  I dont know if this is true.. but I have always broken the block between villagers (the one at head height)... when you trade enough with one guy to level him up, he will tell everyone else how great you are and you get a slight discount... not sure if this is true, but my i heard it once and have always done it just in case.

  You can plant seeds without water, they grow slower but it still works.
