Back in the day a good pal of mine had an R90S and I had a 750 Commando, I would say that my pal and myself were both highly skilled and competent riders and we would regularly ride out on the Eltham & District MCC road runs which always turned into an all out race between him and myself down long A roads like the A303 on the way West to the Sweedbashers Rally etc, well there was nothing in it between the bikes the relative performance between them was the same although I could keep going hard longer than my pal who used to become exhausted after about an hour of really hard racing. My Commando was essentially standard but extremely well sorted, I used to work on it all my spare time to hone the handling, brakes and engine into their best performance possible and the bike would easily hold 125 mph with a 19 tooth countershaft sprocket fitted and me grabbing a fork stanchion and crouching on the fuel tank with my feet on the rear footpads, happy days!

Ì bought one of these new in 1971. Mine was the same color. A dealer in Cambridge MN. Sold it to me off the show room floor. I lived on that bike for a couple of years until I got married. Then it had to go.

Had a 3CL in the 90's great bike, loved it but it vibrated a lot. Was my understanding the Jota had rubber engine mounting and the 3CL didn't, could have had bad info though.

@@LemonDrizzleGang Yup, had both in the day. But the RS to me was the first proper sports tourer as it had a full fairing with a low screen. Isn’t it a full fairing that makes it the touring part of Sports tourer ? The 900 to me was just a sports bike with a nose fairing similar to the one my mate had put on his Kwak 900. Being as I toured round northern France, Loire, two up with camping gear on an air cooled RD 250, anything can be a tourer I guess 😊

I bought a Mandello S when they where first launched, loved it, but a serious case of cellulitis has left me with some permanent damage in my left leg. I needed to stop every 40-50 miles to walk around and get the blood flowing again. So as soon as the Stelvio was announced my order was in. I've now done around 3500 miles on it, no problem with the leg and it's a fabulous bike. Sadly the suspension cannot be compared to the Mandello S. I'm hoping a Stelvio will be produced with the ohlins semi active. l'm looking forward to the gangs views on the Stelvio. Keep up the good work.

The "Iron Horse " was a name used for wak- behind Agricultural machines ( not rotovators) that would PULL a plough or set of harrows or rakes. Steered by handlebars and clutches on the drive wheels. Stop one and drive the other to go left or right. Still in use here in Thailand, where I live, using a SINGLE CYLINDER 5 LITRE DIESEL ENGINE.

The comparison i was looking for. Fancied the Caballero for its light weight and light off road bias but somehow got cold feet. Now this looks like a strong contender for a urban comuter especially with the low seat option, that wouldn't be too intimidating on occasional easy trail riding. Test ride requested! One thing of note for the Caballero is that there is hardly ever one on sale. I know it's not a great seller but it's been out 5 years. People seem to hold on to them 👍

The BMW had a cult following in Australia that has never really faded. These bikes were ridden on some truely horrific outback goat tracks and most always got their pilots to their destination. They are very capable in good hands of going anywhere. I’ve owned my boxer for 40 years, it still dose what I ask of it and it’s my one and only. I’ve ridden others and enjoyed them as well, but for a do anything bike, the BMW is in a league of its own, it deserves its place as an icon. The Norton dose look very lovely though.

What a wonderful display of superb motorbikes. The Laverda that Dave rode reminded me of the nicest Laverda that I've ever seen. It was at the Stafford show probably 20 years ago. The International Laverda Owners Club had a stand there and one of their members was displaying an early drum braked triple. It was in the same colour as the one that Dave rode and it was just perfect. The huge drum brake gave it so much more Italian 'elegance' than the later disc brake. Great stuff lads, I really enjoyed that. 👍

Many years ago, as in, 1976, a mate of mine and myself rode 120 miles each way from Invercargill to Dunedin, me on an AG175, and mate on Honda MT125 with an expansion-chamber exhaust. The MT sounded great doing full revs through the streets of downtown Dunedin at 1 am, but on the long ride back to Invercargill, the noise got so bad, we had to swap bikes on and off. Took some time after the trip for ears to work properly again. Rick from New Zealand.
