Ill be keeping my old MS170 going for as long as possible after seeing this. The cover is removed needing no tool to turn the knob. It wasn't necessary to change from the MS170's simple air cleaner to a difficult to service snap-off design that looks like it will break.

Hi, jlp01049. I would recommend the FSA 60R or the FSA 80R/80 if you are interested in battery power. Both the 60R and 80R will have similar run times with an AK 30 battery (the 60R being slightly longer). The FSA 80R, however, is more powerful than the 60R and has a gearbox, which makes it very similar to the FSA 56 gas-powered trimmer. With all that being said, I don't think you could go wrong with either!

My first saw was a 041 farm boss. No AV or chain breaks. In the late 70s I started working in the woods mainly firewood. Soon I was logging and did it for over 30 years. Owned and rebuilt and broke more saws than I can count. Now this is just my opinion but trust me when it comes to saws I've been there done that. In my day we had 3 main brands of saws all loggers used. Jonsereds, Husqvarna and Stihls. If your saw was anything else it was out dated junk. If it takes more than 3 or 4 pulls to start it's junk. The gas and oil on those rubber mounts was never good but unavoidable filling your saw. Stihl took for ever to go to the springs on the mounts. Why? At least the reds had a strap limiting the motion so you didn't rip the rubbers out when pinched.I had a 920 and a 930 back in the day. The reds had a pull cord prob and some would vapor lock. I owned a 370 and 372 xp husky both boat ankers. I think husky merged or bought out Jonsered. There both sweden saws and the Stihl is germany. I've had the little 028, 038 super, 044 and the old 056 and a pair of the 064 magnum 2's. I do not like the spongy pull cords on these newer saws. I do luv that quick adjuster on these smaller Stihls for the bar. Bottom line is if you go with a husky or a stihl provided it wasn't made on a monday you should be good to go. I always run a Oregon Bar and Chain with Oregon files to keep it sharp.I hand sharpen because thats the way I learned. I cut a 4 inch piece of limb to stick on my file for a handle. Always use Stihl or Husky mix and give your gas jug a shake or 2 before fill up. Husqvarna has the best boots for winter months. But always good boots hard hat and chaps. Be safe. Stay away from retail stores for saw purchases.

Here is the difference between the stihl oils I have seen. Stihl woodcutter is good for a bar and chain that is less then 18 inches if I run a bar and chain longer the 18 inches I use the platinum it has more tacifier in it. I have always used the platinum. On paper the MS162 is a definite improvement on vibration levels over both the MS170 & MS171. 162 has the same displacement, weight and power-weight ratio of the 170, (the 171 had a very slight increase of displacement but curiously less power). All three saws share the same chain pitch and gauge, with the same recommended bar lengths. Sound levels: 170_ 111 ~ 100dB 171_ 112 ~ 99dB 162_ 113 ~ 100dB Vibration levels: 170_ R5.2 ~ L5.5 171_ R4.0 ~ L4.5 162_ R3.2 ~ L3.0 A friend has an old MS170 and the very few times I’ve been forced to use it, I’ve considered to be a real bone-shaker. So the 162 would be that much easier to use on longer days. Someone’s going to ask if I’m going to buy a 162? Well maybe if I start carving. As it is, I’ve got two small saws and a medium size saw; and that will do for now.

  • @HillyRidgeSalesService

The improved anti vibration of the MS162 is very noticeable and does make for a smoother cutting experience.
