Almost all PuertoRicans have some Taino ancestry, and 61% of PR can trace, by dna, their matrilineal ancestry to a Taino woman. That doesn't mean that the Taino, as a distinct and separate people, still exist. They don't. Taino decendents live on mixed with other peoples. It's not more complicated than that. Calling yourself Taino seems silly. It leads to the question of who is, or is not, allowed to call themselves that? Right now, there aren't any rules because it doesn't matter. So, any hippie that feels like it can claim to be Taino ( there are some charlatans). A person who annoints himself as Chief doesn't have any right to exclude those with Taino ancestors.

And this is why Puerto Rico is being sold off to private rich investors that come from all over the world and now taking over the water ways and making the public beaches private. Just like they've done in the US.

There's discrimination because they don't want us to claim our land back. Our ancestors bones and artifacts are all in private collections and private museums because they don't want us to declare our historical and indigenous claim to the land.

Re: @18:46 or there abouts (the erroneous claim starts a bit before this)... In error it's claimed here - in part clearly, & in part implied - that according to Christian Holy Scripture, the American Indians ought not to have been here in the Americas. 🙄 (Oy!) YHWH our God chose a small group of people to become a great people (He didn't choose all of the peoples of the "Old World," but rather only the Hebrews); &, because some of them rejected Him, others may now get in on this great opportunity for everlasting life with God Almighty; for, He spoke of having sheep not of the Hebrew fold in addition to the Hebrews (& He shall keep & protect all those who are His). These non-Hebrew "sheep" are from among all Gentiles (that is, all peoples apart from the Hebrews). Note: YHWH God the Father pre-knows all & has everything under control for a happy ending for those who trust the Christ Jesus (Iesous, Yeshua). YHWH our God created all that has been created; & folk from every nation, tribe, & tongue will be represented in His great congregation. ✝️😎👍

I've deleted my comment which previously occupied this space because I learned that I was wrong about the character & actions of Christopher Columbus - who I had previously been defending, but now realize that I was wrong to do so. I mistakenly thought that he hadn't returned after that 1st contact - but he returned multiple times. He was indeed brave & adventurous, but apparently he was also so cruel that even the Spanish gov't had him arrested.

How many critters have been declared to be extinct by modern scientists only to have one of such to be found alive - or just recently expired - many years later? 🤔 There's been a few so far in my lifetime. So, what are the chances that a Spanish governor on the Island of Puerto Rico wishing to please his king in Spain reported back that the native situation was already resolved - that the Taino were extinct (merely because he & his troops hadn't seen any for quite awhile)?* 🤔 Well, DNA extracted from the tooth of a Taino skeleton was analyzed & since there have been DNA matches made to living beings; so, the Taino aren't extinct afterall (apparently the Taino remnant has been saying this for many years since the immediate danger had passed, but academics have dismissed them in disbelief, chosing to believe that governor instead). * = Consider: U.S. troops in the Ardennes Forest on the lookout for the German army which they had been pushing back upon earlier didn't see such for quite awhile - & they continuously reported that there were no sightings of any large German force - until the day that the Germans decided to show themselves in force; &, U.S. troops also had trouble finding Seminole Indians in Florida back in the day while actively patrolling to find them; so, does anyone believe that the Taino remnant on the heavily vegetated island of Puerto Rico - upon seeing others of their tribe being enslaved, killed, or falling to various diseases brought to them via the Spaniards - would make themselves any less elusive towards their enemy at that time than say the Germans or the Seminoles did in their own respective times of stress? 🤔 Methinks that no reasonable individual would believe that.

Tainō = Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 Tainui = a group of people who traveled on boats from Hawaikii to Aotearoa (Antarctica)/New Zealand So I'm just gonna say it's kinda fascinating as in oral history, my own hapu came from the East [of New Zealand] from Hawaikiinui (big) Hawaikiiroa (huge) Hawaikiipamamao (legendary) there's only one Hawaikii/Hawaiian and we migrated some time before/ around 400ad or even earlier 1200bc on double haul canoes with triangle sails like Egyptian ships... sooooo Tai= (Sea) refers to tides nō= owned by Sea people who traveled and traded seems more plausible to me. So my question is "does anyone know what Taíno means in Arawak...?" Arawak=Arawaka > The ripples behind a boat or the wake. So I see this as a race of people who traded as seafarers across the vast oceans 🤔 Kia ora whanau 😊

I’m sorry but the “academic” they elicited to bring in his “scholarly” opinion is a textbook example of how sociologists are based in colonial structures who are part of the problem who are refusing to decolonize the field. If you notice he largely focuses on a largely westernized perspective and historical walk through, which again is written by colonial structures and historians. He also kept minimizing the issues that Tainos have and continue to face my taking a macro level focus and reducing them to statistics and numbers. Rather they should have elicited the scholarly insights of an anthropologist, who by training and education alone, would have taken a non-westernized historical perspective to begin with, emphasizing culture, and the social and physical characteristics (ie language, kinship, physical appearance, etc.), and focused on the human experience - rather than negate the experience and existence as did the sociologist, who only really acknowledged the contemporary Tainos as a watered down version of Taino culture that has been mixed in with other cultures as a survival mechanism… smh

Great documentary. I've been curious about my roots lately. Trying to find myself I guess. I've cut off communication with my mother, she's very toxic & we never had much in common. I am Puerto Rican on my father's side but I didn't grow up around that side of the family. I actually just ordered a DNA test, I'm really curious to see how much Taino show up. But I already know it's there I can feel it, like my blood wants me to learn more & embrace that part of my of my identity. I'm going to film doing the DNA test and then researching the results for my KZread channel. I think it's interesting, and there is very little representation in the Taino community. I didn't even know about them until I was in my 20's🤯

13:33 I get what that dude is saying, but I get the sense that the Neo-Taino movement is a counter to the capitalist movement. The History shows it: Columbus came and basically stole from the indigenous people. More European colonists came and did the same. In the modern age, it's the same monster in a suit and tie now. I just learned from my brother that the reason why The United States gave Puerto Ricans citizenship so that they could draft Puerto Rican men to help fight in WWI and WWII. So even though the movement might not be about being pureblooded Taino, it's about the message that the Taino people left behind: to help others even after they stab you in the back.
