    This playlist is brilliant, and I've bought the Udemy version (bargain!). Your comment '... a folder called templates which actually has a lot of stuff inside it, and that's scaring me a little bit' is so damned relatable! So many Kubernetes courses barely touch on Helm, they devote maybe ten minutes and summarise as "Helm is cool and easy, good luck!" which is unhelpful and never true of anything in IT..!

    Hey it's great to hear this is useful - I hope the Udemy course proves useful too! I'd forgotten saying that "scary" bit - I'm discovering that more and more of IT is scaring me as I get older! Hope it goes well, best of luck!

  • @RichardChesterwood
    @RichardChesterwood23 күн бұрын

    More than 2 years I think (youtube dates are a bit misleading, looks like rounded down). All still valid though, the course this is part of is constantly updated and if I needed to update any of the Helm videos I'd certainly replace them here on youtube. As always versions tick up and slight variances in syntax might happen, but nothing major or structural.

  • @RichardChesterwood
    @RichardChesterwood3 ай бұрын

    Hi, there's no specific 2024 version of the courses, they just get updated as I go along - although the Helm section hasn't needed any attention for some time. Having said that, there's always something out of date - it's a bit like painting a big bridge. (exception - the plain Docker for Java course has stopped getting updates, although I'm going to try to remedy that).

  • @RichardChesterwood
    @RichardChesterwood4 ай бұрын

    Hi, I don't think there's a way to do this as the two files are representing separate things - metadata in chart.yaml and dynamic values in the other. What are you planning to do with this? Looking around it looks like the only way would be to somehow template the two files.

    Why did you used maven path in dockerfile for copying jar file? Does fabric8 docker maven plugin works in such way?

  • @RichardChesterwood
    @RichardChesterwood4 ай бұрын

    It was a weird quirk of the fabric8 plugin that insisted on having these paths. Alas the plugin is deprecated now, I'll be upgrading the course to reflect this but I guess it also means that this video is now totally out of date. Sorry about that, I hate the way these plugins and libraries get thrown up in a rush and then suddenly abandoned with no replacement.

  • @RichardChesterwood
    @RichardChesterwood9 ай бұрын

    Hi, yes I think this is due to a bit of weirdness in the way the nginx image behaves on Apple silicon. To fix this, try adding "-arm64" to the end of every image name. (eg: richardchesterwood/k8s-fleetman-webapp-angular:release1-arm64") Do this for all the images, not just the webapp. Reapply and I'm hoping all will be well, but report back. In theory all the images should run under emulation on apple silicon (arm64), but they will run too slowly and the above nginx bug kills things entirely. These alternative images were built natively on M2.

    Since I'm taking your Udemy course, I paused it to follow the instructions in this video. The GCP UI has changed a bit, but there was enough structural similarity that everything worked perfectly. I am blown away by the portability potential of Kubernetes. I've gotten the same app to work on minikube on Windows, on kops on AWS, on eksctl on AWS, and now on GCP, which I know was the whole point. Some tweaking required and issues to overcome, to be sure. But in the end, it works.

  • @RichardChesterwood

    Thanks for those kind words! Yes, sometimes a new API has broken the yaml supplied with the course, but that's becoming less common in recent times. With such a big course there's always something at least a bit broken, so there's a long TODO list of upgrades which I'm slowing plodding through. It's a bit like painting a bridge in that it's never finished, which is why I've not released any new courses for a while. Must admit I haven't used Helmfile yet, I think it would be a good addition.
