Riding the donkey through the woods to that music was a Vibe, honestly. Make a whole game of just riding animals to chill tunes and I'd put more hours in than Stardew Valley (but probably not as many as FFXIV).

The wife jokes got old fast. Try using the 3 joke rule. You can use a joke 3 times and then it’s not funny anymore

Today, it's a game where as a player I'm frustrated with how the game is managed, and with how unpopulated the game is due to the "game ded" paradox. It's like playing in a post-apocalyptic world and weirdly appropriate for the story.

Once went to a gig with a friend. It was a couple hours drive away. The place was packed so was difficult to get a drink. The band was an older band i had never heard of before, they showed up half an hour late. Only played for an hour (was meant to be 2 even with the 30 mins they were late excluded) and then we went home because my friend had to be up early for work. Thats this game,

I used to play this game a lot. It was my first MMO I got into. A lot of his gripes about the new player experience was patched in. The (non-existent) difficulty is because of a combination of ability balance changes and gear power creep being retroactively pushed onto lower level combat. So a fight designed with the player's attacks that deal 11 damage max per hit now are fights with the player dealing 50. Companions being any role was also a change. Originally they were 1 specific role with actions unique to that character (in name). Now they are all the same. Great for gameplay, bad for story theme as the pacifist doctor that had enough of killing and was originally only a healer can now be your DPS companion. Flashpoints were the biggest disappointment for me. The one he showed in the video was originally the first "dungeon". You had to unlock it with a quest and it required a full party of 4 players. I still remember people quitting because those that chose the evil option won the dice roll halfway through. Dungeons after that all required a balanced party: 1 tank, 1 healer, 2 DPS. They also tell another connected story. The order is yet another story with their own characters. When I last played, they were all made into tactical flashpoints meaning they boosted your stats to 50 (but not your abilities or skill tree) and got rid of the role requirements. So yes, I did get into an originally 50 level dungeon with 3 level 12 healers. But beyond all of that, the thing that I would say to not play this game is the launcher. For some reason it defragments your computer for every patch, regardless of what the patch is. 5mb hotfix came out? Gotta defragment first. If you cancel at any point of the defragmentation process it makes you download the entire game again next time.

17:12 ''the small but nicely designed maps'' oh boy, this is true for the first few chapters of the story, the later maps are HUGE..

1:26:45 I don't think that you (from 3 years ago) was talking about the MMORPG that is live and has an active community. This is more for game designers creating the game from the very beginning. Like the mountain example you gave earlier: instead of creating two paths to go up the mountain, create the longer path and then improve the quality of life of the path.

Gotta say, I really like the mercenary system. It would be cool to see in more MMOs for those who don't really want to socialize, or are online in weird hours and can't play with their friends like normal but need to be able to catch up some.

I'd play a LoL MMO. LoL itself hurts to play but I bought some skins and characters on sale. LoL has incredibly strong character design. I'll have to see the character creator and what races are playable before I consider jumping in though. In LoL proper I like to play all the weird beasts and monsters. I joined for Vel'Koz and became a Kha'Zix main. Let me play as a freaky void mantis!

Healing items in the cash shop are mostly useless since there are skills that heal or you can apply lifesteal to a combo if you really need it. Either way, most dps builds are glass cannons that learn to dodge all attacks. Also expanding into other skill trees is a must. Some skills from other classes can be used by anyone and vital to most builds.

I have to say I did make a frowny face at your description of GW2. It's not wrong, but that's the charm of the game. You can dabble in what you feel like, and that doesn't have to be one thing. If you're not feeling like doing dungeons one week, then that's fine! Your point about focusing on what a game does well is very correct and I agree whole-heartedly, but there's absolutely space for games that have a broader but shallower scope.

What I never liked about this game is how quickly progress will slow to a crawl for newer players. You have to rely on youtube videos to show you the best place to farm and if you are using anything other than bow you are kinda screwed. I wish the game would give new players more opportunities to reset skill trees so they aren't afraid to try out other classes and figure out what works best. Also you can dodge basic attacks if you evade right as they are going to hit you.

I remember playing this game a couple years back. A couple online pals wanted to make a guild and wanted me to join, however they lived in the UK while I live in the US, so we could never actually play or meet each other in-game due to time zone differences. This led to me mostly playing by myself (with a AI Mercenary joining my party). However, as fun as the game was, I hit a road block. My character was around Lvl 124, and I had a really difficult time fighting bosses, even ones that were around the same level as me. It practically required me to team up with other players, but that never happened, so after more defeats by bosses, i ended up leaving the game.

ive the beaten ps2 spin off of this series (champions of norrath, and the sequel champions return to arms) sooooo many times as a child, back then i didn't even know this was an mmo... I watched your series to find out if the mmos were still good nowadays, but unofortunately it seems like they are no where close to their former glory...
