What’s a good dime tone amp? Given you boost it eq it etc? I want to get one but thought to pick. Want the tight tone that works with jaguar speakers from what I see. Cheers
I just picked one of these up. It was found in a storage locker from that hadn't been opened since the 80s. All it needs is tubes.
This randomly popped up in my recommended. I didn't watch it all, but your guitar at the beginning is very much either out of tune or in need of a setup. The string gauge is too light for our tuning.

@Jarrett-Hopper agreed. I have an Ampeg SS-150 that is similar in that aspect but can get a great tone on its one, however boosted is best.

Thanks for the comment and the clarification! To my understanding the, RG100H is the rackmountable head version of this amp via the ES being in a chassis.
They definitely have a unique tone that takes a bit of massaging to get it to where you want it, but there are some cool sounds to be had. Even George Lynch used one for a bit.
For sure! I really like the gain channel once you get it there. Cleans…not so much!
@@Jarrett-Hopper Most definitely haha Early solid state amps can be rather hit or miss... the Valvestates (technically a hybrid), Stereo Chorus and Lab Series seem to be the rare ones that get positive reviews. I have a Peavey VT Classic 410 hybrid from the 70-80's that I pretty well relegated as a pedal platform because the solid state preamp was a fizzy mess. I used to run a Mesa Studio Preamp through the 6L6 power amp and that made it usable. Apparently now they're sought after for doom and sludge tones. Next time I visit my parent's house I'll have to knock the dust off of it and give it a try in that context lol
Totally agree! There have been some very hit or miss solid state amps over the years with a few that really shined through IMO. One from the 80’s/90’s that gets a ton of love is the Peavey VTM120 which may be the ugliest amp head I’ve seen. People love it though! I think the major negative to solid state amps are that they just for some reason or another don’t have the presence that tube amps have to stand out above a mix. Fever with the newer modeler focused solid state amps like the PowerStage series. A great tube power amp just seems to rise above.
@@Jarrett-Hopper Plus lets be realistic, a lot of us had those amps before we really learned how to properly dial in a tone haha It's funny how I've seen amps that folks hated when they were new being sight after now. I remember the Marshall Mode 4 being absolutely hated, now they have a cult following after Alex Skolnick started using them.
Right?!?!? I did that myself on more times than I can count! I’ve even rebought gear that I got rid of knowing that I didn’t maximize its full potential. It’s actually one of the reasons I respect Billy Corgan so much not only as an artist, but as a producer. That guy knows how to take gear to amazing levels! For example, the main tones on “The Everlasting Gaze” were made with a Crate Solid State GX-10 Practice Amp! An amp most of us would have had as starting guitarists in the 90’s or would have shunned!

It depends how much gain you dial in on the third channel. In the demo, I only had the gain around 3 and was not using a noise gate. If you dial the gain higher than that, I would highly suggest a gate like a Fortin Zuul in your chain.
I actually Have this same amp, Well It's a RG80ES Mini Stack with matching 2x12 & 4x10 Cabinet in excellent condition. This was my first real Amp back in the Early 80's I bought new . It's retired now. I need to play it again!

The second channel in my opinion is pretty awesome especially if you are looking for what is like to call “Corksniffer amp tones” … basically sounds like something all the blues guys would pay a lot of money for. I was really shocked by it. Its ability to pick up nuanced fuzz is insane!
You made tgis amp sound better than i remember. A friend of mine got one of these in 91, and it was a huge down grade from his peavey bandit. He wound up just using it as a power amp for a gsp21 legend. As terrible as the tones were in that thing they were better than the amps.
Thanks TL for watching and your feedback! This amp definitely needs a lot of help. I typically do “versatile” demos to show how you can get the most out of your amps playing different styles, but this one would not be one I recommend for that. It’s mainly a nostalgia piece and I think the only folks anymore that really look for one are Dimebag Darrell fans. With that said it does sound great captured in the Quad Cortex as you can just capture the dialed in tones
@@Jarrett-Hopper Yeah definitely, I can say with no shame that at that time neither of us had a clue about how to dial in a tone let alone Dimes tone or really how to use pedals. It was nice to see someone get some good sounds out of it.

I really haven’t been able to afford vintage gear so when I find a guitar I want I have to build it myself. But recently I had a 1964 SG Jr. come to me for a refinish because someone had taken a belt sander to it and butchered it up plus it an old head stock break repair that looked sketchy. As I was working on it I started studying this SG and noticing the years of wear. It dawned on me that someone had played the shit out of this guitar due to the fret and fret board wear. The only reason someone would play a guitar this much is because it probably sounds good. Needless to say once I completed the repairs and refinish of this guitar I asked the owner if he would sell it to me. I now own my first vintage guitar.
What an awesome story @chromehunter67 and I’m glad that you are now on the journey with your first vintage guitar! My first electric vintage guitar was a 72 SG that needed a refret horribly, had the bigsby removed, and a tune-o-matic added later! Parsons Guitars at the time refret the guitar for me, but unfortunately they ruined the binding in the process (what a mess that can be also in terms of refret and refret values with the binding tangs!!!!). Sounds like you found an awesome one AND that you have the skills to bring them back to life. Much respect there!
@@Jarrett-Hopper generally I discard vintage guitars because I can’t participate with them and the cost of owning one. Generally I can build a really nice guitar with the best parts for around $ 1200 but I must say that there’s something special about aged wood that you can’t recreate with a new guitar or materials. What an incredibly well researched video, so glad it popped up on my feed. Over the past year I've waded into the vintage guitar world, and am always learning. I focus mostly on odd-ball stuff, primarily Danelectro. It's more affordable, but also where my heart lies, I like the point you hammered home about knowing that a vintage instrument will have costs and can need an emotional factor. I passed up on a 1958 Rickenbacker 360 Capri earlier this year, it was at a very attractive price, but it had an old headstock repair,. I knew that I just didn't have the knowledge to make an investment that big over online photos. As far as modern guitars that capture vintage feel, the boutique market is often the way to go, I have an RS Guitarworks Slabelectro a Danelectro-Tele hybrid that feels terrific. The few times I've play Novo Guitars they blew me away with their resonant pine bodies. There are far cheaper way to get that sound as feel, as you said pickups are the place to start. Gemini makes great affordable handmade pickups, pop them in a 80s-90s Korean Squier and you'll have a great time!

I have tried them out but they just weren’t for me. I really wanted them to be since Jimmy Page plays them! I terms of Boutique guitars, I agree with you on the boutique builders doing amazing things! My favorite boutique builders are Joe Riggio from Riggio Guitars and Mike Bowes from MB Guitars for making vintage instruments. My favorite modern boutique builder is Tom Smith at TWSmith Guitars. Also Troy Anderson at Chicago Fret Works also builds amazing instruments! Thanks again for tuning in and good luck with your journey!

I hear you! I think it’s definitely who you ask. I know a lot of folks that love the names as they make them laugh. Other folks find them cringey. You can’t please everybody! In my opinion they are the best readily produced amps that are modified circuits of classic platforms. It’s pretty awesome that you can get an incredible sounding British circuit platform that isn’t considered so boutique that you can’t resell it if you ever wanted to.

It’s my understanding that the Evil Pumpkin channel is the one based on Jason’s original Evil Pumpkin & the Killer Kali channel is based on the Fortin Cali/Killer Kali.
Hi @cchristensen9901 - Appreciate you watching and thanks for the info! So this is partially true. There is a switch on CH.3 that allows you to switch between Jason’s modded Marshall and his Fortin Cali. Pretty awesome option if you ask me!

Hopper- I know you can program your own MIDI settings w the fortin MIDI pedal but does the amp come w pre programmed MIDI presets. Thanks for the video
Hi @YourCaliBos - Thanks for the great question and for watching the demo! I was unsure of this so I researched it after you asked the question. Looks like a pretty straightforward process where you will send a PC Change signal from your MIDI controller to the Evil Pumpkin which will be confirmed by the MIDI LED light lighting up. You then make your adjustments to the amp that you would like and then select MIDI STR. I am also unsure of the amount of stored settings you can utilize, but I do know that it will accommodate 8 as that is the amount the Hydra supports and the amount my buddy Jason has currently stored. Additionally, I don’t think it has presets saved however, Jason Frankhouser includes his preferred settings in the manual so you could make a MIDI patch based on his settings. I also detailed mine if you like the tones that came up with.
@@Jarrett-Hopper I believe that it can receive 128 as that is the midi standard. You seem to have the process pretty much correct. You press the foot switch that you want to program. Then on the amp, select the channel, master 1 or 2 and FX loop on/off. Hit the midi str switch and voila. The amp also has midi out which functions only as a passthrough. The amp itself does not send any midi messages.

Hi Austin, Thanks for the compliments! It was an amazing time. You are going to have a blast! To answer your question, yes you get to pick any two songs from their catalog. When I initally asked the guys at Fret12, they said to pick two songs from the first album. They are really cool about it though so I doubt they would have issue if you played one of the new ones, but I wouldn't risk it. Good luck man and have a great time!!! Jarrett

Glad I could help Austin! It's pretty informal, and my guess it will be cool of them. My thoughts are that if you play one of the new ones, I would look at the setlist pics from the Army of 12 FB. The ones I know they have been playing are "Another Heart", "Flying Monkeys", and I think "Cauterize". Also if you're interested in the tunings for the "All I Was" album, I got them all from Fret12 and posted them to the Army of 12 FB. That way you can be even more prepared. Take a vid man!
