The main character's flippant divorce was why I didn't end up picking up the bookstore book. It bothers me so much that in our culture, and apparently Korean culture to some extent, if someone wants to "find themselves" or "have a fresh start," it starts with them getting a divorce 😑 As if you can't be your true self if you're still tied to someone who knew you in your past or something. Although I've also noticed the people in those stories don't have kids, so we seem to recognize you can't just abandon your kids, but your spouse is fine? I started Banned Book Club a couple days ago, but I don't know if I'm going to finish it or not. It would jump scenes really quickly, and there were times when I wasn't sure what was happening because I didn't have enough context or I couldn't tell some of the characters apart.

I totally understand your reticence to pick it up. I didn't think it overwhelmed the book, but it was present. As the character grows and matures, both her and her husband realize that they didn't really try to talk things through and they regret that. I don't know if the divorce culture is as strong in South Korea as it is in America, but that's something that frustrates me too! It doesn't feel like it's much of a commitment when it's talked about so flippantly. Oh, that's a bummer about Banned Book Club! I won't be able to get my hands on it until Tuesday at the earliest, so I don't know how I'll feel about it. Maybe my prior experience with mangas will help me out, but who knows?
