Calvin Institute of Christian Worship

Produced by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship (worship.calvin.edu)

The Calvin Institute of Christian Worship (CICW), located at Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is an interdisciplinary study and ministry center that promotes the scholarly study of the theology, history, and practice of Christian worship and the renewal of worship in worshiping communities across North America and beyond.

Founded in 1997, CICW is dedicated to using the unique resources of a Christian liberal arts college and theological seminary-with its collegial environment, international faculty and student body, wide interdisciplinary expertise, and culture of ongoing learning-to partner with congregations, denominations, parachurch organizations, professional organizations, and publishers to further our mission.

I think the royal priesthood from exodus is more complex than just this one statement that is mentioned. What about the instance when Moses defines elders within the people that are called to talk in the spirit, in wisdom? It is stated in the bible that people outside this elders circle started to talk in wisdom as well - this was criticised by people, but Moses reaction only was - it would be best if everyone would speak in the spirit, in wisdom. I think the definition of royal priesthood is depending on the circumstances - is the current congregation of believers mature in the faith? Do they know the scripture well? Are they beyond questions of - what am I allowed to do and what not? Do the believers trust in the sovereignty of God and justification through grace by Jesus and do they find confidence in this truth? Are the believers covering the sins of fellow believers with love and are they correcting each other with meeknes? I think this is very important and posssible.

L'extrait est trop court, on n'a pas la totalité de la mélodie. Dommage, car c'est bien interprété. La mélodie est utilisée pour 3 psaumes différents : celui-ci, le 98 et le 66.

Ooh, nice. We're about to use this next Sunday for our Offertory. We practiced it last week at a much faster tempo (about 83 as compared to this recording's 70). I wonder what Marty Haugen would say. Also, our voices are all in unison.

Verse 1 There's no other place I can hide till the storm that rages subsides. My voice cries to God from the flood, and I'm saved because of his blood. Chorus Here on Jesus Christ I will stand. He's the solid rock of my life. He's the solid rock of my life. He's the solid rock of my life. Verse 2 It is not the work of my hands that has washed away all my sins. I'm redeemed, and all of my days, Jesus Christ will be my heart's praise. Verse 3 When my days on this earth are done, and I stand at God's holy throne, my heart will not have any fear; in Christ's righteousness I am here. Kwake Yesu nasimama, ndiye mwamba ni salama. Ndiye mwamba ni salama, ndiye mwamba ne salama.

All these young earth people would argue that all the science that says the universe is old is wrong but never consider their understanding of scripture may be incorrect. That is called arrogance.

I believe God is a interdimensional being. I just don't believe God was floating around in the blackness of space for eternity and one day decides it is pretty boring and figured it was time to create something. I also believe this physical dimension was new to the spirit God and he spent billions of years learning and planning his creation. He obviously mastered it and had great joy creating it.

So let me get this right. If stars are still being formed the creation is not yet complete. If children of God are still being born yet again that is also not complete. John 5:17 Jesus said the Father as well as himself were working even on the Sabbath. It sounds to me the meaning and intent of the 7th day Sabbath needs to be reevaluated.

1 Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. 2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. 3 I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. 4 More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore? (Psalm 69:1-4, ESV)

Perhaps the most frustrating speaker I have ever listened to. You’re constantly saying what does he mean by that? And if he were to explain himself, we would have a dozen more questions asking and what does he mean by that? Clear as mud!

WOW! I’ll even say that backward... WOW! This is a brilliant sermon on why Christians should dive deeply and daily into the Psalms. May all people gifted with the God-given talent to put the Psalms as NT Wright explained into songs that connect us in the modern-day worship songs in church it could transform in an extraordinary way anyone who sings them and allows the words to saturate our hearts and minds.

"He is making all things new... " You changed the lyric "He" to "God". I guess Calvin School is very much on the progressive side where God is not the Father of all of us. Shame... Beautiful singing though.

Correct me if I’m wrong….as a choir director in Shetland, Scotland and not in US…..but is the music here not by Virgil Thomson? I know it says so on the video title but the credits on the title page say Randall who wrote a lot, but not this!

You're absolutely correct - Virgil Thomson! The tune is 'traditional' but he arranged the choral setting sung here.

Excellent seminar! After not having led a choir for a number of years, I have been offered a position to lead a top notch group in my area, so I have been rethinking and preparing for that first rehearsal. Many of the things that were discussed and demonstrated here are things which I also espouse. This session really helped me to focus on what I want to do. Thank you.
