I was buying Heavy Metal magazine at the time. I saw this graphic novel advertised in it. I'd loved "Alien: The Illustrated Story" as much as the movie. So I bought "1941." I loved that, too! A surreal, zany escapade that escalated the madness until the last page. So, I couldn't wait to see the movie! I was going to love it!! Imagine my disappointment when the movie turned out not to have a shred of the sheer humour and creativity of the graphic novel and was, in fact, a completely boring, pointless pile of pooh!! I went home after and read the graphic novel again and wished that the movie had actually been like that! What the hell was Spielberg thinking???!!!

@@TaylorTalksComics In the UK we didn't have as much information about US movies as we do nowadays. I probably wouldn't have had any idea that "1941" was coming, but I loved the graphic novel and Spielberg had made a few movies I'd enjoyed tremendously. "1941" showed his Achilles heel- how they managed to come up with that brilliant graphic novel based on that crap movie is beyond me to this day! HM didn't only bring out a superb adaptation of "Alien." At the same time, they published "The Book of Alien" as a companion piece (same size as the graphic novel), a superb "making of" with amazing attention to all the details of the production, extensively illustrated with Giger art, set photos and stills. The two books together were the equivalent of today's special edition DVDs. Sheer quality.

@@TaylorTalksComics I have the "Alien Quadrilogy" DVD box set from back when there were only 4 movies, with each film in it's theatrical and special directors cut forms plus each has a bonus disc with phenomenally detailed archives of the conception and making of each, with the first being the most fascinating. Obviously, "The Book of Alien" couldn't go into as much detail, but, at that time, it was still able to reflect the care and attention to detail that went into making that original, classic movie.

Probably a hot take but I prefer collecting the Dark Horse trades to the Fantagraphics artist HCs, mainly from a cost perspective. I can live with the modern recoloring but I love being able to read everything sequentially and watch the artist's styles develop and (at least in the New Trend titles) watch the stories get progressively edgier. But aesthetically, sure, it does look better in B/W.

A couple of comics I'd like for you to check out are Optic Nerve (published by Drawn & Quarterly) by Adrian Tomine. He starts off writing a few short stories in each issue, then one story per issue, then multiple issues for one story. Mostly slice of life stuff. He's also done a bunch of covers for the New Yorker. Well as it goes I'm currently 'entertaining' the 2000ad forums with my top 100 Comics of all time (there's already 142 on that list! Don't ask) so I'm all prepared for this. In order (and editing the superhero stuff out - there are a few) we get: 1. Stray Bullets 2. Concrete 3. Nikolai Dante (from 2000ad) 4. Calvin and Hobbes 5. Grendel 6. Judge Dredd (by John Wagner) 7. Asterix (by Goscinny and Udzero) 8. Eightball 9. Bacchus 10. Lawless (from Judge Dredd Megazine) 11. Cerebus 12. Monica 13. Bone 14. Charley's War (from Battle / Battle Action) 15. Hate 16. Ducks 17. Corto Maltese 18. (I'm not counting Zot! so) Barefoot Gen 19. The Goon 20. Almost Silent (Jason) For context there are 4 superhero stories mixed in with those AND if any of those don't meet folks criteria then I'll add a few back ups, being, Flintstones (by Mark Russell), Cradlegrace (from 2000ad), The Spirit (by Will Eisner), Flaming Carrot.

Podcaster Matttt (unsure how many Ts) did a video on George Herriman I watched last week. It went into detail about his career and how he felt he had to hide his race and present himself as white in the early 20th century.

Big Lobo Fan and Big Fan of this Fraggin Compendium! But have been down this road with DC before so I am going to doubt we get a 2nd book in this set. DC just sucks at doing it with the non supes/bats tie in books.
