    Okay, I know already my intervals ascending and descending but how I can apply this when I play by ear? Okay, I can tell the qualities of chords whether it is major. minor, diminished, or augmented. If I listen to a song, I can recognize the quality of the first chord played but what chord it is? It's not specific

    KZread channels are certainly useful (so long as you maintain a scepticism about all the info) but it's easy to spend a lot of time in KZread rather than actually composing!

    A few others that didn’t make the list: 1. Alan Belkin (previously mentioned by just want to emphasize his channel): short lecture-style videos on music theory topics and compositional techniques 2. Galen DeGraff: beautifully-produced videos on compositional techniques by a relatively-new creator 3. ClassicalNerd: Thoughtful and in-depth explorations of major composers, pieces, and movements in the history of Classical music

    Adam Neely spouts misinformation; he knows nothing about music theory, he only halfway knows broken jazz theory and invents new theory to make sense of what he does not understand. Nearly All of the music "theory" youtubers are infotainment not education. Beato is especially full of hot air and horrible; do any of his viewers actually learn anything from his videos after watching: No. And that is the proof. Those who want to learn theory and composition would be much much better off viewing and doing the composition exercises on the Music Matters channel which is actually correct root-based music theory, RCM-style. Truly the only youtube channel for authentic music education and music theory is Derek Remes. Who will never be "popular" because viewers at large do not want education, or valid theory; they want entertainment.

  • @jonathanwingmusic

    Adam & Rick have had the occasional interesting topics, but I mostly agree. Adam is very jazz-biased and a lot of what he says doesn't hold up with the orchestra and instruments that use variable intonation - lots of things he says I end up rolling my eyes. Rick is technically knowledgeable but often too cranky and rant-filled for real educational value. So many videos to hit the algorithm where he just rants about how bad he thinks modern music is... Totally agree about Music Matters - that channel is an absolute gem! Probably less popular because it's not flashy and not "entertaining," but the content is solid and presentation always very clear. I've learned a lot from him.

    I mean you also have to consider that Adam Neely uses jazz theory which stemmed from African American jazz musicians such as miles Davis, Coletraine, dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker etc. These musicians didn’t base their music off of the European centred 18th to 19th century (or even earlier) classical music theory so obviously the way Adam is analysing music isn’t gonna match up with the “RCM style” music theory. I’ll admit he does get things wrong especially when he does talk about classical stuff but I gotta say I can’t find much problems with his jazz analyses. There’s no one music theory, it differs based on time period and geographical differences. Also I’d say Beato is useful apart from the times he’s making ragebait and “old man yells at cloud” level content with his criticisms of modern popular music.

    @@user-yk1no4sn2z Many years ago, i.e. when Beato started, Beato was posting 'composition writing tutorials and composition reviews' on his channel. His 'lessons' and 'reviews' sucked and showed how little he knew of writing good music/compositions. He used all the typical cliche advice: "I want to hear more build here", "I want to hear more variation here", "make an arc, I want to hear an arc", is the max of what he ever recommended in his reviews, most of his comments were even more baseless. Also with a lot of "man shouting at cloud" attitude.

    Hey Carlos! I found your channel today, and it has been super helpful! In one video you mentioned that you usually publish through MyScore, the JWPepper self-publishing resource. I looked you up on JWPepper and saw that a couple of your pieces are linked to Carl Fischer. I was wondering if you could explain your thought process for sending some pieces to a publisher and not others. Did they approach you or did you submit it for consideration? Also, do you self-publish through multiple vendors (ArrangeMe seeming to be the other front runner), or just MyScore? Thank you for all your insights!

  • @CarlosLalonde
    @CarlosLalonde17 күн бұрын

    These are great questions! First, I was approached by the editors at Carl Fischer which is uncommon. So I tend to self-publish most of my music for the reasons I explain in my video. Second, I currently only publish through MyScore just for simplicity sake. I haven’t considered ArrangeMe, but I might take a look into it!
