    3:28 in my humble opinion, the reason that moers spent so much effort on describing the city of Atlantis was that the bluebear book is the first book under the world-building of Zamonia. I think what happened was that moers took the opportunity of introducing Atlantis to design all the species and creatures, and yeah… it has very little to do with the plot. The first half of this chapter was just a giant chunk of world-building texts. in his later books, since the designing and world-building has been done already, the plot thus moves more smoothly.

  • @shaunholt
    @shaunholtАй бұрын

    Maybe. I think Moers tends to be super detailed about filling his books with creatures and lore that doesn't push the story along, so it can get exhausting to read, wanting the story to proceed. It is also different reading it in English instead of German. Things may be lost in translation. Thanks for the comment!

    I remember picking up a classic book and in the blurb on the back it talked about the major event that happens towards the end of the book. Why?! The reviewer was a modern commentator and it felt like they were trying to claim credit for it. Was a big spoiler. Happy reading to you!

    A similar thing happens on the Twilight cover. It says something like "Edward is a vampire." Which yeah everyone really knows by now, but that "reveal" doesn't come until like page 150 in the book. Drove me crazy. Why try to keep his identity a mystery or secret if you reveal the secret on the back of the book!? And if you're going to reveal the secret on the back of the book, I think you can more speedily reveal it in the actual book. Like instead of the protagonist wondering for 150 pages what's up with Edward, just have the first sentence be like, "It took me three weeks to realize my classmate is a vampire. Maybe this is why my dad teases me about not being the brightest bulb in the shop." There. Saved readers from 150 needless pages. Now move on with the story.

I also added all the songs you recommended for the mixtape to a playlist in Spotify. I just couldn't find Blue by Ever Stays Red. My name is meant to be one but people usually pick one or the other so some people call me Maria and others call me Andrea. I respond to both. 🙂. Thanks again! 🫶🏽

    His childhood was rather dark. I read the book aloud to my 6 year old son, and I had to explain that things are a bit different now, in regard to medicine and child abuse in schools. But I adore Roald Dahl so much ❤ I grew up with his books and could really relate to his snarky, dark sense of humor. Thank you for this review ❤

    Yeah I definitely like Dahl's writing style, even reading it for myself now. He's not just an author for kids. And he clearly wanted to push how it was wrong how the kids were mistreating each other and getting mistreated by some adults, particularly teachers. I'm eager to read "Solo" and see what he says about his WW2 years.

    Another thing, in the video I say the 14th amendment essentially abolishes slavery, but that's what the 13th amendment does. My bad. I always kinda combine those two amendments in my head. The 13th amendment abolishes slavery. The 14th amendment grants citizenship and equal protection. I could make a whole 'nother video on the 14th amendment, but yeah. So! Apparently, the 13th amendment passed under Lincoln, and when he became president, Johnson DID require Southern states to ratify the 13th amendment abolishing slavery as part of readmission to the Union. He did not however support a civil rights bill or the 14th amendment, thinking they were state issues, but the slavery issue was essentially settled already via the 13th amendment, and Johnson supported enforcing the 13th amendment.

    I'm so happy for you - for getting tickets to spend time with your favorite band! 🤩. Are there any vegan festivals in your area? I love a good vegan fest 😋. Also, have you read Lincoln in the Bardo? Anyway, interesting conversation 😉.

  • @shaunholt
    @shaunholt2 ай бұрын

    I dunno about the vegan festival thing. I'm quite introverted so I don't get out much. What is it? Just like vegan food and stuff? It would be nice to meet people who have similar leanings, whether it's book lovers, fans of Disciple, vegans/vegetarians. It's like 1,000 potential friends. Should get all their phone numbers and see if any of us can become besties. Haven't read that book. Honestly I kinda avoid Lincoln because my great-grandma LOVED him because her great-great grandfather I think owned a store that employed Lincoln, and I always heard the story. It's actually kinda cool. He's in most all Lincoln biographies - James Gentry. He had a store, hired a young Lincoln, and one day Lincoln and James' son went sailing down the river for a delivery, where Lincoln I think witnessed his first slave auction. That's on my dad's side of the family from his mother's side. On my dad's father's side, we actually had ancestors who were in the South, and we have letters from them about Lincoln and the war. So they were on the Confederate side (oops). But I'm not really fond of Lincoln, because on my mother's side, my fourth great-grandpa was Little Crow (he's on Wikipedia). Little Crow was a Sioux chief who led a war against the United States, and as a result of the war, Lincoln ordered the largest single-day execution in U.S. history, hanging 38 American Indians. So to me, Lincoln is a little bit less the freer of the slaves, and more the one who ordered 38 Indians executed in one day, so I can't really feel any fondness for him. I can't really look past that. So I'm connected to Lincoln at least those three ways. James Gentry who hired Lincoln, Confederates who hated Lincoln, and American Indians who went to war vs the U.S. The Confederate ties is kinda amusing to me (woops; wrong side), but Little Crow means more to me. It doesn't sit well with me how he died and how the U.S. govt treated the Indians. So I'm kinda split. Some of my ancestors fought the U.S. for a very bad reason, slavery (woops), while the other side fought for a more justified reason (land, food, safety). So I feel much more strongly tied and sympathetic to them.

But at least this way you know if I DO like a book, I must really like it and it must indeed be really special. My Top 1,000 rankings are under a playlist on my channel called Lists. Here's the first one. It's more in the third video though where I talk more about each book. Glossaries certainly help! But for this book I'd need to consult the glossary every sentence or two. I'd rather just watch the movie first. And I would probably have more questions than the glossary would answer. Cuz if I come across a word, I want to know who/what it is, what the history/backstory is, etc., and I need to know it promptly because I will NOT remember that word 62 pages later.
