I did this hike about 20 years ago. I was invited by a member of the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club. While riding up in the car they told me that a group that they brought up a couple of weeks before freaked out and had to be brought back down. I am afraid of heights, so that was a bit unnerving. When we got to that big rocky area - for some reason I thought it was called "the fan", but I could be wrong - I kept looking up thinking "crap, how am I going to do this." I went ahead one handhold at a time, but at one point I made the mistake of turning around to see the view below, and the entire bowl below started moving all around. I quickly turned back around and kept my head down the rest of the way. I'm glad I did this trail, and would do it again, but if you are nervous about heights or get dizzy, when you get to that steep rocky outcrop, do not turn around and look down.

New Hampshire is one of my favorite states to hike in and it happens to be the same state I was born in. I have done the Appalachian trail 3.5 times and New Hampshire is always one of my favorite sections. Have fun out there. It's about the smiles not the miles. Happy trails

Kudos to you! I've hiked all of these trails many times over, including in winter. They're certainly not for beginners, but with some patience and a little willpower they're all very doable (T25). The Colden trap dyke in the Daks would be a fun one for you, if you are into challenging yourself. Maybe I'll see you out there on the trail someday. I pretty much live on the trail...lol Happy hiking!

Ehhh… It was supposed to be about 13.5 but I actually calculated with the FarOut app afterward and what I ended up doing was over 16 miles and 5,500 ft of gain. Now. If you don’t go trotting off down the Great Gulf Trail for over a mile when you’re supposed to cross the suspension bridge and get back onto the Madison gulf, it will be closer to the 13. 😅☺️💗

Good hike and good effort. Huntington's is only dangerous to rookie hikers carrying a heavy pack. A heavy pack can make you off balance in some tight spots. Not really that bad. The weather is key no matter which trail you hit. I hiked Mt Wash 5 times in one year including June, Sept, Nov, Feb, and finished in May. Definitely prep for it and don't take that mountain for granted. Plenty of water, a nylon tarp, and a light 25 degree bag in case someone gets hurt and needs to wait for help. Stay away from Huntinton's in winter. The Havard cabin has been destroyed by ice and snow avalanches as well as the surrounding trees. Sept weather seems safest. And Tuck's is simply a staircase to the top. But fun none the less.

Glad you enjoyed it! beautiful even in an off foliage year! Last year's foliage in Maine was damaged due to near record rainfall all summer long here. Many trees got fungus problems and the leaves browned and fell off in August on some species. Two large maples near my house were almost bare in october when over the last twenty years put on a spectacular show usually. This year, not much rain so things should be the best!

Bushwacking is fine but I think I enjoy the open country better. I understand your reasoning for bushwacking because it challenges your mental capacity and to stay focused and to keep that fear factor under control, that you can eventually work through it if you stay calm and keep your head clear. You're doing a awesome job and it's obvious you're a professional in your field.

You are fit Amanda to travel as quickly as you do. Do bears live in that location? If so, do you carry spray ? ( may be a silly question, but I live in the UK ). Stay safe eh ? Your grading system doesn't compare to ours in the UK. A class two scramble here would require ropes because of exposure.

  • @AmandaDouin

Thank you.. 😅 Black bears are all through these woods but I’ve only seen them driving and they are almost always scared and running away. I don’t carry any bear spray for them. Super interesting about the grading system! Class 4, ropes would be optional. Class 5 required for safety. I’d like to read about the British version of the system, really neat topic! Thanks for watching!!

Awesome vlog Amanda! You manage to capture the Hike really well, with the reverse POV view. It shows the viewer, just what to expect. For instance, if I was to hike that route, I can now see that the bouldering is not too bad, but I may wear a Helmet because of the wet mossy conditions ( having gone arse over breakfast on a moss covered rock before ) and it’s good to see such a clear representation of the up hike through your Lens. I think the way you bring this across works. Great format and so awesome to see this beautiful area highlighted like this. Happy Trails!

@@AmandaDouin Exactly. Watching your hand and foot placement helps a novice Hiker distinguish the easy bits from the hard, or, where extra care is needed etc. Too many forward facing POV shots, show where the person is going and gives the viewer an idea of where to go, but nothing beats watching someone ducking, squeezing, clambering and grabbing at Branches to get up. Kudos.
