This is the Swaminarayan Akshardham Mandir, located at 4N739 Route 59 in Bartlett, IL. The design team consisted of several professionals throughout the country. I was the Geotechnical Engineer, responsible for the design of the foundation, Mr. A Fanci, from California, was the structural engineer, a professor from Urbana Champaign designed concrete, and there were a few more. The requirements were very stringent, the settlement was supposed to be minimum. Three masons were brought from India for carving the marble stones. The marble was imported from Italy. The lady in this video is saying that the stones were sent to India for carving - not to my knowledge. How can you transport several million tons of marble stones to India? The marble stones were carved here at the site by the masons brought here from India. Just for the reference, a brief description of the facility is presented below. The facility consisted of a temple, Haveli, Prayer and Community Halls, Gymnasium, Parking Lot and other related structures. The temple building is supported on columns, with column loads ranging from approximately 35 kips at Shikhra (crown) to approximately 14 to 32 kips at other places. The dome at the center of the temple was supported on 8 columns, with a column loading of 62 kips at each location. Approximately 4 to 14 feet of controlled fill was placed in the temple area and vicinity before the construction. The field exploration consisted of drilling a total of six soil borings to depths ranging from 20 feet to 60 feet. Briefly, underlying the fill materials the borings encountered stiff to hard silty clay. Stratum of loose to dense sand was observed to be embedded between the strata of silty clay from a depth of approximately 18.5 feet to 23.5 feet. Groundwater level was encountered in the borings at a depth of approximately 18 feet during the subsurface exploration. Connecting tunnels and retaining walls were supported on a shallow-based foundation, proportioned for a maximum allowable bearing pressure of 3,000 pounds per square foot. The temple building was supported on caissons (drilled piers) having straight shaft and a few caissons were also belled at the bottom. Once again, the marble stones were not sent to India for carving, they were carved here at the site by the masons, who were invited to the USA from India. Thanks, Padmakar Srivastava, Ph.D., P.E. Mem. Soc. of American Military Engineers Mem/Reviewer ASTM; Mem. ASCE
I did a google search and found out that the stones were really sent to India for carving. I apologize for my lack of knowledge. I was only related with the design and construction of the temple, which was quite a challenge. Therefore, upon the completion of the foundation of the temple, I was out of touch with the remaining construction. The masons which were brought from India were expert in fastening the stones without any cement, concrete or any other material.
Any Indian must be proud to know that the Geotechnical Design was done by Dr. Padmakar Shrivastava, an Engineering Graduate and Post Graduate fron University of Roorkee ( now IIT, Roorkee), who had did his Doctrate from U.S.A. subsequently.
