head angle mate, you've also lengthened the wheel base of the bike, making it longer. there is is also the offset of the fork to take into consideration when buying a new fork. Both off these things can really upset the handling and geometry of the bike!. slacker head angle will make the bike less responsive in the turns and the incorrect offset can make the handling sluggish or twitchy depending on the difference either way

    Just done something similar mate. My hero 10 has been terrible over the last few months (Take a look at my recent video). A mate who uses a hero 11 and a 12 has had even more issues. It just seems gopro are not at all reliable i think i was lucky to get 2 years of relatively hassle free use from mine. I now have a DJI action 3. I looked at a few comparisons of the 3 and 4 and felt the 4 was not a very big step up in quality or features that iI would actually use. Got the action 3 with chest mount and extra battery and a few other bits on prime day for £199. As for the hero 10 I pan on taking it into a CEX store where they offer £120 for it as long as it works. Id rather do that than sell it private and have someone give me earache when they have the niggles and issues i've been having.
